  • The Purpose of this study is to explore if people with intellectual disabilities can play a role as 'meaningful informants' in research process in Korea, by challenging the existing paradigm which consists of suspicion on the communication ability of people with intellectual disabilities and truthlessness of their statements, which results in ignorance on the covered life of people with intellectual disabilities. In this research, lessons which could learn through reinterpretation of my research experience are as follows. Firstly, the deficits of communication ability can be supplemented with restructuring interview instruments such as research questions, visual aids etc and adopting conversation analysis methods. Secondly, Suspicion on the truthlessness of their statements can be restructured by epistemological and methodological reinterpretation on the representation of social reality. Thirdly, the mechanism of exclusion and oppression according to the ignorance can be substituted by 'uncovering the life of people with intellectual disabilities', which can be basis of reconstructing the contents of programmes in the disability service centers and disability policies in the government. With these research results it could be argued that there needs to include people with intellectual disabilities as meaningful informants in the research projects funded by the government and also to provide people with intellectual disabilities with diverse roles in the research process by virtue of the development of qualitative research methods in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of sensory and visual perception of children with intellectual disabilities by conducting psychomotorik (psychomotor activity) in the forest and indoor treatment rooms. Accordingly, this study divided 18 children with intellectual disabilities living in the facility for persons with disabilities located in Seoul into three groups: the experimental group participating in psychomotorik in the forest, the comparative group participating in psychomotorik in the treatment room, and the control group without any treatment at all. The program was conducted for 32 weeks, 4 hours a month. The results showed that psychomotorik promoted the sensory and visual development of children with disabilities. Psychomotorik in the forest showed significant effects on touch and activity level, form constancy and eye-hand coordination. Psychomotorik in the treatment room showed significant improvement in figure-ground with reduced motion. This suggests that psychomotorik in the forest as well as indoors is a positive factor for sensory adaptation reaction and visual development of children with intellectual disabilities.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the gait patterns of adults with intellectual disability and healthy adults based on collected kinematic data on the lower extremities and to investigate the gait patterns of intellectually disabled people by comparing the differences between the two groups. Methods: The participants were divided into in one group of healthy adults (n = 9) and one group with mild intellectual disabilities (n = 9). 3D motion analysis (Myomotion) was used to collect kinematic data from each group while the participants walked 3 times over 10 m. As a statistical method, each group's kinematic data during walking was analyzed and compared using an independent sample t-test. Results: Comparing the kinematic data of the lower extremities during walking between the group with mild intellectual disability and the healthy group, there were significant differences between the two groups in the hip and ankle joints in the stance and swing phases. Conclusion: The analysis suggests that people with intellectual disabilities have kinematic differences compared with healthy people. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to conduct further research on rehabilitation programs for joint stabilization, exercise for increasing joint range of motion, muscle strengthening exercise, and proprioception training for people with intellectual disabilities with insufficient physical function.

A representative residential facility practicing a human rights perspective was selected by recommendation of professional groups. Using a qualitative case study method, data was collected and analysed. In detail, it explores the experiences of rights-based social work practice at both organizational and individual levels respectively, and then discusses ethical dilemmas that arise from workers in the process of rights-based social work practice. According to results at the organizational level, rights-based social work practice of the residential facility began from workers' interests in needs of users with intellectual disabilities. Some trials to apply human rights in social work practice resulted in regulations for people with intellectual disabilities and stepped up organizational culture on human rights perspectives. And, at the individual level, self determination and choice of users with intellectual disabilities were stressed among various forms of human rights. As the results of rights-based social work practice, it appeared to be improved for the participation of the users, workers' human rights sensitivity, and qualities of rights-based activities. However, ethical dilemmas still existed. Hence, rights-based social work practice should understand a process of dynamic interaction between users and workers, which require workers to endeavor continuously. This study is significant in that it explored rights-based social work practice, focusing on field experiences for the first time in Korea, and suggested practical tasks to settle it down in the future.

  • In order to actively apply horticultural therapy to vocational education base schools, this study applied the learning theories based on behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism to improve the vocational skills of high school students with intellectual disabilities. The horticultural therapy program was carried out in total 12 sessions with three groups composed of 20 students each: 20 in the control group, 20 in the experimental group with a normal horticultural program, and 20 in the experimental group with a horticultural therapy program which applied the learning theories based on behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. The results were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 using the Interpersonal Negotiation Strategies evaluation tool. The study found that in terms of interpersonal relationship, there was no significant difference between the pre and post tests within each group. However, in the post tests among the three groups, there was no significant difference between control group and experimental group with normal horticultural program (p=.82), but there was a significant difference between the control group and experimental group with the horticultural therapy program applying the learning theories based on behaviorism, cognitivism (p=.03). This proved that the horticultural therapy program applying the learning theories based on behaviorism, cognitivism is effective for improving interpersonal relationship. Ultimately the program is expected to be continuously, and systematically improved and applied as a learning method contributing to developing the basic vocational skills of persons with intellectual disabilities.
