A novel combination of sodium metabisulfite and a chemical mixture based on sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and sodium nitrite for aerobic preservation of fruit and vegetable discards and lactic acid fermentation in a total mixed ration for ruminants

  • Objective: Our recent findings confirmed the effectiveness of sodium metabisulfite (SMB) in controlling the growth of undesirable microorganisms in fruit and vegetable discards (FVD); however, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are susceptible to its antibacterial effects. Two series of experiments were conducted to enable the survivability of LAB during silage fermentation of a total mixed ration (TMR) containing SMB-treated FVD. Methods: In Exp. 1, the objective was to isolate a strain of LAB tolerable to the toxic effect of SMB. In Exp. 2, the SMB load was minimized through its partial replacement with a chemical mixture (CM) based on sodium benzoate (57%), potassium sorbate (29%), and sodium nitrite (14%). FVD was treated with SMB + CM (2 g each/kg biomass) and added to the TMR at varying levels (0%, 10%, or 20%), with or without KU18 inoculation. Results: The KU18 was screened as a presumptive LAB strain showing superior tolerance to SMB in broth medium, and was identified at the molecular level using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as Lactobacillus plantarum. Inoculation of KU18 in TMR containing SMB was not successful for the LAB development, biomass acidification, and organoleptic properties of the resultant silage. In Exp. 2, based on the effectiveness and economic considerations, an equal proportion of SMB and CM (2 g each/kg FVD) was selected as the optimal loads for the subsequent silage fermentation experiment. Slight differences were determined in LAB development, biomass acidification, and sensorial characteristics among the experimental silages, suggesting the low toxicity of the preservatives on LAB growth. Conclusion: Although KU18 strain was not able to efficiently develop in silage mass containing SMB-treated FVD, the partial substitution of SMB load with the CM effectively alleviated the toxic effect of SMB and allowed LAB development during the fermentation of SMB + CM-treated FVD in TMR.

Mechanical properties and durability of roller-compacted concrete incorporating powdered and granulated blast furnace slag in frost regions

  • The mechanical properties and durability of concrete pavements may be degraded in extreme situations, resulting in the need for partial repair or total replacement. During the past few decades, there has been a growing body of research on substituting a portion of Portland cement with alternative cementitious materials for improving concrete properties. In this study, two different configurations of powdered and granulated blast furnace slag were implemented, replacing fine aggregates (by 12 wt.%) and Portland cement (by 0, 20, 40, and 60 wt.%) in the making of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) mixes. The specimens were fabricated to investigate the mechanical properties and durability specifications, involving freeze-thaw, salt-scaling, and water absorption resistance. The experimental results indicated that the optimum mechanical properties of RCC mixes could be achieved when 20-40 wt.% of powdered slag was added to concrete mixes containing slag aggregates. Accordingly, the increases in compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths were 45, 50, and 28%, in comparison to the control specimen at the age of 90 days. Also, incorporating 60 wt.% of powdered slag gave rise to the optimum mix plan in terms of freeze-thaw resistance such that a negligible strength degradation was experienced after 300 cycles. In addition, the optimal moisture content of the proposed RCC mixtures was measured to be in the range of 5 to 6.56%. Furthermore, the partial addition of granulated slag was found to be more advantageous than using entirely natural sand in the improvement of the mechanical and durability characteristics of all mixture plans.

Online resources for information on shoulder arthroplasty: an assessment of quality and readability

  • Background: Many patients use online resources to educate themselves on surgical procedures and make well-informed healthcare decisions. The aim of our study was to evaluate the quality and readability of online resources exploring shoulder arthroplasty. Methods: An internet search pertaining to shoulder arthroplasty (partial, anatomic, and reverse) was conducted using the three most popular online search engines. The top 25 results generated from each term in each search engine were included. Webpages were excluded if they were duplicates, advertised by search engines, subpages of other pages, required payments or subscription, or were irrelevant to our scope. Webpages were classified into different source categories. Quality of information was assessed by HONcode certification, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) criteria, and DISCERN benchmark criteria. Webpage readability was assessed using the Flesch reading ease score (FRES). Results: Our final dataset included 125 web pages. Academic sources were the most common with 45 web pages (36.0%) followed by physician/private practice with 39 web pages (31.2%). The mean JAMA and DISCERN scores for all web pages were 1.96±1.31 and 51.4±10.7, respectively. The total mean FRES score was 44.0±11.0. Only nine web pages (7.2%) were HONcode certified. Websites specified for healthcare professionals had the highest JAMA and DISCERN scores with means of 2.92±0.90 and 57.96±8.91, respectively (P<0.001). HONcode-certified webpages had higher quality and readability scores than other web pages. Conclusions: Web-based patient resources for shoulder arthroplasty information did not show high-quality scores and easy readability. When presenting medical information, sources should maintain a balance between readability and quality and should seek HONcode certification as it helps establish the reliability and accessibility of the presented information. Behcet씨 병과 동반된 대동맥판막 폐쇄부전에서 동종이식편을 이용한 대동맥근부 치환술 (Homograft Aortic Root Replacement for Aortic Regurgitation with Behcet's Disease)

  • 배경: Behcet씨 병과 동반된 대동맥판막 폐쇄부전에서 인공 대동맥판막 치환술 후 발생하는 인공판륜 주위 누출이나 가성동맥류는 가장 심각한 합병증의 하나로써, 재수술을 필요로 한다. 저자들은 Behcet씨 병과 동반된 대동맥판막 폐쇄부전 환자에서 동종이식편을 이용한 대동맥근부 치환술 결과를 알아보고자 하였다. 방법 및 대상: 1992년 1월부터 2001년 12월까지 저자들은 6명의 Behcet씨 병 환자에서 동종이식편을 이용한 근부치환술 7례와 1례의 Ross 술식을 시행하였다. 남자 5명, 여자가 1명이었으며 수술 당시 평균 연령은 37$\pm$9세(27~51세)였다. 2명은 1차 수술에서 동종이식편을 이용한 근부치환술을 시행하였고 다른 4명은 대동맥판막 치환술 후 발생한 인공판륜 주위 누출로 동종이식편을 이용하여 근부치환술을 시행하였다. 인공판막치환술 후 재수술까지 평균 기간은 21 $\pm$29개월(5 ~73.3개월, 중앙값, 7.6 개월)이였다. 결과: 동종이식편을 이용한 근부치환술 후 조기 사망은 없었다. 6명에서 평균 18.9$\pm$24.0개월(1.9~68.9개월, 중앙값, 8.4개월)을 추적 관찰하였다. 판막치 환술 후 동종이식편을 이용한 근부치환술 환자 4명중 2명에서 상행대동맥에 발생한 가성동맥류와 폐동맥 동종이식편의 기능 부전으로 재수술이 필요하였다. 1명은 대동맥 동종이식편을 이용하여 대동맥근부, 상행대동맥 및 부분 대동맥궁을 재치환하였으며 다른 1명은 Ross수술을 시행하였다. 결론: 본 연구 결과 Behcet씨 병과 동반된 대동맥판막 폐쇄부전에서 동종이식편이나 폐동맥 자가이식편을 이용한 대동맥근부.치환술은 양호한 조기 수술 결과를 보이며, 인공판막 치환술 후 발생할 수 있는 인공판륜 주위 누출이나 가성동맥류의 발생을 줄일 수 있다. 그렇지만 Behcet씨 병의 정확한 진단과 수술 전후 적절한 내과적인 치료 및 수술시 염증 조직의 완전한 제거가 장기 결과의 향상을 위해 매우 중요할 것으로 사료된다.

  • An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate three types of squid Sepia esculenta liver powder (SLP) as a dietary protein source for replacement of fish meal (FM) in the juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. For replacement of FM, six experimental diets were formulated with 5 or 10% of either of three types (A, B, C) of SLP: SLP-$A_5$, SLP-$A_{10}$, SLP-$B_5$, SLP-$B_{10}$, SLP-$C_5$, and SLP-$C_{10}$. One of the control diets contained 100% FM as the protein source, and the other was a commercial diet (Com). Fish with an average body weight of $6.50{\pm}0.03g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were allocated randomly in triplicate groups of 50 to aquaria and fed the experimental diets until satiation. The weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed the FM, SLP-$A_5$, SLP-$A_{10}$, and SLP-$B_5$ diets were higher than those of fish fed the Com, SLP-$B_{10}$, SLP-$C_5$ and SLP-$C_{10}$ diets. No significant differences were observed in WG and SGR among the diet groups, with the exception of the SLP-$C_{10}$ diet group. The feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed the SLP-$A_5$, SLP-$A_{10}$, and SLP-$B_5$ diets did not differ from those fed the control diet. However, fish fed SLP-$B_{10}$ and SLP-$C_{10}$ had lower FE and PER than the fish fed the FM, commercial, SLP-$A_5$, SLP-$A_{10}$, and SLP-$B_5$ diets. Both the SLP-A and SLP-B diets, but not the SLP-C diets, replaced up to 10% and 5% of FM for juvenile black rockfish, respectively. The results of this experiment provide information that will assist in formulating an inexpensive and practical diet containing SLP for juvenile black rockfish.

흉부 대동맥류의 외과적 치료 (Early Results in Surgical Treatment of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm)

  • 저자들은 1994년 2월부터 1995년 8월사이에 본 교실에서 흉부대동맥류로 외과적 치료를 받았던 15 례의 임상성적을 분석하여 수술수기 및 수술결과를 향상시키는 계기로 삼고저 한다. 남자가 9례, 여자 가 6례였으며 평균연령은 55.07$\pm$11.76세였다. 원인질환은 대동맥박리증이 9례, 죽상경화증이 4례, 외 상이 2례이었다. 9례에서 상행 대동맥 및 대동맥궁의 부분 및 완전 치환술을 시행하였으며 3례에서 하행 대동맥 및 흉복부 대동맥치 환술을 시행하였고, 1례에서는 전체 대동백치환술을 시행하였으며, 외 상성 대동맥류 2례에서는 단단문합하였는데 대동맥 박리증 환자에서는 Wheat씨 방법으로 봉합부위를 보강한 후 치환하였다. 9례에서는 정중흉골절개술을, 4례에서는 후외측 흉벽절개술을, 2례에서는 후외 측 흉부절개후 흉복부절개술을 시행하였다. 상행 대동맥 및 대동맥궁을 치환하였던 9례에서는 상대정맥을 통한 역행성 뇌관류를 평균 56.67$\pm$29.25분 동안 시행하였고 하행 대동맥 및 흉복부 대동맥을 치환하였던 3례에서도 고도의 저체온화를 시행하였는데 술후 항구적인 뇌나 척추 신경장애가 발생한 례는 없었다. 술후 외상성 복담즙에 의한 복막염, 다장기 기능부전, 악성고혈압에 의한 잔여 박리성 동 맥류파열로 3례(20%, 3/15)가 사망하였다. 술후 합병증으로는 출혈에 의한 재수술이 4례, 일시적인 의식장애 3례, 늑막삼출 등의 폐 합병증이 3례, 심낭압진 1례 있었다. 타의료기관에서 관찰중인 1례를 제외한 11례를 추적관찰중인데 사망하거나 만기 합병증을 보인 례는 없었다.

Comparison of the effect of lithium bentonite and sodium bentonite on the engineering properties of bentonite-cement-sodium silicate grout

  • This paper focuses on the engineering properties of Bentonite-Cement-Sodium silicate (BCS) grout, which was prepared by partially replacing the ordinary Portland cement in Cement-Sodium silicate grout with lithium bentonite (Li-bent) and sodium bentonite (Na-bent), respectively. The effect of different Water-to-Solid ratio (W/S) and various replacement percentages of bentonite on the apparent viscosity, bleeding, setting time, and early compressive strength of BCS grout were investigated. The XRD method was used to detect its hydration products. The results showed that both bentonites played a positive role in the stability of BCS grout, increased its apparent viscosity. Na-bent prolonged the setting time of BCS, while 5% of Li-bent shortened the setting time of BCS. The XRD analysis indicated that the hydration products between the mixture containing Na-bent and Li-bent did not differ much. Using bentonite as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to replace partial cement is a promising way to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions and to produce low-cost, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and water-resistant grout. In addition, Li-bent was superior to Na-bent in improving the strength and the thickening of BCS grouts.

활성 황토 콘크리트 보의 휨 성능 (Flexural Performance of Activated Hwangtoh Concrete Beam)

  • 지금까지 환경 친화적 재료로서 황토에 관한 연구는 포틀랜드 시멘트를 부분적 대체하거나, 완전 대체하는 연구로 진행되어 왔다. 기존의 대부분의 연구에서는 압축강도, 건조수축, 크리프 등 황토 콘크리트의 역학적 성질에 초점이 맞춰졌다. 이 연구에서는 황토 콘크리트로 제작된 보 실험체의 휨 성능을 실험하였다. 이번 실험에서는 시멘트를 20% 대체하는 활성 황토를 사용한 콘크리트와 시멘트를 100% 대체하는 활성 황토 콘크리트가 사용되었다. 단순보 실험은 2점 정적 재하 하중으로 실험하였다. 휨 강도, 균열 모멘트, 처짐, 연성도 등의 결과를 일반 포틀랜드 시멘트 콘크리트로 제작된 보의 실험 결과와 비교하였다.

Ca1-xSrxS:Ce 형광체의 합성과 광 특성 (Synthesis and Optical Properties of Ca1-xSrxS:Ce Phosphors)

  • Ca1-xSrxS:Ce 형광체를 고상법으로 합성하였다. Ca1-xSrxS:Ce 형광체는 430nm와 470nm 영역에서 강한 흡수가 있다. CaS:Ce은 510 nm와 570 nm에서 발광한다. Ca1-xSrxS:Ce에서 Ca이 Sr으로 치환되면 발광 파장은 단파장 이동을 한다. 청색 발광 다이오드를 사용하여 백색 발광 다이오드를 얻는데 Ca1-xSrxS:Ce 형광체는 푸른빛을 띤 녹색과 황색을 방출할 수 있는 형광체로 사용될 수 있다. 백색 발광 다이오드의 적용을 위한 Ca1-xSrxS:Ce 형광체의 광 특성을 확인하였다.

  • The term "Oligodontia" or "Hypodontia" have been used to describe variable degrees of reduction in number of teeth. Oligodontia may occur alone or as a result of some syndrome. Although the teeth are derived in part from ectoderm, the current opinion of reason of oligodontia should be reserved for those disorders in which there is abnormal development of one or more ectodermal tissues. 7 year 5 months old female was refered to the department of pedodontics, college of dentistry Yonsei university for evaluation and replacement of absent teeth. She had no special inf.ectious disease in her childhood, and her parents were healthy. She had no special syndrome of ectodermal disorders except the saddle nose, yellow and fine hair, and notched upper anterior central incisor. Panex radiogram was showing 6 anterior primary teeth, 2 permanent first molars and 2 unerupted first bicuspid in mandible. Another permanent teeth were absent. and normal number of primary and permanent teeth in maxilla. Lateral cephalogram showed no special abnormality in growth pattern. We had evaluated lower anterior decayed teeth with jacket resin and chrome steel crown and removable partial denture at missing area. We had got good results for rehabilitation of function and aesthetic.
