We investigated fatigue crack growth behavior in laser-welded sheet metal caused by a single applied overload The fatigue specimens were made using butt jointed cold rolled sheet metal that was welded with a $CO_2$ laser, The effects of the specimen thickness and overload ratio were determined from fatigue crack propagation tests, These tests were performed in such a way that the fatigue loading was aligned parallel to the weld line while the crack propagated perpendicular to the weld line, Overload ratios of 1.0, 1.5, and 2. 0 were applied near the tip of the fatigue crack at points located 6, 4, and 2 mm from the weld line. The specimens were either 0.9 or 2.0 mm thick. The size of the plastic zone at the crack tip due to the single applied overload was also determined using finite element analysis.
The plane crack-contact problem for an infinite elastic layer with two symmetric rectangular rigid stamps on its upper and lower surfaces is considered. The elastic layer having an internal crack parallel to its surfaces is subjected to two concentrated loads p on its upper and lower surfaces trough the rigid rectangular stamps and a pair of uniform compressive stress $p_0$ along the crack surface. It is assumed that the contact between the elastic layer and the rigid stamps is frictionless and the effect of the gravity force is neglected. The problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations in which the derivative of the crack surface displacement and the contact pressures are unknown functions. The system of singular integral equations is solved numerically by making use of an appropriate Gauss-Chebyshev integration formula. Numerical results for stress-intensity factor, critical load factor, $\mathcal{Q}_c$, causing initial closure of the crack tip, the crack surface displacements and the contact stress distribution are presented and shown graphically for various dimensionless quantities.

This paper is about unstable behavior in concrete during the localized deformation and the crack growths in concrete. By modeling the strain localization phenomenon of concrete, the stability condition of the localization is obtained and analyzed. And the stability and bifurcation condition of crack growths in two parallel cracks under different loading conditions are derived and discussed.

The fracture toughness of a hot rolled 100 mm thick SS41 steel plate was investigated for various crack ratios and thichnesses using the method of J-integral. The experiments were performed on an MTS machine and the crack initiation point was detected by using an electricl impedance method. The J-integral computed at the initiation point of the slow stable crack growth was almost constant within the range of crack ratios tested. The fracture toughness thus obtained was $J_{1c}/=27.0kgf/mm$ for specimens having fracture plane parallel to the rolling direction and 35.5kgf/mm for those perpendicular to the rolling direction. The J- integral computed at maximum load point was found to be unsuitable for fracture toughness determination, becaese of large variation depending on the crack ratio and thickness. It was also found that the slow stable crack growth increases as the thickness and/or crack ration of the specimen decrease.
A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. The asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. The dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form related to the stress intensity factor.

In this study, we investigated fatigue crack growth behavior of laser welded sheet metal due to a single overload. Fatigue specimens were made using butt joint of cold rolled sheet metal that was welded by $CO_2$ laser. The fatigue crack propagation tests were performed in such a way that fatigue loading was parallel to the weld line while crack propagation was perpendicular to the weld line. Single overload was applied when fatigue crack tip was arrived near the weld line. The distances between the crack tip and the weld line at which a single overload was applied were 6, 4 and 2mm. The effect of specimen thickness and overload ratio on the fatigue behavior was determined. The plastic zone size of crack tip due to the single overload was determined from the finite element analysis. For investigating fatigue crack growth behavior, we used different thickness specimen 0.9mm and 2.0mm, and variable overload ratio applied fatigue crack propagation test. Also we used finite element analysis for investigating the plastic zone size of crack tip when single overload applied
Crack on concrete surface allows more rapid penetration of chlorides. Crack width and depth are dominant parameters for chloride behavior, however their effects on chloride penetration are difficult to quantify. In the present work, the previous anisotropic (1-D) model on chloride diffusion in concrete with single crack is improved considering crack shape and roughness. In the previous model, parallel-piped shape was adopted for crack shape in steady-state condition. The previous model with single crack is improved considering wedge shape of crack profile and roughness. For verifying the proposed model, concrete samples for nuclear power plant are prepared and various crack widths are induced 0.0 to 1.2 mm. The chloride diffusion coefficients in steady-state condition are evaluated and compared with simulation results. The proposed model which can handle crack shape and roughness factor is evaluated to decrease chloride diffusion and can provide more reasonable results due to reduced area of crack profile. The roughness effect on diffusion is evaluated to be 10-20% of reduction in chloride diffusion.
Crossing (X-type) flaws are commonly encountered in rock mass. However, the crack coalescence and failure mechanisms of rock mass with X-type flaws remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the compressive failure process of rock-like specimens containing two X-type flaws aligned in the loading direction. For comparison purposes, compressive failure behavior of specimens containing two aligned single flaws is also studied. By examining the crack coalescence behavior, two characteristics for the aligned X-type flaws under uniaxial compression are revealed. The flaws tend to coalesce by cracks emanating from flaw tips along a potential path that is parallel to the maximum compressive stress direction. The flaws are more likely to coalesce along the coalescence path linked by flaw tips with greater maximum circumferential stress if there are several potential coalescence paths almost parallel to the maximum compressive stress direction. In addition, we find that some of the specimens containing two aligned X-type flaws exhibit higher strengths than that of the specimens containing two single parallel flaws. The two underlying reasons that may influence the strengths of specimens containing two aligned X-type flaws are the values of flaw tips maximum circumferential stresses and maximum shear stresses, as well as the shear crack propagation tendencies of some secondary flaws. The research reported here provides increased understanding of the fundamental nature of rock/rock-like material failure in uniaxial compression.

A large number of concrete structures are built and used around the world. To ensure their safe and continuous use, these structures require constant inspection and maintenance. While man-powered inspection and maintenance techniques are efficient, they can only provide intermittent status checks at the time of on-site inspection. Therefore, there is a growing need for a system that can continuously monitor the condition of the structure. A study was conducted to detect cracks and damage by installing a conductive coating on the surface of a concrete structure. A parallel resistance pattern that can monitor the occurrence and progression of cracks was developed by reflecting the structural characteristics of concrete structure. An empirical study was conducted to veryfy the application of the proposed method. The crack detection pattern was installed on the reinforced concrete beams, and the crack monitoring method was verified through applying a load on the beams.

This study is to inspect the influence of the initial residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior after the distribution of the initial residual stress is measured when the crack is growing from the compressive residual stress field. Also, the tensile residual stress field. Also, the influence of the variation of residual stress distribution on fatigue crack growth behavior at the crack tip is studied when the initial crack occurs on weld metal, bead interface and HAZ (Heat Affected Zone), respectively. For this purpose, CT-type specimen that crack parallel to the welding bead were manufactured by butt welding on the Al. Alloy 1100-O plate.
