  • The objective of this paper was to evaluate the auto-calibration with multi-objective optimization method to calibrate the parameters of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The model was calibrated and validated by using nine years (1996-2004) of measured data for the 384-ha Baran reservoir subwatershed located in central Korea. Multi-objective optimization was performed for sixteen parameters related to runoff. The parameters were modified by the replacement or addition of an absolute change. The root mean square error (RMSE), relative mean absolute error (RMAE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index (EI), determination coefficient ($R^2$) were used to evaluate the results of calibration and validation. The statistics of RMSE, RMAE, EI, and $R^2$ were 4.66 mm/day, 0.53 mm/day 0.86, and 0.89 for the calibration period and 3.98 mm/day, 0.51 mm/day, 0.83, and 0.84 for the validation period respectively. The statistical parameters indicated that the model provided a reasonable estimation of the runoff at the study watershed. This result was illustrated with a multi-objective optimization for the flow at an observation site within the Baran reservoir watershed.

  • This paper dealt with the influence of experimental error generated inevitably during performing experiments on the granular soil behaviour analysis selecting Lade's Single Work-Hardening constitutive model. Several isotropic compression-expansion tests and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with various confining pressures for Baekma river sands were performed and the values of parameters for the above model were determined using computer program developed for this study based on regression analysis. By finding the range of the upper and lower bound for deviator stress and volumetric strain versus axial strain dependant on the increase and decrease of the standard deviation from mean value of parameters, sensitivities of all the parameters were examined. Practical use of program to determine the parameters and capability to predict the behaviour of granular soil by Lade's Single Work -Hardening model verified.

  • Coarse-grained soils are typical engineering materials commonly used in many civil engineering applications such as structural fills, subgrade and drainage fills for dam, railway and bridge. Various researches have been performed with related to constitutive laws for numerical analysis of such structures. This paper presents a parametric study for a constitutive model for coarse grained materials. The model is a kind of the bounding surface models based on critical state theory. A distinct feature of the model is to capture the response of coarse-grained materials with different void ratios and confining pressures using a single set of model parameters. The model behavior is defined with a set of elastic parameters, critical state parameters, and model-specific parameters. The parametric study was performed for the model-specific parameters. The result of parametric study shows that the model is capable to capture stress-dilatancy behavior and kinematic-hardening under non-associative plastic flow.

  • Finite element model updating is an inverse problem to identify and correct uncertain modeling parameters that leads to better predictions of the dynamic behavior of a target structure. Unlike other inverse problems, the restrictions on selecting parameters all: very high since the updated model should maintains its physical meaning. That is, only the regions with modeling errors should be parameterized. And the variations of the parameters should be kept small while the updated results give acceptable correlations with experimental data. To avoid an ill-conditioned numerical problem, the number of parameters should be kept as small as possible. Thus it is very difficult to select an adequate set of updating parameters which meet all these requirements. In this paper, the importance of updating parameter selection is illustrated through a case study, and an automated procedure to guide the parameter selection is suggested based on simple observations. The effectiveness of the suggested procedure is tested with two example problems, ones is a simulated case study and the other is a real engineering structure.

  • Studies in the evolutionary biology of aging require good estimates of the age-dependent mortality rate coefficient (one of the Gompertz parameters). In this paper we introduce an alternative algorithm for estimating this parameter. And we discuss the sensitivity of the estimates to changes in the other model parameters.

  • The purpose of this study is estimation of daily runoff in the watershed with insufficient hydrological data using tank model. In order to estimate, twentysix watersheds were selected to calibrate tank model parameters that were defined by a trial and error method. Results were correlated with characteristics of watershed. Relationships between the parameters and the watershed characteristics were derived by a multiple regression analysis. The simulation results were in agreement with the observed data.

  • The present study concerns the numerical simulation of a supply airflow control in a variable air volume (VAY) system. A stratified thermal model (multi-zone model) is suggested to predict a local thermal response of an air-conditioned space. The effects of various thermal parameters such as the cooling system capacity, the thermal mass of an air-conditioned space, the time delay of thermal effect, and the building envelope heat transmission are investigated. Further, the influence of control parameters such as the supply air temperature, the PI control factor and the thermostat location on a VAV system is quantitatively delineated. The results obtained show that the previous homogeneous lumped thermal model (single zone model) may overestimate the time taken to the set point temperature. It is also found that there exist the appropriate ranges of the control parameters for the optimal airflow control of the VAV system.

  • Mathematical model of the pollution rate of substation insulators is constructed, taking the model parameters as wind speed, wind direction, typhoon conditions and rainfall in an hourly basis. The main feature of model construction is to distinguish the effect of each parameter by separately analyzing the positive and negative pollution causing factors. Model parameters for the insulators of Karatsu substation, Saga, Japan were estimated and model validation was done using the actual data, in which the pollution deposits on the insulators were measured using pilot insulator and 'salt meter'. The proposed model of the pollution rate [mg/cm$^{2}$/hr] enables the identification of the effective parameters and prediction of the pollution rate so that it helps for the automatic decision making for insulator cleaning or the model can be used as a tool for the substation engineers to make precautionary measures.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of steel towers has become a hot research topic. From the literature, it is impractical and impossible to develop a "general" method that can detect all kinds of damages for all types of structures. A practical method should make use of the characteristics of the type of structures and the kind of damages. This paper reports a feasibility study on the use of measured modal parameters for the detection of damaged braces of tower structures following the Bayesian probabilistic approach. A substructure-based structural model-updating scheme, which groups different parts of the target structure systematically and is specially designed for tower structures, is developed to identify the stiffness distributions of the target structure under the undamaged and possibly damaged conditions. By comparing the identified stiffness distributions, the damage locations and the corresponding damage extents can be detected. By following the Bayesian theory, the probability model of the uncertain parameters is derived. The most probable model of the steel tower can be obtained by maximizing the probability density function (PDF) of the model parameters. Experimental case studies were employed to verify the proposed method. The contributions of this paper are not only on the proposal of the substructure-based Bayesian model updating method but also on the verification of the proposed methodology through measured data from a scale model of transmission tower under laboratory conditions.

  • This study has been carried out as a basic course for the analysis of foundation deformations based on the Cap model using the finite element methods. Material parameters should firstly be determined in order to use the Cap model for numerical solution. Associated with the fact described above, a method determining the soil parameters is suggested using algorithm for numerical ana])isis from raw truly triaxial compression laboratory test data of Pueblo.Colorado sand by Zaman, et at. (1982) More specifically, the change of soil parameters Is thoroughly examined by weighting the data obtained from CTC and RTE tests, respectively. The main results obtained are as follows; 1. The obtained values of parameters (E, V and 2) are same irrespective of data obtained from various kind of tests. 2. The values of the other parameters are dependent on data used. 3. The determination of parameters is little affected by the weighting factor.
