  • An analysis method for obtaining transient response of electromagnetic pulse(EMP) coupled via a slot aperture into a parallel-plate waveguide, is considered. The mixed-potential integral equation(MPIE), in which the vector and scalar potential Green's functions for the unknown equivalent magnetic surface current of the aperture in parallel-plate region are expressed in closed forms derived by use of the improved complex image method, is formulated. When the method of moments(MoM) is used to solve the MPIE, the matrix-fill time is significantly reduced because of closed-form Green's functions. In order to check the validity of the present method, the numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with those obtained by the previous method. Fairly good agreements between them are observed.

  • An edge-located electromagnetic bandgap (EL-EBG) structure using a defected ground structure (DGS) is proposed to suppress resonant modes induced by edge excitation in a two-dimensional planar parallel plate waveguide (PPW). The proposed EL-DGS-EBG PPW significantly mitigates multiple transverse-magnetic (TM) modes in a wideband frequency range corresponding to an EBG stopband. To verify the wideband suppression, test vehicles of a conventional PPW, a PPW with a mushroom-type EBG structure, and an EL-DGS-EBG PPW are fabricated using a commercial process involving printed circuit boards (PCBs). Measurements of the input impedances show that multiple resonant modes of the previous PPWs are significantly excited through an input port located at a PPW edge. In contrast, resonant modes in the EL-DGS-EBG PPW are substantially suppressed over the frequency range of 0.5 GHz to 2 GHz. In addition, we have experimentally demonstrated that the EL-DGS-EBG PPW reduces the radiated emission from -24 dB to -44 dB as compared to the conventional PPW.

  • The TE-mode characteristics of scattering and reception by a flanged parallel-plate waveguide are examined. The technique of the Fourier transform is used to represent the scattered fields in the spectral domain. The simultaneous equations for the transmitted field coefficients are solved to obtain the solution in an asymptotic series form. The numerical computations are performed to illustrate the behaviors of the scattered field and the transmission coefficients versus the aperture size.

  • Scattering solutions of an H-plane T-junction in a parallel-plate waveguide are theoretically investigated. The iterative procedure and Green's function relation are used to obtain the iterative equations for the $E_{z}$ field modal coefficients, thus resulting in matrix solutions. The scattering characteristics of reflection and transmission powers are presented and compared with other existing results.s.

  • An analysis method of electromagnetic coupling through an arbitrarily shaped aperture on the upper wall of parallel-plate waveguide, when excited by an electromagnetic plane wave from outside, is considered. The mixed-potential integral equation, in which Green's functions are expressed in a computationally efficient closed form by using the Prony's method and the Sommerfeld identity, is formulated. Expanding the unknown equivalent magnetic surface current in terms of two-dimensional rooftop-type basis functions and choosing razor testing, the integral equation is reduced to a linear algebraic equation, which is solved. The results are compared with the previous results. Fairly good agreements between them are observed.

  • In this study, the electromagnetic coupling through a narrow transverse slit in the upper wall of a parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) covered by a dielectric slab with a nearby conducting strip on the slab is considered. Two contrastive coupling phenomena, cavity-type and parasitic-type, observed in the geometry have been distinguished by differences in the resonant strip lengths and offset positions, induced strip current, radiation pattern, frequency bandwidth, and electromagnetic field distributions near the coupling slit.

  • The non-uniform leaky wave structure of the slits in a parallel-plate waveguide is analyzed from the viewpoints of transmitting(receiving) leaky wave antenna and grating coupler. Period and slit width are simultaneously varied along the leaky wave structure to construct the leaky wave structure with a specific distribution of complex propagation constant. Some results for the equivalent magnetic current distributions over the slits and the radiation characteristics of the leaky wave structure with various source(equivalent magnetic current) distributions such as Gaussian, uniform, cosine, cosine-squared, and Taylor distributions are given and compared with each other.

  • In this paper we presented the detection of the explosive material RDX using a parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) THz time domain spectroscopy (TDS). Normally the explosive materials have been characterized through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Until now, most of all THz spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples where disorder effects contribute to line broadening such that individual resonances merge into relatively broad absorption features. In order to avoid such disadvantages we used the technique of PPWG THz-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of explosive material RDX. The PPWG THz-TDS used in this work well established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. The explosive material was analyzed as powder layers in $112{\mu}m$ gap of metal PPWG. The thin later mass was estimated to be about $700{\mu}g$. Finally, we showed spectra of explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 THz measured using PPWG THz-TDS.

  • Periodically perforated slot structure in the upper wall of the parallel plate waveguide is analyzed with main interest focusing on the diffraction Properties. The Periodic slot array is of infinite extent in one direction and of finite extent in the other direction. Various numerical results for reflection from the slotted section and transmission beyond the slotted section, and the radiation through the slotted section into the upper half space are presented with the height of feeding parallel plate waveguide, single slot size, and the periodicity between slots as parameters. This study is thought to be helpful to the design of the ventilation hole in the TFT-LCD and PDP.

  • We present experimental demonstrations of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures for the wideband suppression of radiated emissions from a power bus in high-speed printed circuit boards (PCBs). In most of the PCB designs, a parallel plate waveguide (PPW) structure is employed for a power bus. This structure significantly produces the wideband-radiated emissions resulting from parallel plate modes. To suppress the parallel plate modes in the wideband frequency range, the power buses based on the electromagnetic bandgap structure with a defected ground structure (DGS) are presented. DGSs are applied to a metal plane that is connected to a rectangular EBG patch by using a via structure. The use of the DGS increases the characteristic impedance value of a unit cell, thereby substantially improving the suppression bandwidth of the radiated emissions. It is experimentally demonstrated that the DGS-EBG structure significantly mitigates the radiated emissions over the frequency range of 0.5 GHz to 2 GHz as compared to the PPW.
