  • Modern mobile devices are equipped with various accelerated processing units to handle computationally intensive applications; therefore, Open Computing Language (OpenCL) has been proposed to fully take advantage of the computational power in heterogeneous systems. This article introduces a parallel software decoder of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes on an embedded heterogeneous platform using an OpenCL framework. The LDPC code is one of the most popular and strongest error correcting codes for mobile communication systems. Each step of LDPC decoding has different parallelization characteristics. In the proposed LDPC decoder, steps suitable for task-level parallelization are executed on the multi-core central processing unit (CPU), and steps suitable for data-level parallelization are processed by the graphics processing unit (GPU). To improve the performance of OpenCL kernels for LDPC decoding operations, explicit thread scheduling, vectorization, and effective data transfer techniques are applied. The proposed LDPC decoder achieves high performance and high power efficiency by using heterogeneous multi-core processors on a unified computing framework.

  • We present a low-density parity-check (LDPC)-based, threaded layered space-time-frequency system with emphasis on the iterative receiver design. First, the unbiased minimum mean-squared-error iterative-tree-search (U-MMSE-ITS) detector, which is known to be one of the most efficient multi-input multi-output (MIMO) detectors available, is improved by augmentation of the partial-length paths and by the addition of one-bit complement sequences. Compared with the U-MMSE-ITS detector, the improved detector provides better detection performance with lower complexity. Furthermore, the improved detector is robust to arbitrary MIMO channels and to any antenna configurations. Second, based on the structure of the iterative receiver, we present a low-complexity belief-propagation (BP) decoding algorithm for LDPC-codes. This BP decoder not only has low computing complexity but also converges very fast (5 iterations is sufficient). With the efficient receiver employing the improved detector and the low-complexity BP decoder, the proposed system is a promising solution to high-data-rate transmission over selective-fading channels.

  • We design multilevel coding(MLC) with a semi bit-interleaved coded modulation(BICM) scheme based on low density parity check(LDPC) codes. Different from traditional designs, we joint the MLC and BICM together by using the Gray mapping, which can transmit the multimedia data over several equivalent channels with different code rates. To get a good performance from signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) very close to the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel, random regular LDPC code and a simple semi-algebra LDPC(SA-LDPC) code are discussed in MLC with parallel independent decoding(PID). Finally, the numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme could achieve both power and bandwidth efficiency for multimedia communication system.

  • In this paper, we consider a framework of compressed sensing over finite fields. One measurement sample is obtained by an inner product of a row of a sensing matrix and a sparse signal vector. A recovery algorithm proposed in this study for sparse signals based probabilistic decoding is used to find a solution of compressed sensing. Until now compressed sensing theory has dealt with real-valued or complex-valued systems, but for the processing of the original real or complex signals, the loss of the information occurs from the discretization. The motivation of this work can be found in efforts to solve inverse problems for discrete signals. The framework proposed in this paper uses a parity-check matrix of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes developed in coding theory as a sensing matrix. We develop a stochastic algorithm to reconstruct sparse signals over finite field. Unlike LDPC decoding, which is published in existing coding theory, we design an iterative algorithm using probability distribution of sparse signals. Through the proposed recovery algorithm, we achieve better reconstruction performance as the size of finite fields increases. Since the sensing matrix of compressed sensing shows good performance even in the low density matrix such as the parity-check matrix, it is expected to be actively used in applications considering discrete signals.

  • In this paper, a modified sum-product algorithm to correct bit errors captured within the trapping sets, which are produced in decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, is proposed. Unlike the original sum-product algorithm, the proposed decoding method consists of two stages. Whether the main cause of decoding failure is the trapping sets or not is determined at the first stage. And the bit errors within the trapping sets are corrected at the second stage. In the modified algorithm, the set of failed check nodes and the transition patterns of hard-decision bits are exploited to search variable nodes in the trapping sets. After inverting information of the variable nodes, the sum-product algorithm is carried out to correct the bit errors. As a result of simulation, the proposed algorithm shows continuously improved error performance with increase in the signal-to-noise ratio. It is, therefore, considered that the modified sum-product algorithm significantly reduces or possibly eliminates the error floor in LDPC codes.

  • The wireless communication based on LDPC and adaptive spatial-subcarrier coded modulation using MQAM for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless transmission by using instantaneous channel state information and employing multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver. Adaptive coded modulation is a promising idea for bandwidth-efficient transmission on time-varying, narrowband wireless channels. On power limited Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels, low density parity check (LDPC) codes are a class of error control codes which have demonstrated impressive error correcting qualities, under some conditions performing even better than turbo codes. The paper demonstrates OFDM with LDPC and adaptive modulation applied to Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. An optimization algorithm to obtain a bit and power allocation for each subcarrier assuming instantaneous channel knowledge is used. The experimental results are shown the potential of our proposed system.

  • In this paper, we first review LDPC codes in general and a belief propagation algorithm that works in logarithm domain. LDPC codes, which is chosen for second generation digital video broadcasting standard, are required a large number of computation due to large size of coded block and iteration. Therefore, we presented two kinds of low computational algorithm for LDPC codes. First, sequential decoding with partial group is proposed. It has same H/W complexity, and fewer number of iteration's are required at same performance in comparison with conventional decoder algerian. Secondly, early detection method for reducing the computational complexity is proposed. Using a confidence criterion, some bit nodes and check node edges are detected early on during decoding. Through the simulation, we knew that the iteration number are reduced by half using subset algorithm and computational complexity of early detected method is about $50\%$ offs in case of check node update, $99\%$ offs in case of check node update compared to conventional scheme.

  • This paper proposes two kinds of complexity-reduced algorithms for a low density parity check (LDPC) decoder. First, sequential decoding using a partial group is proposed. It has the same hardware complexity and requires a fewer number of iterations with little performance loss. The amount of performance loss can be determined by the designer, based on a tradeoff with the desired reduction in complexity. Second, an early detection method for reducing the computational complexity is proposed. Using a confidence criterion, some bit nodes and check node edges are detected early on during decoding. Once the edges are detected, no further iteration is required; thus early detection reduces the computational complexity.

  • In this paper, a concatenated RS and Turbo code is proposed for OFDM system over burst error channel. The concatenated code used in this study is a RS(255,2D2) code and a rate 1/2 turbo code. The turbo code uses 2 recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) code as the constituent codes and the parity bit are punctured to get the desired code rate. It is shown by simulation that the conventional OFDM system fails when there exists burst noise. The concatenated RS and turbo code obtains at least 5dB gain over the turbo code at the bit error probability of $10^{-3}$.
