  • This study was performed to evaluate the performance of three passive samplers made in U.S.A. Three passive samplers selected for this study included products made by 3M, Gilian, and SKC in U.S.A. Three organic solvents, such as toluene, trichloroethylene, and n-hexane which are used frequently in Korean industry were selected for the study. Conclusions obtained from this study are summarized as follows. 1. For toluene and trichloroethylene, the overall accuracy of the results from all of three products was within 25 %, which is the criteria recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). For n-hexane, the overall accuracy of the results from two products except 3M was exceeding 25 %. Thus 3M product showed the best accuracy among three products. 2. When passive samplers collected organic vapors were exposed to clean air for two hours, there were 12 - 16 % loss of organic vapors due to reverse diffusion in Gilian products. There was no significant loss in results from other two products. 3. Air velocity affected greatly on the performance of passive samplers which did not have permeation membrane. At high velocity, 100 cm/sec, accuracies of results from Gilian and SKC were 57 - 108 and 128 - 164 %, respectively. However, the results from 3M samplers, which contain permeation membrane, indicated accuracy below 25 %. 4. When passive samplers collected organic vapors for eight hours, the accuracy was reduced. Thus, it is recommended that passive samplers be used for less than four hours.

  • Objectives This study was conducted to determine the depositional characteristics of several tree barks, including Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), Pine (Pinus densiflora), Platanus (Platanus), and Metasequoia (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). These were used as passive air sampler (PAS) of atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Methods Tree barks were sampled from the same site. PBDEs were analyzed by high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometer, and the lipid content was measured using the gravimetric method by n-hexane extraction. Results Gingko contained the highest lipid content (7.82 mg/g dry), whereas pine (4.85 mg/g dry), Platanus (3.61 mg/g dry), and Metasequoia (0.97 mg/g dry) had relatively lower content. The highest total PBDEs concentration was observed in Metasequoia (83,159.0 pg/g dry), followed by Ginkgo (53,538.4 pg/g dry), Pine (20,266.4 pg/g dry), and Platanus (12,572.0 pg/g dry). There were poor correlations between lipid content and total PBDE concentrations in tree barks ($R^2$=0.1011, p =0.682). Among the PBDE congeners, BDE 206, 207 and 209 were highly brominated PBDEs that are sorbed to particulates in ambient air, which accounted for 90.5% (84.3-95.6%) of the concentration and were therefore identified as the main PBDE congener. The concentrations of particulate PBDEs deposited on tree barks were dependent on morphological characteristics such as surface area or roughness of barks. Conclusions Therefore, when using the tree barks as the PAS of the atmospheric PBDEs, samples belonging to same tree species should be collected to reduce errors and to obtain reliable data.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important public health issue in Korea and many important questions remain to be addressed with respect to assessing exposure to these compounds. Because they are ubiquitous and highly volatile, special techniques must be applied in their analytic determination Valid Personal exposure assessment methods are needed to evaluate exposure frequency, duration and intensity, as well as their relationship to personal exposure characteristics. Biological monitoring is also important since it may contribute significantly in risk assessment by allowing the estimation of effective absorbed doses. This study was on ducted to establish the environmental measurement, personal dosimetry and biological monitoring methods for VOCs. These methods are needed to compare blood, urinary and exhalation breath VOC levels and to provide tools for risk assessment of VOC exposure. Passive monitors (badge type) and a active samplers (trap) for the VOCs collection were used for air sampling. Methods development included determining the minimum detectable amounts of VOCs in each media, as well as evaluating collection methods and developing analytical procedures. Method reliability was assessed by determining breakthrough volumes and comparing results between laboratories and with other methods. A total capacity of trap used in this study was 60ι. Although variable by compound, the average breakthrough was 20%. Also, there was no loss of compounds in trap even if keep for 45 day in -7$0^{\circ}C$. The recovery of active and passive methods was 69% ~ 126% and method detection limit was 0.24 $\mu\textrm{g}$/trap and 0.07 $\mu\textrm{g}$/badge. There was no statistical difference (P > 0.05) between active and passive methods.

  • Objectives: Exposure to hazardous chemicals during pregnancy may result incritical reproductive health outcomes. Indoor residential levels are significant component of personal exposure. The collection of residential exposure data has been hampered by the cost and participant burden of health studies of indoor air pollution. This study utilized a participant-based approach to collect volatile organic compounds concentration from homes. Methods: Four hundred thirteen women were recruited from three major hospitals in Seoul and Gyeongi Provence and 411 agreed to participate. A passive sampler (OVM 3500, 3M, USA) with instructions were given to the participants, as well as a questionnaire. They were asked to deploy the sampler in their homes for three to five days and return them viapre-stamped envelope. Results: Three hundred forty six participants returned the sampler. Among the returned samplers, three hundred samplers satisfied our monitoring quality criteria. The success rate of the monitoring method was 73%. The geometric mean of TVOC level was 429(2) ${\mu}g/m^3$. The TVOC guideline of 500 ${\mu}g/m^3$ was exceeded in 38% of the houses. The residential VOC levels were significantly associated with remodeling of the house. Conclusions: The results suggested that a participant-based sampling approach may be a feasible and costeffective alternative to exposure assessment involving home visits by a field technician.

  • Recently a passive $NO_2$ samplers have been frequently used for the measurement of $NO_2$ concentration in the atmosphere because of its simplicity and high accuracy. But these samplers have a defect that the amount of $NO_2$ adsorbed is increased by wind. In this study, the inlet of sampler was covered with a draft shield made by 325 mesh stainless sieve to eliminate the effect. But it was expected that $NO_2$ diffusion was interrupted by the draft shield. In order to conform this phenomenon, samplers with and without draft shield were exposed to a box filled with 1-1.1ppm $NO_2$. The result indicated that draft shield nearly did not disturb $NO_2$ diffusion. To protect samplers from dust, sunshine, precipitation and vertical wind effects, these samplers were placed into a shelter during the field test. The data obtained in this study was compared with the data from the ambient air monitoring network. The coefficient of correlation(r) between the two data was 0.9995 for the test period of up to 35days. The results of this study indicate that the type of $NO_2$ samplers with draft shield in shelter used in this study can be used for measuring $NO_2$ concentrations in the ambient air relatively for a long period over 30 days.

  • The number of motor vehicles in Korea has increased to about 4 million, and the exhaust gases of these vehicles have become a more threatening factor to public health. Traffic policemen are one of the highest health risk groups since they work on roadsides where they are exposed to high levels of air pollutants. The health effects on them due to air pollution were determined by measuring personal carbon monoxide(CO) exposure and carboxyhemoglobin(COHb) level in blood. Thirty-one traffic policemen in Seoul volunteered to be subjects of the study. In October 1992, personal CO exposure was measured by a CO passive sampler. The subjects wore the CO passive sampler for 8 hours while on duty. The exposed samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. Blood samples from each subject were collected just after the exposure sampling, and were analyzed within 3 hours of blood collection by a CO-oximeter. The activities of the subjects were recorded by the subject in 30 minute intervals using an activity log sheet containing location and time spent. Personal CO exposure were ranged between 0.1 and 14.5ppm, eith an average of 5.9ppm. Carboxyhemoglobin levels ranged from 1.1% to 6.9%, with an average of 3.6%. policemen on duty outdoors had significantly higher CO exposures and COHb levels than policemen on duty indoors(p<0.01). Personal CO exposure and COHb were positively correlated, although the coefficient was not significant. The relationship between CO level and COHb level was confounded by smoking status. Among smokers, COHb level was significantly higher as CO exposure and hours worked outdoors increased.

  • This study investigates the variation and spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$) concentrations measured with passive diffusive samplers at 40 curbside points in Daejeon. Average $NO_2$ concentration was $39.8{\pm}18.0\;ppb$ (n=1,127) and the significant difference in concentrations by regional groups (Dong-gu, Jung-gu, Seo-gu, Daedeok-gu, Yuseong-gu) was not observed. The frequency distribution of $NO_2$ concentration was found to be a normal distribution with the high frequency in the concentration range of 30 to 40 ppb (20 to 25%). Average $NO_2$ concentration measured during the rainy periods was lower than that measured during the non-rainy periods and the decrease of concentration by rainfall was about 16% (7 ppb). The variation of $NO_2$ concentrations measured by passive diffusive samplers during the sampling period was similar to that continuously measured at the air quality monitoring station.

  • Atmospheric levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at the King Sejong station were monitored for one year using passive air samplers. Low-chlorinated PCB homologues were predominant in all samples. PCB levels were observed to decrease with distance from the station, which may indicate that a significant part of PCBs could be of local origin. Although the level of PCBs at the King Sejong station is very low (${\Sigma}_9PCB$ (18, 52, 101, 118, 128, 138, 153, 180, 187): $2.3\;pg\;m^{-3}$) probably due to decrease in the global PCB emissions, it is one order of magnitude higher than a background level in the Antarctic. Based on this preliminary study, more interpretation on PCB data and meteorological conditions is required.
