A full-scale synchronized data acquisition system was set up on the roof of the experimental building at the Texas Tech University Wind Engineering Research Field Laboratory to simultaneously collect approaching wind data, conical vortex images, and roof corner suction pressure data. One-second conditional sampling technique has been applied in the data analysis, which makes it possible to separately evaluate the influencing effects of the horizontal wind angle of attack, ${\theta}$, and the vertical wind angle of attack, ${\varphi}$. Results show a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the incident wind, conical vortices, and the induced roof-corner high-suction pressures. The horizontal wind angle of attack, ${\theta}$, is shown to be the most significant factor in influencing the overall vortex structure and the suction pressures beneath. It is further revealed that the vertical wind angle of attack, ${\varphi}$, plays a critical role in generating the instantaneous peak suction pressures near the roof corner.

In this study, a set of artificial earthquake time histories, which can be used for the earthquake-resistant design of seismically isolated highway bridges, was presented. In addition, adequateness of the generated ground accelerations was investigated. These were performed based on the seismic design standard for seismically isolated bridges. Total of 22 acceleration time histories were generated for each soil condition by the spectral method. The time histories were verified to meet the code provisions including (1) mean response spectrum at control frequencies, (2) EPGA (effective peak ground acceleration), and (3) correlation coefficient. Finally, the maximum response corresponding to four time histories and the mean response associated with seven time histories were computed using the generated acceleration time histories, which shows validity of the proposed artificial earthquake time histories.

This paper describes the measurement result of leakage current flowing arresters connected in feeder lines to propose an optimal management method. Twenty seven arresters set in seven areas were analyzed on a regular basis for 4 months. The results showed that the RMS and the peak value of the total leakage currents for soundness arresters were a range of $200uA{\sim}00uA$. respectively. During the period of measurement, the magnitude of the leakage current didn't show conspicious changes and there were impossible places to analyze arrester's status due to including high THD rate in a feeder line, From the study, leakage current measurement has to be performed at a condition without running an electric train in the line, and the allowable RMS value of soundness arrester is bellow 600uA.

Number of highway lanes and level of service are based on the 30th, 60th or 100th highest hour volume of the target year. On the other hand, railroad design volume is generally expressed in average annual daily traffic (AADT). This procedure ignores attributes of railroad demand's concentration on peak days and hours. Actual data analysis represents railroad's peaking characteristics very similar to those of highways. Therefore it is necessary to set a procedure in selecting design volume for railroad planning. This study presents a concept and the calculating procedure for railroad design hourly volume to analyze effect of railroad investment.
The misalignment errors and fluctuations in irradiance due to atmospheric turbulence can severely degrade the performance of free-space optical (FSO) systems. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic bit error rate (BER) performance and diversity orders of FSO links using parallel transmit-diversity schemes. The BER expressions of FSO links with the switch-and-examine transmit (SET), switch-and-examine transmit with post-selection (SETps), dual-branch transmit laser selection (Dual-TLS), and group transmit laser selection (Group-TLS) schemes are derived, based on an approximate channel model. Then numerical simulations for these four schemes in the region of high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are presented under different channel conditions. The results show that the four transmit-diversity schemes can reduce system complexity and overcome the limitation of peak power, without much BER deterioration.
This paper addresses issues of perceptual constancy in speech perception through the use of a spatial metaphor for speech sound identity as opposed to a more conventional characterisation with multiple interacting acoustic cues. This spatial representation leads to a correlation between phonetic, acoustic and auditory analyses of speech sounds which can serve as the basis for a model of speech perception based on the general auditory characteristics of sounds. The correlations between the phonetic, perceptual and auditory spaces of the set of English voiceless fricatives /f $\theta$ s $\int$ h / are investigated. The results show that the perception of fricative segments may be explained in terms of 2-dimensional auditory space in which each segment occupies a region. The dimensions of the space were found to be the frequency of the main spectral peak and the 'peakiness' of spectra. These results support the view that perception of a segment is based on its occupancy of a multi-dimensional parameter space. In this way, final perceptual decisions on segments can be postponed until higher level constraints can also be met.
The noise suppression of time domain NMR data by discrete wavelet transform with high order Daubechies wavelet coefficients exhibits severe peak distortion and incomplete noise suppression near real signal. However, the fact that even a shift averaged Harr wavelet transform with a set of Daubechies wavelet coefficients (1/2, -l/2) can be used as a new and excellent tool to distinguish real peaks from the noise contaminated NMR signal is introduced. New algorithms of shift averaged Harr wavelet were developed and quantitatively evaluated in terms of threshold and signal to noise ratio (SNR).

In this paper, a best-basis selection algorithm that improves the performance of the coding gains and the computational complexity is proposed. The proposed algorithm limits the computational complexity according to the resolved threshold value and decomposes the parent subbands by using the top-down tree search and the relative energy between the parent subbands and the child subbands. For the experiments of the proposed algorithm, the bit-rates, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and the reconstructed images are presented by using the Quad-tree coder. The result of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of DWT algorithm using the Quad-tree coder for a set of standard test images. In addition, the result of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of JPEG-2000 algorithm and that of S+P algorithm.

In this paper, we dealt with a partial discharge(PD) measurement system that has been accepted as an effective and non-destructive technique for estimating reliabilities of low-voltage electrical and electronic components. Calibration tests on laboratory set-up have shown that the PD measurement system has a stable sensitivity of 37.6 mv/pC. In an application test on photo coupler, we could detect 0.1 pC level of partial discharge at the applied voltage of AC 520 $V_{peak}$.
Purpose: The importance of core exercise on muscle activation of the lower extremity has been studied. This study investigated the effects of core exercise using pressure biofeedback unit on muscle strength of lower extremity. Method: Fourteen healthy young adults (7 males and 7 females) were recruited. They were randomly separated two groups and performed core exercise using pressure biofeedback unit of one set for three minutes, 10sets per day for three weeks. Result: The mean of muscle strength of lower extremity, maximum power of muscle and peak TQ/BW in core exercise group significantly increased after core exercise using bio feedback unit (p<.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that core exercise using pressure biofeed-back unit may help improving of muscle strength of lower extremity in young adults.
