  • A cylindrical tube connection that has a voltage difference and is separated electrically by an insulator was modelled. The penetration efficiencies of charged particles passing through the connector tube were investigated. Typically, as the particle size decreases and the applied voltage difference increases, the penetration efficiency decreases. To assess the effect of the electrode geometry, various lengths of electric insulator and aerosol flow rate with a fixed tube length and tube diameter were used when calculating penetration efficiencies. The comparison of penetration efficiencies for various electrode geometry setups suggests that the penetration efficiency can be described as a function of the product of applied voltage and electrical mobility of charged particles. The diffusion loss from this and previous studies are compared. Further, an explicit form for penetration efficiency is provided as a function of a new non-dimensional parameter, $Es(=Z_pV/U_{avg}W);\;P_{es}=0.2{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/0.6342)+0.8{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/4.7914)$.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the stabilization of As and heavy metals in tailings from the Samkwang Au-Ag mine with $Ca(OH)_2$. In order to evaluate the stabilization ability of As and heavy metals in the tailings, column test was implemented with various conditions as 1) particle size of $Ca(OH)_2$, 2) mixing method and 3) flow rate of eluents during 60 days. The results showed that addition with 5% of $Ca(OH)_2$ in 1kg of the tailings had the most effective ability of stabilization up to 95%. In addition, stabilization ability of As and heavy metals in tailings was enhanced using a fine powder of $Ca(OH)_2$. Therefore, stabilization technology can be used as a remediation of As and heavy metals in mine wastes including tailings and a nearby soils from abandoned metal mines.

  • In this paper heat transfer characteristics in air-solid packed bed with spherical steel particles are studied experimentally. The effect of particle sizes (${\phi}1.5,\;{\phi}2.5,\;{\phi}3.96,\;{\phi}4.75,\;{\phi}5.95,\;{\phi}7.15$), bed sizes (${\phi}50,\;{\phi}60,\;{\phi}70,\;{\phi}80$) and mass flow rate are investigated. Also heat transfer effect of the bed with particles and without particles is compared in terms of heat transfer coefficient. As a result of this experiments, the following relation is obtained in the range of the Reynolds numbers 40 between 1500. $Nu= 0.8755\;Re^{0.6367}$ (40

  • Experiments on granular filtration of polydispersed aerosols were conducted to determine the changes in pressure drop necessary to maintain a given gas flow rate as filter becomes clogged with deposited particles. Among the various variables which affect the increase in the pressure drop during the filtration, the most important one was found to be the size of the deposited aerosol particles. It was shown that for a given extent of the total deposition, the extent of increase in pressure drop increases with the decrease of the deposited aerosol size. For the general case where the deposited particles have different sizes, a procedure was proposed for correlating and predicting experimental results on pressure drop. This procedure was found applicable to bidispersed aerosols and polydispersed aerosols.

  • FePt binary-alloy nanopowder has been successfully synthesized by chemical vapor condensation process with two metal organic precursors, i.e., iron pentacarbonyl and platinum acetylacetonate. Average particle size of the powder was less than 50 nm with very narrow size distribution, revealing high dispersion capability. Characteristics of the powder could be controlled by changing process parameters such as reaction temperature, chamber pressure, as well as gas flow rate. Magnetic properties of the synthesized FePt nanopowder were investigated and analyzed in terms of the powder characteristics.

  • This study is about comparison of tangental entry type cyclone dust collector with axial vane type cyclone dust collector. Cut diameter and dust collection efficiency of both collector was compared by theory and experiment. Cut diameter was calculated by an quasi-empirical formula by Lapple and Shepherd. Measurement of cut diameter was conducted by particle counter through dust generator. As the result, cut diameter obtained by experiment was a little larger than that by theory. But the error is within $0.5{\mu}m$ in both type of collector, so it could be confirmed that theoretical value and experimental value were almost identical. And, as flow rate increased, dust collection efficiency was increased. Also axial vane type showed higher dust collection efficiency than tangental entry type. Therefore, it can be said that axial vane type cyclone dust collector has higher performance than the other.

  • The mechanism of the aerosol(mist) generation generally consists of spin-off, splash, and evaporation/condensation. Host researchers showed some theoretical model for predicting the particulate size and generation rate without real cutting in turning operation. These models were based on the spin-off mechanism, and verified good for modeling the process. However, in real machining, the cutting tool destroys the flow direction of the cutting fluid and generate the heat by the relative motion of between tool and workpicee, and so the mass loading of the mist is greatly increased as compared with non-cutting. In this paper, we show some experimental data that the mist formation characteristics of cutting is different from that of non-cutting.

  • The drainage was used to determine the specific filtration resistance for wood and non-wood fibers. The drainage rate is also affected by factors that can be changed on consistency, pressure drop across the mat, basis weight, additives, and viscosity. Recent development of theoretical studies in flow through porous media and filtration operation emphasize the urgent need for more accurate data for porosity and specific filtration resistance. This study was investigated to determine specific filtration resistance of Hw, Sw-BKP and Kenaf fiber by filtration experimental. Freeness levels selected were 150,250,and $350m\ell$ CSF. The average specific filtration resistance decreased as freeness increased and resistance of Sw-BKP was greater than that of Hw-BKP. The filtrate and porosity increased and specific filtration resistance decreased as particle size of fiber increased.

  • In this contribution, the control of multivariable reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers is presented. First, feed-forward compensators are designed using simplified decoupling method and then the PID controllers are tuned for flux (flow-rate) and conductivity (salinity). The tuning of PID controllers is accomplished by minimization of the integral of squared error (ISE). The ISEs are minimized using a recently proposed algorithm named as teacher-learner-based-optimization (TLBO). TLBO algorithm is used due to being simple and being free from algorithm-specific parameters. A comparative analysis is carried out to prove the supremacy of TLBO algorithm over other state-of-art algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) and differential evolution (DE). The simulation results and comparisons show that the purposed method performs better in terms of performance and can successfully be applied for tuning of PID controllers for RO desalination plants.

  • An experimental study was performed to develop the rotational fuel injection system of the micro turbojet engine. In this system, fuel is sprayed by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. The test rig was designed and manufactured to get droplet information on combustion space. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational device(Air-Spindle), fuel feeder, rotational fuel injector and acrylic case. To understand spray characteristics, spray droplet size, velocity and distribution were measured by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the length of liquid column from injection orifice is controlled by the rotational speeds and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) is decreased with rotational speed. Also, Sauter Mean Diameter is increased as increasing mass flow rate at same rotational speeds.
