This study presents the test results on the performance and the moisture retaining ability of semi rigid pavement using the moisture retaining grouting. The two kinds of the grouting materials were used for the Laboratory tests. The method of the tests includes the compression(3 hours and 7 days) and flexural strength(7 days) varying the P lot flow values. The test results show that the variation of the P lot value has no great effects on the strength, however, the different strength was found as the different grouting materials were used. The performance of the semi rigid pavement was evaluated varying the air void ration of the base asphalt pavement. The test results show that the flexural strength of the semi rigid pavement increases with increasing the air void of the base asphalt pavement so that the flexural strength of the semi rigid asphalt pavement can be effected by the air void of the base asphalt pavement. The moisture retaining tests were conducted and compared in the field the comparisons were made with the dense grade asphalt pavement and the semi rigid asphalt pavement with and without spraying the water. The difference of the temperature of the semi rigid pavement with the spraying water has recorded $11^{\circ}C$ when it compared with the dense grade asphalt pavement and $4^{\circ}C$, when it compared with the semi rigid pavement without the spraying the water. It can be seen that decrease the temperature of the pavement by the moisture retaining ability from the semi rigid pavement.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the performance and work productivity of wet type pavement cutters and sludge suction type pavement cutters (hereinafter referred to as automatic pavement cutters) developed to reduce scattering dust. We first investigated the development status of wet type manual pavement cutters that are mainly used in Korea and automatic pavement cutters, and analyzed the pavement cutting work in detail. And the standard cutting performance was derived by measuring the cutting time by depth by applying the two equipment to the test bed under the same conditions. However, there is a limitation that the data measured in the test bed does not reflect the various variables of the actual pavement cutting site. Therefore, in this study, data was collected through field surveys, and the correlation between cutting distance and time was analyzed, and then a model for calculating the productivity of pavement cutters was presented through simple regression analysis. As a result of comparative analysis of the values derived from the regression equation with the standard cutting performance derived from the test bed, the cutting performance derived through the regression equation showed a similar trend to the standard cutting performance. Finally, we verified the usability of the automated pavement cutter developed by qualitatively analyzing three tasks that are difficult to measure quantitatively but affect productivity.
Currently existing Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) systems developed in several countries have been employed mainly to test the performance of asphalt pavement. Meanwhile, the length of concrete pavement is similar to that of asphalt pavement in expressways of Korea. and is expected to increase due to its durability and compatibility to our weather condition. To meet the society's demand of having our own APT system which can examine the long-term performance of concrete pavement, a contract study to develop Korea Accelerated Loading and Environment Simulator (KALES) for concrete pavement has been performed for 3 years from 1997 through 1999. Through the project, a detailed design was Peformed for the KALES system in which the entire structure of KALES, loading mechanism, wandering mechanism, suspension system, driving system were proposed. Also in advance to design a full-scale KALES system, a sample scale model was manufactured and tested for operating motion and force distribution. It is evident that the proposed prototype KALES system will provide higher degree of traffic simulation and durable operation, based on the satisfactory fatigue analysis.

The government is encouraging the notice of obligatory reclaimed asphalt as a result of the economic and social positioning of green growth to reduce the amount of waste resources and to solve natural resource problems by recycling continuously generated waste resources. However, it is necessary to develop application guideline for each application to apply reclaimed asphalt to the site because quality control of the reclaimed asphalt is difficult and the specifications are ambiguous as well. Therefore, in this study, the mix design, quality test, performance test, and finite element analysis about reclaimed Asphalt Pavement were conducted to develop application guideline for reclaimed hot asphalt. The mix design was carried out for the comparative general hot mix asphalt mixture, the reclaimed hot mix asphalt mixture using the additive, and the reclaimed hot mix asphalt mixture without the additive. Indirect tensile strength and tensile strength ratio tests were used to characterize the reclaimed hot mix asphalt mixture. Using the results of dynamic modulus test and FWD test for KPRP analysis and finite element analysis, the performance life was evaluated for general pavement and pavement using recycled aggregate. Finally, the life cycle cost analysis was used to compare and analyze the economics of reclaimed asphalt concrete pavement.
PURPOSES : Surface treatment material for pavement preventive maintenance should be inspected field applicability. This study(Part II) aimed to checkup coating characteristics and performance analysis using lab and field tests. The hydrophobic - low viscosity filling material for pavement preventive maintenance is presented in Part I, which is a series of companion study. METHODS : Relative comparison between general asphalt mixtures and surface treatment asphalt mixtures are analyzed and measured for the field application such as indirect tensile strength ratio(TSR), abrasion resistance, crack propagation resistance, temperature resistance, coating thickness, permeability resistance and skid resistance in terms of british pendulum number(BPN). RESULTS : It is found that TSR, crack propagation resistance and permeability resistance is increased as against uncoated asphalt specimen. Abrasion resistance and temperature resistance is secured from the initial coating thickness point of view, which is about 0.2~0.3mm. Skid resistance on the surface treatment pavement is satisfied with the BPN criteria of national highway because of exposed aggregate and crack sill induced pavement deterioration and damage cracks. CONCLUSIONS : The hydrophobic - low viscosity surface treatment material for pavement preventive maintenance is validated on field applicability evaluation based on quantitative analysis of coating thickness and performance analysis using lab and field tests.
PURPOSES : In this study, field performance evaluation of crack treatment of pavement and the feasibility of surface treatment of pavement are presented. The performance and cost of preventive maintenance methods have been previously verified, and the methods are being used in many developed countries and cities. However, the performance and cost of the system have not been verified in domestic, field applications. Therefore, in order to improve performance, the field performance is evaluated, and a reasonable cost is proposed. METHODS : Visual Inspection was conducted to evaluate the field application and performance of the preventive maintenance method. In addition, the PCI index was calculated from the results of visual inspection of the application area of the surface treatment method, and the performance life of each method was predicted. For the economic evaluation, life cycle cost analysis was performed using the life cycle cost analysis program. RESULTS :In order to evaluate and quantify the field performance of crack repair material, the residue condition of the pavement surface after crack treatment, rather than the performance of the material, is evaluated. In addition, the crack resistance and performance life of surface treatment methods are evaluated. The cost of currently available treatment methods are compared to the common pavement cut and overlay method, and it is determined that the preventive method is not economical based on life cycle cost analysis. CONCLUSIONS :Because of the characteristics of cracking, it is necessary to conduct the evaluation of currently applied methods and the analysis of the cause of damage, by visual inspection. Moreover, in order to evaluate the performance and economic suitability of the currently applied surface treatment methods, it is necessary to acquire information on application sections by monitoring their long-term conditions and performance.

PURPOSES : Performance evaluation of four types of asphalt concrete overlays for deteriorated national highways. METHODS : Pavement distress surveys for crack rate and rut depth have been conducted annually using an automated pavement survey vehicle since 2007. Linear and non-linear performance prediction models of the asphalt concrete overlays were developed for 43 sections. The service life of the asphalt overlays was defined as the number of years after which a crack rate of 30% or rut depth of 15mm is observed. RESULTS : The service life of the asphalt overlays was estimated as 17.4 years on an average. In 90.7% of the sections, the service life of the overlays was 15 years or more which is 1.5 times the life of conventional asphalt concrete overlays used in national highways. The performance of the overlays was dependent on the type of asphalt mixture, traffic volume levels, and environmental conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The usage of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) for the overlays provided good resistance to cracking and rutting development. It is recommended that appropriate asphalt concrete overlays must be applied depending on the type of existing pavement distress.

PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate physical properties, durability, fatigue resistance, and long-term performance of poly-urethane concrete (PU) which can be possible application of thin layer on long-span orthotropic steel bridge and to check structural stability of bridge structure. METHODS : Various tests of physical properties, such as flexural strength, tensile strength, bond strength and coefficient of thermal expansion tests were conducted for physical property evaluation using two types of poly urethane concrete which have different curing time. Freezing and thawing test, accelerated weathering test and chloride ion penetration test were performed to evaluate the effect of exposed to marine environment. Beam fatigue test and small scale accelerated pavement test were performed to assess the resistance of PU against fatigue damage and long-term performance. Structural analysis were conducted to figure out structural stability of bridge structure and thin bridge deck pavement system. RESULTS: The property tests results showed that similar results were observed overall however the flexural strength of PUa was higher than those of PUb. It was also found that PU materials showed durability at marine environment. Beam fatigue test results showed that the resistances of the PUa against fatigue damage were two times higher than those of the PUb. It was found form small scale accelerated pavement test to evaluate long-term performance that there is no distress observed after 800,000 load applications. Structural analysis to figure out structural stability of bridge structure and thin bridge deck pavement system indicated that bridge structures were needed to increase thickness of steel deck plate or to improve longitudinal rib shape. CONCLUSIONS: It has been known that the use of PU can be positively considered to thin layer on long-span orthotropic steel bridge in terms of properties considered marine environment, resistance of fatigue damage and long-term performance.
PURPOSES : The permeable pavement type has been rapidly developed for solving problems regarding traffic noise in the area of housing complex and heavy rainwater drainage in order to account for the climate change. In this regards, the objective of this study is to figure out the characteristics of pavement types. METHODS : The laboratory test for deriving optimum asphalt content (OAC) was conducted using the mixtures of the permeable asphalt surface for the pavement surface from Marshall compaction method. Based on its results, the pavement construction at the test field was conducted. After that, the site performance tests for measuring the traffic noise, strength and permeability were carried out for the relative evaluation in 2 months after the traffic opening. The specific site tests are noble close proximity method (NCPX), Light falling deflectometer test (LFWD) and the compact permeability test. RESULTS : The ordered highest values of the traffic noise level can be found such as normal dense graded asphalt, drainage and porous structure types. In the results from LFWD, the strength values of the porous and drainage asphalt types had been lower, but the strength of normal asphalt structure had relatively stayed high. CONCLUSIONS :The porous structure has been shown to perform significantly better in permeability and noise reduction than others. In addition to this study, the evaluation of the properties and the determination of the optimum thickness for the subgrade course under the porous pavement will be conducted using ground investigation technique in the further research.

PURPOSES : This research was a fundamental study on the application of an integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt concrete pavement. The integral $TiO_2$ solution was produced in pilot production equipment; application of the integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt pavement was conducted to examine the pollution-reducing capability of photocatalytic compounds such as $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic $TiO_2$ reacted with air pollutants, converting them into small amounts of relatively benign molecules. METHODS : In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using five various testing methods. Tensile strength ratio (TSR) and British pendulum test (BPT) were conducted in order to evaluate the properties of asphalt pavement subsequent to the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In addition, methylene blue testing, a measurement of nitrate on the coated pavement, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction testing were conducted in order to evaluate photocatalytic reaction. Lastly, a UV-A lamp was used as a light source for photocatalytic reactions. RESULTS : Test results indicated no change in the properties of asphalt pavement following the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In order to evaluate the performance of asphalt pavement as a function of $TiO_2$, the moisture susceptibility and skid resistance were investigated. The moisture susceptibility and skid resistance satisfied there quirements related to pavement quality and safety specification. Furthermore, the effects of reduction of air pollution were significantly improved as determined via the methylene blue test and NOx reduction test. The $TiO_2$-paved asphalt specimen exhibited approximately 43% reduction of NOx. CONCLUSIONS : This study has suggested that applying $TiO_2$ rarely impacts asphalt pavement performance measures such as moisture susceptibility and skid resistance, and that its application may be a better means of reducing air pollution. Further studies, such as proper $TiO_2$ dosage rates and compatibility with various pavement types, are required to broaden and generalize its application.
