  • This work is concerned with the topology optimization of three-dimensional cooling fins or heat sinks. Motivated by earlier success of the Internal Element Connectivity Method (I-ECP) method in two-dimensional problems, the extension of I-ECP to three-dimensional problems is carried out. The main efforts were made to maintain the numerical trouble-free characteristics of I-ECP for full three-dimensional problems; a serious numerical problem appearing in thermal topology optimization is erroneous temperature undershooting. The effectiveness of the present implementation was checked through the design optimization of three-dimensional fins.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for GBSB (generalized brain-state-in-a-box) based associative memories. Based on the theoretical investigation about the properties of GBSB, we parameterize the solution space utilizing the limited number of parameters sufficient to represent the solution space and appropriate to be searched. Next we formulate the problem of finding a GBSB that can store the given pattern as stable states in the form of constrained optimization problems. Finally, we transform the constrained optimization problem into a SDP(semidefinite program), which can be solved by recently developed interior point methods. The applicability of the proposed method is illustrated via design examples.

  • In this paper, we proposed a mixed H$_{2}$/H$_{\infty}$ optimal controller design method using the parameterization of H$_{2}$ suboptimal controller. The method is based on the minimization of H$_{2}$ performance measure with an H$_{\infty}$-norm constraint. We also derived the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of solution from the decoupled Riccati equations. And the designed controller has state-space representation.n.

  • The objective of this paper is to present the element connectivity parameterization (ECP) fur three dimensional problems. In the ECP method, a continuum structure is viewed as discretized finite elements connected by zero-length elastic links whose stiffness values control the degree of inter-element connectivity. The ECP method can effectively avoid the formation of the low-density unstable elements. These elements appear when the standard element density method is used for geometrical nonlinear problems. In this paper, this ECP method developed fur two-dimensional problems is expanded to the design of three-dimensional geometrical nonlinear structures. Among others, the automatic procedure converting standard finite element models to the models suitable for the ECP approach is developed and applied for optimization problems defined on general three-dimensional design domains.

  • This research proposed feature extraction algorithms as an input of STEP Ap214 data, and feature parameterization process to simplify further design change and maintenance. The procedure starts with suppression of blend faces of an input solid model to generate its simplified model, where both constant and variable-radius blends are considered. Most existing cell decomposition algorithms utilize concave edges, and they usually require complex procedures and computing time in recomposing the cells. The proposed algorithm using reference features, however, was found to be more efficient through testing with a few sample cases. In addition, the algorithm is able to recognize depression features, which is another strong point compared to the existing cell decomposition approaches. The proposed algorithm was implemented on a commercial CAD system and tested with selected industrial product models, along with parameterization of recognized features for further design change.

  • The conventional methods of boundary-conformed 2D surfaces generation usually yield some problems. This paper deals with two boundary-conformed 2D surface generation methods, one conventional approach, the linear Coons method, and a new method, boundary-conformed interpolation. In this new method, unidirectional 2D surface has been generated using some of the geometric properties of the given boundary curves. A method of simultaneous displacement of the interpolated curves from the opposite boundaries has been adopted. The geometric properties considered for displacements include weighted combination of angle bisector and linear displacement vectors at all the data-points of the two opposite generating curves. The algorithm has one adjustable parameter that controls the characteristics of transformation of one set of curves from its parents. This unidirectional process has been extended to bi-directional parameterization by superimposing two sets of unidirectional curves generated from both boundary pairs. Case studies show that this algorithm gives reasonably smooth transformation of the boundaries. This algorithm is more robust than the linear Coons method and capable of resolving the 2D boundary-conformed parameterization problems.

  • Though the standard element density-based topology optimization method has been applied for the optimal design of multiphysics systems, some theoretical problems, such as material interpolation, undershoot temperature prediction, and unstable elements, still remain to be overcome. The objective of this investigation is to present a new topology optimization formulation based on the element connectivity parameterization (ECP) in order to avoid the numerical problems in multiphysics system design and improve optimization results. To show the validity of the proposed approach, the designs of an optimal thermal dissipation and an electro-thermal-compliant actuator were considered.

  • Many applications in mechanical design involve elastic bodies coming into contact under the action of the applied load. The distribution of the contact pressure throughout the contact interface plays an important role in the performance of the contact system. In many applications, it is desirable to minimize the maximum contact pressure or to have an approximately uniform contact pressure distribution. Such requirements can be attained through a proper design of the initial surfaces of the contacting bodies. This problem involves a combination of two disciplines, contact mechanics and shape optimization. Therefore, the objective of the present paper is to develop an integrated procedure capable of evaluating the optimal shape of contacting bodies. The adaptive incremental convex programming method is adopted to solve the contact problem, while the augmented Lagrange multiplier method is used to control the shape optimization procedure. Further, to accommodate the manufacturing requirements, surface parameterization is considered. The proposed procedure is applied to a couple of problems, with different geometry and boundary conditions, to demonstrate the efficiency and versatility of the proposed procedure.

  • The performance dynamics of battery is very sensitive to operating conditions (i.e temperature, load current, and state of charge). A model developed based on certain conditions may perform well under the similar conditions but can not accurately predict the performance for changing conditions. Thus, a generalized model is needed which can accurately emulate the battery dynamic behavior under all conditions. In addition, the components of the model should relate to the physicochemical processes that occur inside the battery. Electrochemical impedance curve shows better visible reflection of the processes inside battery as compared to voltage curve. The model trained for parameterization using neural network has better generalization than simple curve fitting. Thus, this study proposes recurrent neural network based parameterization of the Lithium ion battery model followed by impedance based identification.
