This paper presents a sliding mode controller based on Ackermann's formula and applies it to stabilizing a two-wheeled mobile inverted pendulum in equilibrium. The mobile inverted pendulum is a system with an inverted pendulum on a mobile cart. The dynamic modeling of the mobile inverted pendulum was established under the assumptions of a cart with no slip and a pendulum with only planar motion. The proposed sliding mode controller was based upon a class of nonlinear systems whose nonlinear part of the modeling can be linearly parameterized. The sliding surface was obtained in an explicit form using Ackermann's formula, and then a control law was designed from reachability conditions and made the sliding surface attractive to the equilibrium state of the mobile inverted pendulum. The proposed controller was implemented in a Microchip PIC16F877 micro-controller. The developed overall control system is described. The simulation and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the modeling and controller.
Every year, many people are severely injured or lose their lives in accidents such as fire, chemical spill, public pandemonium, school shooting, and workplace violence. Research indicates that the fate of people in an emergency situation involving one or more hazards depends not only on the design of the space (e.g., residential building, industrial facility, shopping mall, sports stadium, school, concert hall) in which the incident occurs, but also on a host of other factors including but not limited to (a) occupants' characteristics, (b) level of familiarity with and cognition of the surroundings, and (c) effectiveness of hazard intervention systems. In this paper, we present EVAQ, a simulation framework for modeling large crowd evacuation by taking into account occupants' behaviors and interactions during an emergency. In particular, human's personal (i.e., age, gender, disability) and interpersonal (i.e., group behavior and interactions) attributes are parameterized in a hazard-impacted environment. In addition, different hazard types (e.g., fire, lone wolf attacker) and propagation patterns, as well as intervention schemes (simulating building repellent systems, firefighters, law enforcement) are modeled. Next, the application of EVAQ to crowd egress planning in an airport terminal under human attack, and a shopping mall in fire emergency are presented and results are discussed. Finally, a validation test is performed using real world data from a past building fire incident to assess the reliability and integrity of EVAQ in comparison with existing evacuation modeling tools.
Garment modeling and simulation is now one of the important elements in broad range of digital contents. Though there have been recent products on garment simulation, general users do not know well enough how to design a virtual costume that meets some requirements about its specific clothing pattern. In particular, Hanbok - the Korean traditional costume - has many different characteristics against western ones in the aspect of its pattern design and of draping. This paper presents a knowledge-driven approach for virtual Hanbok modeling without knowing how to make real Hanbok. First, parameterized knowledge for several fabric types art solicited using visual similarity assessment from simulated and real cloth. Secondly, based on the analysis of designer's knowledge, we defined multi-level adjustment processes of Hanbok measurements with regard to body shape features for different virtual actors. An experimental system is developed as the form of a Maya plug-in and the result shows the applicability of the proposed method.

Finite element model updating is an inverse problem to identify and correct uncertain modeling parameters that leads to better predictions of the dynamic behavior of a target structure. Unlike other inverse problems, the restrictions on selecting parameters all: very high since the updated model should maintains its physical meaning. That is, only the regions with modeling errors should be parameterized. And the variations of the parameters should be kept small while the updated results give acceptable correlations with experimental data. To avoid an ill-conditioned numerical problem, the number of parameters should be kept as small as possible. Thus it is very difficult to select an adequate set of updating parameters which meet all these requirements. In this paper, the importance of updating parameter selection is illustrated through a case study, and an automated procedure to guide the parameter selection is suggested based on simple observations. The effectiveness of the suggested procedure is tested with two example problems, ones is a simulated case study and the other is a real engineering structure.

As interest in the metaverse has grown, there has been a demand for avatars that can represent individual users. Consequently, research has been conducted to reduce the time and cost required for the current 3D human modeling process. However, the recent automatic generation of 3D humans has been focused on creating avatars with a realistic human form. Furthermore, the existing methods have limitations in generating avatars with imbalanced or unrealistic body shapes, and their utilization is limited due to the absence of datasets. Therefore, this paper proposes a new framework for automatically transforming and creating stylized 3D avatars. Our research presents a definitional approach and methodology for creating non-realistic character avatars, in contrast to previous studies that focused on creating realistic humans. We define a new shape representation parameter and use a deep learning-based method to extract character body information and perform automatic template mesh transformation, thereby obtaining non-realistic or unbalanced human meshes. We present the resulting outputs visually, conducting user evaluations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Our approach provides an automatic mesh transformation method tailored to the growing demand for avatars of various body types and extends the existing method to the 3D cartoon stylized avatar domain.

We propose the framework which directly links shell finite element to the free form surface geometric modeling. For the development of a robust shell element, a first order shear deformable shell theory and partial mixed variational functional are provided. Bubble functions are included in the shape function of displacement to improve the performance of the developed element. The Spline/NURBS is used to generate the general free form of parameterized shell surfaces. The proposed shell finite element model linked with NURBS surface representation provides efficiency for design and analysis. Numerical examples are given in order to assess the accuracy of the performances of the proposed element.

The near-IR spectra of thioacetamide were recorded for the investigation of hydrogen bonding between thioacetamide (TA) and N,N-dimethylalkylamides (DMF, DMA, DMP) in chloroform over the range of 5$^{\circ}C$ to 55$^{\circ}C$. The ${\nu}_{\alpha}$ + amide II combination band has been resolved into contributions from monomeric TA, 1:1 hydrogen bonded complex and 1:2 complex by the parameterized matrix modeling method. The association constants ($K_c$) of the complex have been obtained at various temperatures and used to determine the thermodynamic parameters for the hydrogen bonding by the usual Van't Hoff method. It was found that N,N-dimethylalkylamide forms less stable hydrogen bonded complex with TA in chloroform than in carbon tetrachloride.

It is expected that the transport of compressed video will become a significant part of total network traffic because of the widespread introduction of multimedial services such as VOD(video on demand). Accordingly, VBR(variable bit-rate) encoded video will be widely used, due to its advantages in statistical multiplexing gain and consistent vido quality. Since the transport of video traffic requires larger bandwidth than that of voice and data, the characterization of video source and traffic modeling is very important for the design of proper resource allocation scheme in ATM networks. Suitable statistical source models are also required to analyze performance metrics such as packet loss, delay and jitter. In this paper, we analyzed and described on the characterization and traffic modeling of MPEG video sources. The models are broadly classified into two categories; i.e., statistical models and deterministic models. In statistical models, the models are categorized into five groups: AR(autoregressive), Markov, composite Marko and AR, TES, and selfsimilar models. In deterministic models, the models are categorized into $({\sigma},\;{\rho}$, parameterized model, D-BIND, and Empirical Envelopes models. Each model was analyzed for its characteristics along with corresponding advantages and shortcomings, and we made comparisons on the complexity of each model.
This paper proposes a formant synthesis method of Haegeum sounds using cepstral envelope for spectral modeling. Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) is a technique that models time-varying spectra as a combination of sinusoids (the "deterministic" part), and a time-varying filtered noise component (the "stochastic" part). SMS is appropriate for synthesizing sounds of string and wind instruments whose harmonics are evenly distributed over whole frequency band. Formants extracted from cepstral envelope are parameterized for synthesis of sinusoids. A resonator by Impulse Invariant Transform (IIT) is applied to synthesize sinusoids and the results are bandpass filtered to adjust magnitude. The noise is calculated by first generating the sinusoids with formant synthesis, subtracting them from the original sound, and then removing some harmonics remained. Linear interpolation is used to model noise. The synthesized sounds are made by summing sinusoids, which are shown to be similar to the original Haegeum sounds.
