  • The potential of combustion treatment of low concentration VOC on a turbulent partially premixed flame has been studied experimentally. The significant decrease in hydrocarbon concentration from the low concentration VOC was observed with a turbulent partially premixed flame. The VOC/inert gas mixture whose fuel concentration is beyond the flammability limit could be treated in this method.

  • The zone-conditioned CMC equations are derived by taking an unconditional average of the generic conservation equations multiplied by delta and Heaviside functions in terms of mixture fraction and reaction progress variable. The resulting equations are essentially in the same form as the single zone CMC equations except for separate flow fields for burned and unburned gas. The zone-conditioned two-fluid equations are applied to a stagnating turbulent premixed flame brush of Cheng and Shepherd[5l. It is shown that the flame stretch factor is of crucial importance to accurately reproduce the measured mean reaction progress variable and conditional velocities. Further work is in progress for the relationship between surface and volume averages and extension to partially premixed combustion on the basis of a triple flame structure, e. g. in a lifted turbulent diffusion flame.

  • Combustion of low concentration VOC in inert gas around the flammability limit has been experimentally studied. Streams of nitrogen and propane mixture with various compositions and flow conditions were treated by a turbulent partially-premixed pilot flame. HC and CO contents in exhaust gas measured and the flow patterns were visualized. The results suggested that there exists an optimal mixture velocity range for efficient combustion treatment for each flow condition and composition of the mixture.

  • The present study is focused on the subgrid scale combustion model in context with a Large Eddy Simulation. In order to deal with detailed chemical kinetic, the level-set method based on a flamelet model is addressed. In this model, the flame front is treated as an interface, represented by an iso-surface of a scalar field G. This iso-surface is convected by the velocity field and its filtered quantities are include the turbulent burning velocity, which is to be modelled. For modelling the turbulent burning velocity, an equation for the length-scale of the sub-filter flame front fluctuations was developed. The formulations and issues for the turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames are addressed in detail.

  • The present study is aiming at numerically analyze the soot formation processes coupled with gas reaction mechanism in turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames. In order to realistically represent turbulence-chemistry interactions with detailed chemical kinetics and soot formation behaviour related to the turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames, the transient flamelet[1] and flamelet based level-set approach[2] are coupled with soot formation based on the two equation model [3] and DQMOM (Direct Quadrature Method of Moment)[4].

  • This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.

  • LES results of turbulent premixed combustion flows are introduced by using the dynamic sub-grid scale model based on G-equation describing the flame front propagation. The turbulent premixed combustion flows around bluff body and over backward facing step are analyzed to validate present formation. LES of swirling partially premixed combustion flame is also performed to conform the predictive capabilities of LES model and to prompt our understanding for the combustion flows over double cone swirl burner combustor by using CFD-ACE+ commercial code.

  • Large-scale fuel tanks emit massive amount of hardly-combustible VOC mixtures which are light hydrocarbon species in dilution with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. We have developed a lab-scale burner to combust those VOC mixtures by use of a turbulent partially-premixed flame as a pilot flame. For a higher HC treatment ratio, the mixture gases were reformed by a rotating arc plasma device. The results showed that the nitrogen mole fraction and the injecting speed of the VOC mixture influence on the performance of the burner. It was also found that the size of the pilot flame and the power supplied to the plasma device determine the overall HC treatment ratio and the concentrations of CO and NOx in the exhaust gas.

  • The flamelet concept has been widely applied to numerically simulate complex phenomena occurred in nonpremixed turbulent flames last two decades, and recently broadened successfully the applicable capabilities to various combustion problems from simple laboratory flames to gas turbine engine, diesel spray combustion and partially premixed flames. The paper is focused on brief review of recently noticeable work related to flamelet modeling, which includes Lagrangian flamelet approach, RIF concept as well as steady flamelet approach. The limitation of steady flamelet assumption, the effect of transient behavior of flamelets, and the effect of spray vaporization on PDF model have been discussed.

  • Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.
