The Finite Element Method has been employed to calculate the effect of particle size, matrix, and volume fractions on the stress-strain relations of .alpha.-.betha. titanium alloys. It was found that for a given volume fraction, the calculated stress-strain curve was higher for a finer particle size than for a coarse particle size within the range of the strains considered, and this behavior was seen for all the different volume fraction alloys considered. The calculated stress-strain curves for three vol. pct .alpha. alloys were compared with their corresponding experimental curve, and in general, good agreement was found.

In the present study, a laminar natural convection flow of $H_2O$-Cu nanofluid in a two dimensional enclosure has been investigated using a thermal lattice Boltzmann approach with the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model. The effect of suspended nanoparticles on the fluid flow and heat transfer process have been studied for different controlling parameters such as particle volume fraction ($\Phi$), Rayleigh number (Ra). For this investigation the Rayleigh number changes from 104 to 106 and volume fraction varied from 0 to 10% with three different particle diameters (dp), say 10 nm, 20 nm and 40 nm. It is shown that increasing the Rayleigh number (Ra) and the volume fraction of nanofluid causes an increase of the effective heat transfer rate in terms of average Nusselt number (Nu) as well as the thermal conductivity of nanofluid. On the other hand, increasing the particle diameter causes the decrease of the heat transfer rate and thermal conductivity. The result of the analysis are compared with experimental and numerical data both for pure and nanofluids and it is seen a relatively good agreement.
The effects of additional Mg content, the size and volume fraction of reinforcement phase on the mechanical properties of ceramic particle reinforced aluminium matrix composites fabricated by pressureless metal infiltration process were investigated. The hardness of $SiC_p/AC8A$ composites increased gradually with an increase in the additive Mg content, while the bending strength of $SiC_p/AC8A$ composites increased with an increase in additive Mg content up to 5%. However, this decreased when the level of additive Mg content was greater than 5% due to the formation of coarse precipitates by excessive Mg reaction and an increase in the porosity level. The hardness and strength of the composites increased with decreasing the size of SiC particle. It was found that the composites with smaller particles enhanced the interfacial bonding than those with bigger particles from fractography of the composites. The hardness of $Al_2O_{3p}/AC8A$ composites increased gradually with an increase in the volume fraction, however, the bending strength of $Al_2O_{3p}/AC8A$ composites decreased when the volume fraction of alumina particle was greater than 40% owing to the high porosity level.

This paper presents results for dispensing and measuring micro-particles using a pneumatic dispensing system. Particle-suspended liquid droplets were dispensed and analyzed quantitatively at various particle concentrations and applied pressures. By using a developed experimental setup, the number of particles and the particle volume ratio in sequentially dispensed droplets were measured. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were tested to find a suitable surface for counting the number of particle. It was confirmed that the dispensed particles concentrated into the center of the droplet on the smooth CD surface after evaporation of liquid. As the applied positive pressure increased, the number of particles per droplet increased consistently and the volume fraction of particles remained constant.

In this study, we theoretically investigate the thermal performances of heat pipes that have different nano-fluid properties. Two different types of nano-particles have been used: $Al_2O_3$ and CuO. The thermal performances of the heat pipes are observed for varying nano-particle aggregations and volume fractions. Both the viscosity and the conductivity increase as the volume fraction and the aggregation increase, respectively. Increasing the volume fraction helps increase the capillary limit in the well-dispersed condition. Whereas, the capillary limit is decreased under the aggregate condition, when the volume fraction increases. The dependence of the heat pipe thermal resistance on the volume fraction, aggregation, and conductivity of the nano-particles is analyzed. The maximum thermal transfer of the heat pipe is highly dependent on the volume fraction because of the high permeability of the heat pipe. For the proposed heat pipe, the optimum volume fraction of the nano-particle can be seen through 3D graphics.

Particle deposition in human lungs was investigated theoretically by using asymmetric five-lobe lung model. The volumes of each of the five lobes were different, thereby forming an asymmetric lung structure. The tidal volume and flow rate of each lobe were scaled according to lobar volume. The total and regional deposition with various breathing patterns were calculated by means of tracking volume segments and accounting for particle loss during inhalation and exhalation. The deposition fractions were obtained for each airway generation and lung lobe, and dominant deposition mechanisms were investigated for different size particles. Results show that the tidal volume and flow rate have a characteristic influence on particle deposition. The total deposition fraction increases with an increase in tidal volume for all particle sizes. However, flow rate has dichotomous effects: a higher flow rate results in a sharp increase in deposition for large size particles, but decreases deposition for small size particles. Deposition distribution within the lung shifts proximally with higher flow rate whereas deposition peak shifts to the deeper lung region with larger tidal volume. Deposition fraction in each lobe was proportional to its volume. Among the three main deposition mechanisms, diffusion was dominant for particles < 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ whereas sedimentation and impaction were most influential for larger size particles. Impaction was particularly dominant for particles> 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The results may prove to be useful for estimating deposition dose of inhaled pollutant particles at various breathing conditions.
We determine the effective viscosity of suspensions with bidisperse particle size distribution by modifying an effective-medium theory that was proposed by Acrivos and Chang (1987) for monodisperse suspensions. The modified theory uses a simple model that captures some important effects of multi-particle hydrodynamic interactions. The modifications are described in detail in the present study. Estimations of effective viscosity by the modified theory are compared with the results of prior work for monodisperse and bidisperse suspensions. It is shown that the estimations agree very well with experimental or other calculated results up to approximately 0.45 of normalized particle volume fraction which is the ratio of volume faction to the maximum volume fraction of particles for bidisperse suspensions.
The fabrication process and mechanical properties of SiC particle prefrrms with high volume fraction ranged 50∼71% were investigated to make metal matrix composites for possible applications as heat sinks in electronic packares. The SiC particle preforms with 50∼71vol% of reinforcement were fabricated by a new modified process named ball milling and pressing method. The SiC particle performs were fabricated by ball milling of SiC particles with single sized of 48${\mu}$m in diameter or two different size of 8${\mu}$m and 48${\mu}$min diameter, with collodal SiO2 as inorgnic binder in distilled water, and the mixed slurries were cold pressed for consolidation into final prefom. The compressive strengths og calcined SiC particle prefoms increased from 20MPa to 155MPa with increasing the content of inorganis binder, temperature and time for calcination. The increase of compressive strength of SiC particle bridge the interfaces of two neighboring SiC particles.

Characteristics of carbon soot particles generated in diffusion flames were studied. Non-sooting and sooting normal diffusion flames using propane or ethylene as fuel were selected. In the flames, soot volume fraction was measured by a thermocouple, and primary particle diameter and cluster size were analyzed by TEM photographs. The characteristics of soot particles depended on flame(non-sooting or sooting) and fuel(propane or ethylene) type. Unlike the sooting diffusion flames, particle growth and oxidation processes were clearly observed in the non-sooting diffusion flames. In the sooting diffusion flames, soot particle size was slightly changed at the flame tip.

When an alloy such as Ni-W is liquid phase sintered, heavy solid W particles sedimentate to the bottom of the container, provided that their volume fraction is less than a critical value. The sintering process evolves typically in two stages, diffusiondriven macrosegregation sedimentation followed by true sedimentation. During macrosegregation sedimentation, the overall solid volume fraction decreases concurrently with elimination of liquid concentration gradient. However, in the second stage of true sedimentation, the average solid volume fraction in the mushy zone increases with time. It is proposed that the true sedimentation results from particle rearrangement for higher packing efficiency.
