PURPOSES : This study is to compare load transfer efficiency of key joint and dowel joint for airport concrete pavement. METHODS : As AC150/5320-6D of FAA's [Advisory Circular] was changed into AC150/5320-6E, Key joint type of rigid pavement were excluded from Construction Joints. LTE(Load Transfer Efficiency) of dowel joint and key joint were compared by times and seasons through pavement temperature measurement, ocular investigation and HWD measurement. RESULTS : For the joint performance grade of No. 2(The second) runway of airport, 12% of poor rate was observed in key joint and 2% of poor rate in dowel joint. Poor rate of key joint was increased to 17%, if only No. 3~No. 6 slabs, which are mostly loaded from the airplanes, were applied for the study. In apron area, LTE poor rate of key joint was high in winter, and LTE poor rate of dowel joint was at least above 'Fair' grade. In summer, 'Fair' for key joint, 'Acceptable' for dowel joint appeared. CONCLUSIONS : As results, dowel joint was superior than key joint for LTE. Deviations of seasons and times were smaller in dowel joint's result. And LTE in winter was lower than LTE in summer.

PURPOSES : A composite pavement utilizes both an asphalt surface and a concrete base. Typically, a concrete base layer provides structural capacity, while an asphalt surface layer provides smoothness and riding quality. This pavement type can be used in conjunction with rollercompacted concrete (RCC) pavement as a base layer due to its fast construction, economic efficiency, and structural performance. However, the service life and functionality of composite pavement may be reduced due to interfacial bond failure. Therefore, adequate interfacial bonding between the asphalt surface and the concrete base is essential to achieving monolithic behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bond characteristics at the interface between asphalt (HMA; hot-mixed asphalt) and the RCC base. METHODS : This study was performed to determine the optimal type and application rate of tack coat material for RCC-base composite pavement. In addition, the core size effect, temperature condition, and bonding failure shape were analyzed to investigate the bonding characteristics at the interface between the RCC base and HMA surface. To evaluate the bond strength, a pull-off test was performed using different diameters of specimens such as 50 mm and 100 mm. Tack coat materials such as RSC-4 and BD-Coat were applied in amounts of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and $1.1l/m^2$ to determine the optimal application rate. In order to evaluate the bond strength characteristics with temperature changes, a pull-off test was carried out at -15, 0, 20, and $40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the bond failure shapes were analyzed using an image analysis program after the pull-off tests were completed. RESULTS : The test results indicated that the optimal application rate of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were $0.8l/m^2$, $0.9l/m^2$, respectively. The core size effect was determined to be negligible because the bond strengths were similar in specimens with diameters of 50 mm and 100 mm. The bond strengths of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were found to decrease significantly when the temperature increased. As a result of the bonding failure shape in low-temperature conditions such as -15, 0, and $20^{\circ}C$, it was found that most of the debonding occurred at the interface between the tack coat and RCC surface. On the other hand, the interface between the HMA and tack coat was weaker than that between the tack coat and RCC at a high temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : This study suggested an optimal application rate of tack coat materials to apply to RCC-base composite pavement. The bond strengths at high temperatures were significantly lower than the required bond (tensile) strength of 0.4 MPa. It was known that the temperature was a critical factor affecting the bond strength at the interface of the RCC-base composite pavement.
OBJECTIVES : This study develops an evaluation method, which is useful to inspect pavement condition of specific boroughs. This is because pavement condition is broadly divided into five grades via visual inspection, which does not consider the types of deteriorations, and is decided by an investigator having a subjective viewpoint. This visual inspection method is not a satisfactory method for accurate maintenance when various deteriorations occur. METHODS : The performance model considers several factors such as crack, rutting, and IRI. This method is also modified from borough SPI based on SPI (Seoul Pavement Index). Considering limited budget of borough, PI (prediction index) is suggested, which is related to the grade of pavement condition evaluation and type of materials. Practical correlation review is also conducted with statistical verification by using the Monte Carlo simulation. RESULTS : The results of the study show that modified criteria are reasonable. First, the comparison between the visual inspection result and the SPI result indicates that the R-square value is sufficiently high. Second, through the common section, each evaluation method could be compared, and the result shows considerable similarity, which increases when the range is modified. Finally, PI for predicting remaining life and the random number SPI have common parts, which means that each indicator would be adequate to be used as an evaluation method. CONCLUSIONS : Comparison and analysis results show that the developed evaluation method is reasonable for specific boroughs where financial support is inadequate for the evaluation process by using the newer equipment. Moreover, for more accurate evaluation method, previous visual inspection data should be utilized, and the database of inspection equipment have to be collected.
Recently, usage bicycle is encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution. For this purpose, bike road constructions are actively performed. However, types of pavement used in bike roads have high construction cost and performance comparing the required capacity of bike roads. Thus, an economical pavement type for construction is necessary for the effective development. Roller compacted concrete pavement have good requirements, such as easy construction and low costs, high structural performance of hydration and internal communication aggregation on compaction for bicycle roads. However, the pool landscape surface and resistance to deicer damage cannot be applied to the construction of bicycle roads. Thus, for solving this problem used coating which may have effect of improving the landscape and environmental resistance. To examine this effect were evaluated performance of roller compacted concrete pavement on the coating.
A large amount of fine dust is generated during the process of pavement cutting. Consequently, reducing the amount of fine dust generated during pavement cutting is crucial for the overall management of fine dust. Based on this premise, in this study, a conceptual model is proposed for a device that can be employed for recovering scattered dust generated at the site of pavement cutting. The economic feasibility associated with the incorporation of the proposed model was analyzed. Results obtained from the economic feasibility analysis of the proposed conceptual model indicate that the benefit ratio is 2.96, which is significantly higher than 1. The rate of return is found to be 62.78%, which significantly exceeds the minimum expected rate of return (i.e., 10%), as established on the basis of interviews conducted with companies that implement pavement cutting. Furthermore, the break-even point is found to be at approximately 21.6 months. Hence, the proposed pavement cutter, which features dust suction and a low noise level, is economically feasible.
PURPOSES : This study presents the noise level and frequency characteristics investigated in the national highways with the consideration of various measuring conditions and/or methods. METHODS : The noise levels on the asphalt concrete pavement(ACP) and the jointed plain concrete pavement(JPCP) of the national highway were measured and analysed with respect to three variables, i.e., pavement type, surface condition, and measurement distance. The PASS-By method is utilized for the noise measurement and then using CPB spectrum analysis method with 1/3 octave bandwidth, the noise levels and frequency characteristics were calculated for two-second periods before and after the peak noise. RESULTS : Depending on the pavement type, the noise level was changed as the average noise levels are 73.3dB(A) and 78.3dB(A) for ACP and JPCP, respectively. With respect to the effect of surface condition, the average noise levels for crack H(high), M(medium), and L (low) sections are 77.4dB(A), 77.4dB(A), and 78.1dB(A), respectively. Regarding the measurement distance, 1.2meter difference in measuring location reduces 1.6dB(A) of noise level; the average noise levels at 5.3m and 7.5m from the centerline of outer lane are 72.8dB(A) and 71.2dB(A), respectively. It should be noted that the noise levels are slightly different as a function of vehicle speed and type. However, the overall trends for each case was similar. It was found that the domain frequency bands for ACP and JPCP were 400Hz~2000Hz and 500Hz~2000Hz, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the analysis with the measured noise date from national highway, it was concluded that the noise level and frequency band vary depending on the various conditions. It was also found that some variables significantly affect the noise level while others do not. With further systematic investigation, the comprehensive noise characteristics on the national highway can be achieved. Using such database, it is possible to develop the fundamental noise reduction technology.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix design of the content of 100 % reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for spray injection application with different binder types. METHODS : Literature review revealed that spray injection method is the one of the efficient and economical methods for repairing a small defective area on an asphalt pavement. The Rapid-Setting Polymer modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid setting polymers-asphalt emulsion and a quick setting polymer asphalt emulsion-were subjected to the following tests to determine optimum mix designs and for performance comparison: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) Retained stability test, 3) Wet track abrasion test, and 4) Dynamic stability test. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Type A, B, and C emulsions were tested with different mix designs using RAP aggregates, to compare the performances and determine the optimum mix design. Performance of mixtures with Type A emulsion exceeded that of mixtures with Type B and C emulsion in all aspects. In particular, Type A binder demonstrated the highest performance for WTAT at low temperature. It demonstrated the practicality of using Type A mixture during the cold season. Furthers studies are to be performed to verify the optimum mix design for machine application. Differences in optimum mix designs for machine application and lab application will be corrected through field tests.

Due to the character of the climate of Korea, the pavement of a road is Influenced by freezing in winter season and thawing in thawing season. In the last few years, several articles have been devoted to the study to minimize the damage of freezing and thawing action. The purpose of this paper is to identify appropriacy of factors that influence road pavement thickness. We conduct the decision tree analysis on the field data of road pavement. The target variable is 'Frost penetration'. This value was calculated from the temperature data. The input variables are 'Region', 'Type of road pavement', 'Anti-frost layer', 'Month' and 'Air temperature'. The region was divided into 9 regions by freezing index $350{\sim}450^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$, $450{\sim}550^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$, $550{\sim}650^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$. The type of road pavement has three-section such as area of cutting, boundary area of cutting and bankin, lower area of banking. As the result, the variables that influence 'Frost penetration' are Month, followed by anti-frost layer, air temperature and region.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to verify the effect of fiber grid reinforcement on the long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on old concrete pavement by performing field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis. METHODS : The reflection cracking, roughness, and rutting of fiber grid reinforced overlay sections and ordinary overlay sections were compared. Cores were obtained from both the fiber grid reinforced and ordinary sections to measure bonding shear strength between the asphalt intermediate and asphalt overlay layers. Fracture energy, displacement after yield, shear stiffnesses of the cores were also obtained by analyzing the test results. Finite element analysis was performed using the test results to validate the effect of the fiber grid reinforcement on long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on the old concrete pavement. The fatigue cracking and reflection-cracking were predicted for three cases: 1) fiber grid was not used; 2) glass fiber grid was used; 3) carbon fiber grid was used. RESULTS : The reflection-cracking ratio of fiber grid reinforced sections was much smaller than that of ordinary sections. The fiber grid reinforcement also showed reduction effect on rutting while that on roughness was not clear. The reflection-cracking was not affected by traffic volume but by slab deformation and joint movement caused by temperature variation. The bonding shear strength of the fiber grid reinforced sections was larger than that of the ordinary sections. The fracture energy, displacement after yield, and shear stiffnesses of the cores of the fiber grid reinforced sections were also larger than those of the ordinary sections. Finite element analysis results showed that fatigue cracking of glass or carbon fiber grid reinforced pavement was much smaller than that of ordinary pavement. Carbon fiber grid reinforcement showed larger effect in elongating the fatigue life of the ordinary overlay pavement compared to glass fiber grid reinforcement. The binder type of the overlay layer also affected the fatigue life. The fiber grid reinforcement resisted reflection-cracking and the carbon fiber grid showed the greater effect. CONCLUSIONS :The results of field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis showed that the fiber grid reinforcement had a better effect on improving long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on the old concrete pavement.
Safety, resilience and comfort of pedestrian were assessed by the British Pendulum Test and SB/GB factor test at 8 kinds of sidewalk pavement. Sidewalk paving materials were normal concrete, porous concrete, concrete block, soil concrete, asphalt, rubber chip/resin mixture, wood chip/resin mixture and floor tile. In addition, a survey was conducted to investigate the perception of pedestrians on the sidewalk paving material. As a result, while the skid resistance value was measured in the most 60BPN above, the floor tile showed a low value of about 30BPN. The ratios of SB factor to GB factor of the elastic pavements(rubber/resin mixture and wood chip/resin mixture) appeared to be relatively large when compared with those of the conventional sidewalks. The survey showed that respondents perceived as more safe and comfortable elastic pavements compared to conventional pavements. Approximately 50% of respondents answered that hardened soil pavement was the most environmentally friendly.
