  • The present study investigates the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of nanofluid droplet for different nanoparticle sizes. Also, the heat transfer coefficient was measured at different nanoparticle concentrations during evaporation. From the experimental results, it is found that the evaporation behavior of sessile droplet can be considered as constant radius mode due to pinning effect. The total evaporation time of sessile droplet decreases with nanoparticle size up to 7.9% for 0.10 vol% nanofluid droplet. As nanoparticle concentration increases, the clear difference in heat transfer coefficient is observed, showing that the size effect should be examined. This result would be helpful in designing the correlation between the nanoparticle size and the heat transfer characteristics for various applications.

  • The effect of granule size of dried red ginseng extract on physical characteristics on tablet such as hardness, color, yield and disintegration time was studied. A moisture proofing agent was found to be necessary to form granules without serious absorption of moisture. The result showed that decrease in particle size resulted increase of values in weight, hardness and disintegration time. The granule size of 60∼80 mesh was found to be optimum for proper color uniformity and other physical characteristics of tables.

  • The strength of particle-reinforced metal matrix composites is, in general, known to be increased by the geometrically necessary dislocations punched around a particle that form during cooling after consolidation because of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch between the particle and the matrix. An additional strength increase may also be observed, since another type of geometrically necessary dislocation can be formed during extensive deformation as a result of the strain gradient plasticity due to the elastic-plastic mismatch between the particle and the matrix. In this paper, the magnitudes of these two types of dislocations are calculated based on the dislocation plasticity. The dislocations are then converted to the respective strengths and allocated hierarchically to the matrix around the particle in the axisymmetric finite-element unit cell model. The proposed method is shown to be very effective by performing finite-element strength analysis of $SiC_p$/Al2124-T4 composites that included ductile failure in the matrix and particlematrix decohesion. The predicted results for different particle sizes and volume fractions show that the length scale effect of the particle size obviously affects the strength and failure behavior of the particle-reinforced metal matrix composites.

  • In this study, illite was size-reduced using a wet-ball-milling treatment to improve its dispersion. Changes in illite particle size, size distribution, and dispersion characteristics after varying the treatment period were investigated. And the dispersion and dispersion stability of illite solution after 2 h wet ball milling treatment with different pH conditions were also evaluated. The illite particle size significantly decreased as the treatment time increased and the size reduction effect of wet ball milling deteriorated above 2 h treatment time. In addition, illite particle size was more evenly distributed as the treatment time increased. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that no crystal structural changes of illite were induced, but the characteristic peak of illite the weaker due to the size reduction and exfoliation, as the treatment time increased. Zeta potential analysis showed that the illite dispersion improved, as the treatment time increased. The illite wet-ball-mill treated at pH 2 had the lowest dispersion stability. Illite dispersion and dispersion stability increased as pH increased, due to the increase in surface ionization. Hence, the results showed that as the treatment time increased, the illite particle size decreased, and dispersion and dispersion stability improved due to the increase in surface energy and repulsion force between particles.

  • The effect of the average particle size and shape of silver nanoparticles for the transparent conductive film (TCF) was studied. Optical and electrical properties of silver conductive lines coated on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was also measured. Silver nanoparticles produced by Ag-CM, Ag-ME, Ag-EE methods showed an excellent conductivity compared to those produced by Ag-EB, Ag-CR and Ag-PL methods, but a little difference in the transparency. In the case of the former three silver nanoparticles, the average particle size was about 80 nm or less and the size was uniform. For the latter case, the severe agglomeration phenomena of particles was observed and the average particle size was 100 nm or more. This result was consistent with the result of the uniformity of the pattern shape and thickness on conductive line patterns observed by SEM. Therefore, it was confirmed that the electrical characteristics could be obtained when the average particle size of silver nanoparticles is smaller and the uniformity of the particles is maintained.

  • Rapid expansion of supercritical solution (RESS) process was used to make molsidomine (MOL) loaded peracetyl-β-cyclodextrin (PAc-β-CD) nanoparticles, which were collected into the air. The effect of the concentration of the drug PAc-β-CD (0.5 and 1 wt%), extraction temperature (45 ~ 60 ℃), nozzle length (5 ~ 20 mm) and internal diameter (ID) (50 ~ 150 μm) of a capillary, and spray distance on the particle size and morphology of the resulting particles were investigated. The interaction of a drug and PAc-β-CD was confirmed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy while the particle size was measured by means of a scanning electron microscope. It was found that increasing the temperature from 45 ℃ to 60 ℃ and decreasing the nozzle diameter from 150 μm to 50 μm had an increasing effect on the average particle size, while increasing the spray distance led to a decrease in the average particle size at a constant pressure of 34.5 MPa and temperature of 45 ℃. With 0.5 wt% of PAc-β-CD, the capillary nozzle of short length (5 mm) and small ID (50 μm) gave the smallest size (165 nm). The obtained nanoparticles showed increased dispersity and solubility in oil. The oil suspension of the inclusion complex showed increased sustainability, which can increase the in-vitro controlled release time of the drug.

  • In this study, DOPC liposomes were prepared with distilled water, phosphate buffer and phosphate buffered saline to evaluate the effects of salt on the stability of DOPC liposome. The changes in physical properties (likeparticle size and zeta potential) of liposome were measured after adding the salt. Liposomes were diluted 40 times and 80 times with hydration solvent to confirm the effect of dilution. Consequently, the stability of liposome was maintained up to 40 times dilution with hydration solvent. The liposome that prepared with distilled water was diluted with distilled water, phosphate buffer and phosphate buffered saline, and the liposome that prepared with phosphate buffer was diluted with phosphate buffer and phosphate buffered saline to evaluate the salt-induced changes in particle size and zeta potentia. As results, the particle size increased slightly and zeta potential became closer to 0 when the salt concentration was increased. In conclusion, particle size and zeta potential of liposome could be reasonable factors to evaluate the stability of liposome. In addition, we suggest that salt concentration of hydration solvent has a significant effect on the stability of liposome.

  • Physical characteristics of aggregates affect the workability and strength of mortar and concrete, which include their fineness ratio, particle size distribution and water absorption. The workability of construction materials decreases if the incorporated fine aggregates show improper size distribution of their particles. This study shows the particle size effect on the rheological behavior of mortar and provides basic information for evaluating its workability. A mini-slump flow test was adopted to evaluate the workability of mortar. In addition, its plastic viscosity and yield stress were measured using a rheometer for building materials. The sand samples were prepared by sieving river sand and sorting out with their particle sizes. As a result, it was observed that the fines less than 0.7 mm increases the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the mortar samples. If the fines are less than 0.34 mm, the water absorption of the fines dominates change on the workability.

  • Spherical and non-spherical silica particles prepared by the direct oxidation were studied for the effect of the particle size and shape of these particles on oxide CMP removal rate. Spherical silica particles, which have 10~100 nm in size, were prepared by the direct oxidation process from silicon in the presence of alkali catalyst. The 10 nm silica particles were aggregated by addition of an acid, an alcohol, or a silane as an aggregation inducer between the particles. Two or more aggregated silica particles were used as a seed to grow non spherical silica particles in the direct oxidation process of silicon in the presence of alkali catalyst. The oxide removal rate of spherical silica particles increased with increasing an average particle size for spherical silica abrasives in the oxide CMP. It further increased non-spherical particles, compared with the spherical particles in the similar average particle size.

  • ZnO thin films were deposited at different repetition rates of 5 Hz and 10 Hz by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of (002) ZnO peak in ZnO thin film deposited at 5 Hz and 10 Hz was 0.22 and $0.26^{\circ}$, respectively. The grain size of ZnO thin film deposited at 5 Hz was larger than that of 10 Hz. The variation of repetition rates did not have an effect on the optical property of ZnO thin films. The degradation of the crystalline quality and surface morphology in ZnO thin film deposited at 10 Hz resulted from supersaturation effect by decrease of time interval between a ZnO particle arriving on a substrate by laser shot and a ZnO particle arriving on a substrate by next laser shot.
