Background: Poor participation rates are often observed in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs utilising faecal occult blood tests. This may be from dislike of faecal sampling, or having benign bleeding conditions that can interfere with test results. These barriers may be circumvented by offering a blood-based DNA test for screening. The aim was to determine if program participation could be increased by offering a blood test following faecal immunochemical test (FIT) non-participation. Materials and Methods: People were invited into a CRC screening study through their General Practice and randomised into control or intervention (n=600/group). Both groups were mailed a FIT (matching conventional screening programs). Participation was defined as FIT completion within 12wk. Intervention group non-participants were offered a screening blood test (methylated BCAT1/IKZF1). Overall participation was compared between the groups. Results: After 12wk, FIT participation was 82% and 81% in the control and intervention groups. In the intervention 96 FIT nonparticipants were offered the blood test - 22 completed this test and 19 completed the FIT instead. Total screening in the intervention group was greater than the control (88% vs 82%, p<0.01). Of 12 invitees who indicated that FIT was inappropriate for them (mainly due to bleeding conditions), 10 completed the blood test (83%). Conclusions: Offering a blood test to FIT non-participants increased overall screening participation compared to a conventional FIT program. Blood test participation was particularly high in invitees who considered FIT to be inappropriate for them. A blood test may be a useful adjunct test within a FIT program.
In order to improve participation and quick decision-making in an emergency, the Voluntary Participation Program was recommended in this study for effective management of Civil Defense. The problems in the Law and Administration group and Forced Education by Mobilization system were analyzed through actual conditions of Civil Defense management and participation. In order to improve these problems, cases such as "Extension of Participation Methods", "Cooperation Activities with Civil Groups", "Usage of Community Information" were studied. Based on the investigation results, domestic applicability was recommended.
This article aims at developing Mind Healing Program for university students, whose anxiety and depression are getting serious. Reality therapy was experimented total 10 times(one time per week), which was the revision and supplement of Woo(1994)'s reality therapy program. It consists of introducing program and self, understanding 5 mind desires, identifying obstacles of conversation, learning efficient communication skills, controling irrational expectation of others, recognizing mind gap, problems of choice and responsibility, nurturing mind, etc. The effectiveness of this program was verified through a model whose research variants were participation motivation, participation satisfaction, and mental health. Direct effects of participation motivation, participation satisfaction, and mental health were less satisfactory than indirect effects of the time when program satisfaction is a variant. It is concluded that mental health of participants is getting better when more satisfactory program should be provided, rather than motivation of simple participation.
Background and objective: Juvenile crimes tend to intensify and become habitual in South Korea and juvenile delinquencies must be corrected during adolescence. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a forest therapy program on the self-esteem and resilience of juveniles under protective detention. Methods: We designed the forest therapy program titled "A Dreamy Child, One More Forest!" for one night and two days and a total of 122 juveniles under protective detention participated in the program. Self-esteem scale (SES) and resilience scale for adolescents (RSA) were used and the collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis and T-test. Results: Most of the participants were male (96.7%), and the number of those aged 17 years was highest (35, 28.7%). The number of those enrolled in middle and high school was 69 (56.0%) and that of those who dropped out was 39 (31.9%). Their self-esteem significantly increased from 3.102 before participation to 3.636 (p < .001) after participation in the forest therapy program. Resilience also increased remarkably from 2.950 before participation to 3.829 (p < .001) after participation, showing positive changes after participation in both cases. Conclusion: The results indicated the forest therapy program could enhance the self-esteem of juveniles under protective detention, provide them with an opportunity for developing their inner positive power and reinforcomg resilience, helping them return to society in a healthy state. Further research needs to be conducted on how the effects over the program period will differ from one another and how long the positive effects will last.

This study develops an informal science education program based on a creative design for the promotion of participation and action and explores the validity and effectiveness of the program. The program consists of three mini-projects, namely, The Martian: Surviving from the Mars, So Good to Have Seonjeongneung, and Designing a Sunshine Restaurant, with distinct topics focusing on the localization and contextualization of the region in which the program was implemented to encourage students' participation and action. The researchers selected three topics for each mini-project through discussions and revisions. The program is designed for 42 lessons across the three mini-projects and offers a presentation session in which students present their learnings from the program, constructed to facilitate personal contextualization. Participants included 15 elementary school students from Grades 5 and 6 who took surveys before and after the program. The pre-post surveys comprised two dimensions, 'Participation and Action' and 'Positive Experience about Science,' to examine the effectiveness of the program. At the end of the survey, we added a self-descriptive question that allows students to freely write down their feelings and thoughts. We checked the students' thoughts. The effectiveness of the program was illustrated by the largest increase in the "safe society" category, whereas there was little increase in other categories under the 'participation and Action' dimension in the Korean Science Education Standards. 'Science-related Self-concept' exhibited the largest increase, whereas the other categories displayed little increase from the 'Positive Experience about Science' dimension category.
Objectives: We evaluated the extent to which implementation of student participation programs in serving school meals impacts student perception and satisfaction with school foodservice in middle and high school settings. Methods: Students' perception of management and satisfaction with quality attributes of school foodservice were assessed by questionnaire methods and compared by the program implementation status of student participation in serving school meals. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors affecting perception and satisfaction. Results: The overall mean score for perception regarding the management of school foodservice was low (3.53 out of 10 points) and middle school students showed a higher mean score than high school students (4.10 vs. 2.94 points). In both middle and high schools, student perception was significantly higher in schools implementing the program. The average score for student satisfaction with the quality of school foodservice was 3.50 out of 5 points. Similarly, we observed a significantly higher satisfaction among middle versus high school students (3.93 vs. 3.04 points) and in schools implementing the program versus those that were not. Overall, student participation in serving school meals resulted in increases in satisfaction with school foodservice of 0.269 and 0.466 points among middle and high school students, respectively. Conclusions: Implementation of student participation in serving school meals could be used as a strategy to improve perception and satisfaction of students with their school foodservice. Establishment of guidelines of student serving participation programs encompassing different perspectives from students, dietitians and school faculties are warranted.
Background : Cancer is the leading cause of death and one of the largest burdens of disease in Korea. In 1996, the Ten year Plan for Cancer Control was formulated and the government then adopted the plan as a national policy. As part of this plan, the National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP) for Medicaid recipients was formulated, and the government adapted this in 1999. For low-income beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC), the screening program has been in place since 2002. In 2002, the target cancers of NCSP were stomach, breast and cervical cancer. This study was conducted to examine the relationships between the participation rate, the abnormal screening rate and the socio-demographic factors associated with participation in the screening program. Methods : To analyze the participation rate and abnormal rate for the NCSP, we used the 2002 NCSP records. The information on the socio-demographic factors was available from the database of the beneficiaries in the NHIC and Medicaid. Results : The participation rate of the Medicaid beneficiaries for the stomach, breast and cervical cancer screening were 9.2%, 15.5% and 15.0%, respectively, and 11.3% and 12.5%, except cervical cancer which wasn't be included in the NCSP, for the beneficiaries of the NHIC. The abnormal rate of stomach, breast and cervical cancer screening were 25.7%, 11.2% and 21.0%, respectively, for the beneficiaries of Medicaid and 42.6% and 19.4% for the beneficiaries of the NHIC. On the multiple logistic regression analysis, gender, age and place of residence were significantly associated with participation rates of the NCSP. For stomach cancer, women participated in the NCSP more than men. The participation rate was higher among people in their fifties and sixties than for those people in their forties and those people over seventy years in age. For the breast and cervical cancer, people in their fifties were more likely to participate in the NCSP than people in their forties and people over sixty. For the place of residence, people in the rural areas participated more than those people in any other places. Conclusions : The above results show that the participation rate and abnormal rate were significantly associated with the socio-demographic factors. To improve the participation rate for the NCSP, more attention should be given to the underserved groups.
This study applied an occupation-centered transition program to adults, aged 18 years or more, with intellectual disabilities and residing in a local community, and examined the effects of the program on participants' self-efficacy and social participation. To obtain basic data for the program, 44 adults with intellectual disability were divided into two groups: the experimental group, to which an occupation-centered transition program was applied, and the control group, to which the program was not applied. A self-efficacy scale and the K-Community participation indicators (CPI) were used to assess self-efficacy and social participation, respectively. The results showed that the experimental group showed a greater increase in self-efficacy than the control group (p<0.05). Similarly, a greater increase in the CPI scores was observed in the experimental group than in the control group. The changes in the experimental group were significant (p<0.05), but those in the control group were not. These results suggest that an occupation-centered transition program can improve self-efficacy and social participation in adults with an intellectual disability.

As the citizens have the high level of knowledge and information in this society, they tend to participate the local government adminstration in various methods. The purpose of this study is to review the citizen participation programs which have been applied in local government administration, to determine the appropriate citizen participation programs for public libraries, to survey the Korean public libraries' citizen participation programs through the questionaries which have been developed and analyze the data, and to propose the success strategy of citizen participation programs in the public libraries. Also, tips for the efficient and dynamic public library administration by the citizen participation programs were provided based on inadequacies and other findings revealed through this study.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the participation rate of the National Health Screening Program (NHSP) and its influencing factors by cognitive function level in Korean older adults. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis using data from the survey of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging in 2016. The data were analyzed using 𝑥2 test and multiple logistic regression. Results: The participation rates of the NHSP in the mild cognitive impairment group (79.6%) and the suspected dementia group (58.0%) were lower than the normal cognitive function group (88.1%). The factors influencing NHSP varied by cognitive function level. Especially, in the suspected dementia group, higher participation rates of the NHSP were associated with living in rural areas, enrollment in private health insurance, no depressive symptoms, participation in social activities, and no living with children. Depression and participation in social activities influenced participation in NHSP in all groups. Conclusion: This study suggests that interventions differentiated by cognitive function level are important for increasing the participation in the health screening.
