Automobile shredder residue (ASR) is the final waste produced when end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are shredded. ASR can be separated using mineral-processing operations such as comminution, air classification, magnetic separation, and/or electrostatic separation. In this work, trajectory analyses of conductors (copper) and non-conductors (glass) in the ASR have been carried out using induction electrostatic separator for predicting or improving the ASR-separation efficiency. From results of trajectory analysis for conductors, the trajectories of copper wire by observation versus simulation for coarse particles of 0.5 and 0.25 mm showed consistent congruity. The observed 0.06 mm fine-particles trajectory was deflected toward the (-) attractive electrode owing to the charge-density effects due to the particle characteristics and relative humidity. In the case of non-conductors, the actual trajectory of dielectric glass deflected toward the (-) electrode, showing characteristics similar to those of conductive particles. The analyses of stereoscopic microscope and SEM & EDS found heterologous materials (fine ferrous particles and conductive organics) on the glass surface. This demonstrates the glass decreasing separation efficiency for non-ferrous metals during electrostatic separation for the recycling of ASR. Future work will require a pretreatment process for eliminating impurities from the glass and advanced trajectory-simulation processes.
Using particle-in-cell(PIC) and Monte Carlo collision(MCC), we investigate the trajectory of electrons and the characteristics of D.C. discharge In Wire Ion Plasma Source(WIPS).
The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.

The movements of small particles distributed uniformly in a steady flow in rectangular chambers having inlets and outlets were simulated numerically. Low Reynolds number turbulent model with a two-equation ($k-{\varepsilon}$) which describes the turbulent characteristics was applied to predict the air flow pattern and particles movements under the condition of the various locations and size of ducts. The calculation results show that the prediction of recirculation zone and stagnation point of flow is important to determine the particles behavior according to the design change. These results will be useful in designing the rectangular chambers for collective protection.
The kinetics of flocculation of heterodisperse suspension like those in water treatment plants and natural water system are usually described by the Smoluchowski equation, which incorporates collision frequency functions for particle collisions by Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation. These collisionfrequeney functions have been based on a rectilinear view of collisions, i.e., one that ignores short-range forces and changes in fluid motion as particles approach one another. In this research, a curvilinear approach, i.e., one that accounts for hydrodynamic forces and particle interaction in the collision of two different size particles is developed. Collision efficiency factors of each mechanism can be calculated by trajectory analysis (fluid shear and differential sedimentation) or the solution of diffusion equation (Brownian motion). The results are presented as a set of corrections to the rectilinear collision frequency functions for each mechanism.

This paper addresses a formation navigation issue for a group of mobile robots passing through an environment with either static or moving obstacles meanwhile keeping a fixed formation shape. Based on Lyapunov function and graph theory, a NN formation control is proposed, which guarantees to maintain a formation if the formation pattern is $C^k,\;k\geq1$. In the process of navigation, the leader can generate a proper trajectory to lead formation and avoid moving obstacles according to the obtained information. An evolutionary computational technique using particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed for motion planning so that the formation is kept as $C^1$ function. The simulation results demonstrate that this algorithm is effective and the experimental studies validate the formation ability of the multiple mobile robots system.
A numerical analysis is conducted on heat transfer and fluid flow of a plasma spraying process under the DC-RE hybrid electromagnetic field. Plasma flow is analyzed by using Eulerian approach and the equation of particle motion is simultaneously solved using a trajectory analysis with a lumped-heat-capacity model. Axisymmetric two dimensional electromagnetic fields governed by Maxwell's equations are solved based on a vector potential concept. The effects of the RF electromagnetic field on the temperature and velocity fields of the turbulent plasma flow are clarified. Control characteristics of phase changes and dispersed features of particles by applying the RF electromagnetic field are also clarified in an attempt to improve the plasma spraying process

The wind-flow characteristics over a two-dimensional triangular prism with a porous windbreak are numerically investigated. The geometry is a simplified model of large outdoor stack with a frontal wall-type windbreak which is used to prevent particle dispersion by reducing wind speed over stak surface. In the present numerical model, the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model, the orthogonal grid system and the QUICK scheme are employed for the successful simulation of separated flow. The predicted results are compared and validated with the associated wind-tunnel experiments. In addition, the trajectories of dispersed particles and their sedimentation characteristics are quantitatively investingated using a Lagrangian turbulent-dispersion model.

To investigate the characteristics of fine particles and the relationships between pollutant concentrations and long-range transport patterns in Asia area, continuous every 6-day sampling (case 1) and an intensive field sampling (case 2) had been carried out between March 1998 and July 1999 at Taean, Korea. Anionic ($Cl^{-}$, ${NO_{3}}^{-}$, ${SO_{4}}^{2-}$) and Cationic ($Na^+$, ${NH_{4}}^{ +}, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ particle were analyzed. The major objective of this study is to investigate the relationships between the chemical compounds of $PM_{2.5}$ and the long-range transport patterns during intensive sampling period.

A fine carbon fibers dispersion model is implemented to calculate the scattering range and ground level concentration of carbon fibers emitted at certain altitudes of atmospheric boundary layer. This carbon fibers dispersion model was composed by coupling a commonly used atmospheric dispersion model and an atmospheric boundary layer model. The atmospheric boundary layer model, applying the Monin-Obukov Similarity Rule obtained from measurement input data at ground level, was used to create the atmospheric boundary layer structure. In the atmospheric dispersion model, the Lagrangian Particle Model and the Markov Process were applied to calculate the trajectory of scattered carbon fibers relative to gravity and aerodynamic force, as well as carbon fibers specification.
