  • In a rapidly changing technology environment, managing and rearranging the patent portfolios is one of the main sources of competitive advantage for firms. This study analyzes the effects of patent portfolio composition on new product introduction related to resource allocation. This study also looks at the moderating role of rearranging the patent portfolios on new product introduction. Our empirical analysis of the global pharmaceutical industry shows that firms with high-value patent portfolios exhibit a tendency to launch new products, and patent portfolio diversity shows a U-shaped relationship with new product introduction. In addition, the patent portfolio rearrangement positively moderates the relationship between patent portfolio diversity and new product introduction. The results are expected to provide implications for firms' patent portfolio composition and patent portfolio rearrangement related to innovation performance such as new product introduction.

  • The competition environment among companies is rapidly expanding into the world market. Therefore, this study intended to suggest an analysis method of patent portfolio that can compare an international technological capacity through empirical analysis on the global automobile companies. This study measured international patent activity using triadic patent data of 20 years from 1991 to 2010, and measured patent quality from legal, technological and economic aspects. As a result, Ford and GM, automobile companies of America, are analyzed to be the potential leaders with greatly increased patent quality. The significance of this study is in measuring international patent activities between global companies from different countries based on the triadic patent. And, this study suggested methods of analyzing patent quality consistently from legal, technological and economic aspects based on the triadic patent.

  • This research aims to propose a systematic approach to identify emerging technology-product portfolio for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Firstly, operational definition of emerging technology for SMEs is presented. Secondly, research framework is suggested and case study to show usefulness of the newly proposed framwork is analyzed. In detail, reference patent set which represent company's capabilities and business area are constructed. The research constructs patent data set for bibliometric analysis using reference patent set and citing patents to 2nd level. Clustering (expert judgement) and keyword based bibliometric approach are used. Then, cluster activity index (AI) and relevance index (RI) comparing with reference patent set are estimated. With emerging technology-product portfolio using AI and RI, a firm can identify emerging technology-product area and monitoring area.

  • This paper proposes an approach to analyzing the relationship between technology and services, and to identifying promising service areas for technology-based firms with the analysis of business model (BM) patents. First, BM patents and technology patents are collected and classified into their relevant categories, respectively. Second, patent citation analysis is conducted to analyze the linkage and impacts between each technology and service field at macro level. Third, as a micro level analysis, patent co-classification analysis is employed to identify the interrelationships among specific technology and service areas. Finally, the promising service areas for technology-based firms seeking service areas for diversification is investigated with portfolio analysis. The working of the proposed approach is provided with the help of a case study of IT and mobile services. The proposed approach could guide and help managers of technology-based firms to discover the opportunity of the diversification to new areas in emerging service fields.

  • This study proposes a technology portfolio analysis method for technology outsourcing of pharmaceutical cooperations by applying the concepts of 'Pipeline Soundness' and 'Patent Validity'. This study also applied the developed portfolio analysis method to a 'real world case' of Amgen's acquisition of Onyx Pharmaceuticals to prove the applicability of the method to the real world cases and investigated the validity of the acquisition affair between the two companies. The results of portfolio analysis showed that Amgen's technology portfolio will be improved by acquiring Onyx Pharmaceuticals especially in cancer field which is their main field. So we concluded that Amgen's choice of Onyx pharmaceuticals as a source of technology outsourcing was reasonable. We think that the technology portfolio analysis method developed by this study will be a valuable tool for pharmaceutical cooperations for investigating their current technology status and selecting target companies for technology outsourcing.

  • In fostering dynamic, innovative SMEs, hidden champion companies can be an appropriate model for SMEs to learn the success factors. On the other hand, the need for intellectual property management is becoming important as the value of a company is changing from a financial asset to an intellectual property. Therefore, in this study, the patent portfolio analysis of the hidden champion companies mentioned in Herman Simmon's book "Hidden Champion" was performed. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that patents are not possessed or patent activities are actively carried out and a differentiated intellectual property management strategy is implemented to improve patent quality depending on the characteristics of the technology possessed. The results of these studies can be used as basic data to prepare an intellectual property management strategy for companies that want to create opportunities to acquire monopoly rights and reduce patent maintenance and management costs. In addition, in this study, the patent IPC analysis verified that Herman Simmon's claim that "Hidden champions have the ability to focus on core competencies and focus on one technology" is valid.

  • This study aims to contribute to the improvement of the patent activity of small and medium-sized enterprises in the future by proposing five strategies for enhancing customized patent activity for small and medium-sized enterprises under the assumption that patent application affects firm performance. The subjects of this study were 25 years of active patent activity, using patent activity statistics for 5 years from 2010 and statistical data of business performance based on 2014. The research procedure was conducted in the order of DEA-BCC efficiency analysis, patent activity analysis, and patent portfolio analysis, and then propose a strategy to improve patent activity. As a result of the research, it was confirmed that 5 industries with high patent activity and IRS type have a substantial effect on improving corporate performance as an industry with high patent efficiency. On the other hand, there are 12 industries in the form of IRS/DRS, and 8 industries with low patent activity, DRS, CRS/IRS mixed type and IRS, and that the efficiency of the patent may vary depending on the characteristics of each industry.

  • Offshore wind power has been extremely popular in recent years, and in the energy technology field, relevant research has been increasingly conducted. However, research regarding patent portfolios is still insufficient. The purpose of this research is to study the status of mainstream offshore wind power technology and patent portfolios and to investigate major assignees and countries to obtain a thorough understanding of the developmental trends of offshore wind power technology. The findings may be used by the government and industry for designing additional strategic development proposals. Data mining methods, such as multiple correspondence analyses and k-means clustering, were implemented to explore the competing technological and strategic-group relationships within the offshore wind power industry. The results indicate that the technological positions and patent portfolios of the countries and manufacturers are different. Additional technological development strategy recommendations were proposed for the offshore wind power industry.
