  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between marital conflict, parental control, and adolescents' anxiety. The participants were composed of 319 high school $1^{st}$ graders (of which 153 were boys and 165 were girls) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on marital conflict, parental control, and adolescents' anxiety. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that marital conflict (frequency/intensity/resolution/content) was positively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. Parental psychological control was also positively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. However parental behavioral control was negatively correlated with adolescents' anxiety. In addition marital conflict was positively correlated with parental psychological control in contrast with that of behavioral control. It was further found that parental psychological and behavioral control partially mediated the relationship between marital conflict and adolescents' anxiety. These results clearly indicate that parental control plays a crucial role in marital conflict and adolescents' anxiety.

A total of 490 fifth- and sixth-graders in Andong City were surveyed. Data were collected using a questionnaire for their parental attachment, self-control ability, and peer relationships and analyzed using the t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, the hierarchical regression analysis, and the Sobel test. The results indicate significant differences in parental attachment, self-control ability, and peer relationships according to gender. Parental attachment was significantly correlated with emotional control ability and behavioral control ability, and there were significant correlations between parental attachment and peer relationships and between self-control ability and peer relationships. Parental attachment had a significant direct effect on peer relationships, and self-control ability mediated the relationship between parental attachment and peer relationships.

  • This study examined the direct and indirect influences of parental behavioral control on adolescents' school related adjustment by exploring pathways between parental behavioral control, adolescents' anxiety, and school related adjustment. Participants were composed of 319 high school 1st graders (153 male and 165 female students) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on parental behavioral control, adolescents' anxiety, and adolescents' school related adjustment. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficients, Factor Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling. It was adapted to SPSS version 19.0 and Amos version 21.0 for Windows. The results indicated that adolescents' anxiety partially mediated the association of parental behavioral control and adolescents' school related adjustment. More concretely, direct effect of adolescents' anxiety on adolescents' school related adjustment were slightly greater than the direct/indirect effects of parental behavioral control on adolescents' school related adjustment. The effect of adolescents' anxiety on adolescents' school related adjustment was the greatest among all associations between research variables. The findings of this study have implications for research and practice that highlights the important considerations for proper parental behavioral control and reducing adolescents' anxiety that should be emphasized to improve adolescents' school related adjustment. We believe that improved parental behavioral control needs to be emphasized when designing prevention and parent intervention education programs for adolescents' psychological problem and school related adjustment.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between marital conflict, parental control and children's depression. The participants were composed of 243 elementary school 5th and 6th graders (of which 121 were boys and 122 were girls) from Gyeonggi-do province. They completed questionnaires on marital conflict, parental control and children's depression. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. It was observed that marital conflict (content) had an effect on children's depression. Parental psychological control was also found to have an effect on children's depression. However, parental behavioral control did not appear to have an effect on children's depression. In addition marital conflict (frequency/content) had an effect on parental psychological control. Additionally, marital conflict (resolution) had an effect on parental behavioral control. It was further found that paternal psychological control and maternal psychological control partially mediated the relationship between marital conflict and children's depression. These results clearly indicate that parental psychological control plays an important role in marital conflict and children's depression.

A statistical analysis was conducted using a t-test, a correlation analysis, and a multiple regression analysis. According to the results, there were significant differences in preschool children's leadership according to the child's age. According to a correlation analysis, parental leadership and verbal person-oriented control modes had significant positive correlations with preschool children's leadership, and imperative control and position-oriented control modes had negative correlations. In addition, parental leadership and verbal control modes were significant predictors of preschool children's leadership. In particular, parents' communication skill, relationship skill, group activity skill, person-oriented control mode, and position-oriented control mode were significant predictors of preschool children's leadership.

The subjects were 303 fourth and sixth grade children selected from three elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, and a perception of parental warmth and control scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, t-test, one-way-ANOVA, and $Scheffe{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data analysis. There were significant differences in children's self-perceived competence by perception of parental warmth and control. The children who perceived more parental warmth and control perceived themselves higher in cognitive and social competence and in self-worth. • This study examined links between parental monitoring of child's daily activities, 3 sources of parents' knowledge, and children's deviant behaviors and self-esteem. Participants were 276 tenth grade boys. Children completed questionnaires about parental monitoring and their own internal adjustments and deviant behaviors. High parental control was linked to less deviant behavior in children regardless of children's feelings of being controlled. The association between parental control and children's feelings of being controlled was moderated by children's depression. Parental control was not related to children's depression and self-esteem, and further, children's feelings of being controlled were not related to self-esteem after controlling for depression. The findings suggest that parental control efforts are an effective way to prevent children's deviant behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mothers' parental intelligence and children's abilities of self-control and empathy. 180 children aged 5 were selected from 4 kindergartens in G city. The gender breakdown for the sample group was as follows : boys comprised 60.0% (108) and girls comprised 40.0% (72) of the total sample. The Parental Intelligence Scales (PIS) was used to rate mothers' parental intelligence. Children's self-control and empathy were also measured. The SPSS 12.0 program was used for the purposes of analyzing the data. The results of the study were as follows. Firstly, mothers' parental intelligence was related in a general sense with children's self-control. However, such a relationship did not appear between rejection in the area of parental intelligence and self appraisal in self-control, nor did it appear between acceptance in intelligence and emotion in self-control. Secondly, the variable of encouragement was the only one in evidence in terms of mothers' parental intelligence and how it was related with children's empathy.
