Analytical investigation of the fracture of inhomogeneous beam with two parallel lengthwise cracks is performed. The thickness of the beam varies continuously along the beam length. The beam is loaded in three-point bending. Two beam configurations with different lengths of the cracks are analyzed. The two cracks are located arbitrary along the thickness of the beam. Solutions to the strain energy release rate are derived assuming that the material has non-linear elastic mechanical behavior. Besides, the beam exhibits continuous material inhomogeneity along its thickness. The balance of the energy is analyzed in order to derive the strain energy release rate. Verifications of the solutions are carried-out by considering the complementary strain energy stored in the beam configurations. The influence of the continuous variation of the thickness along the beam length on the lengthwise fracture behavior is investigated. The dependence of the lengthwise fracture on the lengths of the two parallel cracks is also studied.
An X-ray diffractometer which has various X-ray optics can give qualitative and quantitative information for a sample using a nondestructive analysis method. A parallel beam optic passes the parallel beam and removes divergent beam generated from an X-ray tube. The parallel beam optic used in the X-ray diffractometer was fabricated by wire cut and grading of stainless steel plates and was evaluated its performance using an X-ray imaging system. The measured parallelization of 6.6 mrad for the fabricated the parallel beam optic was a very close to the expected value of 6 mrad. An X-ray imaging technique for evaluating the parallel beam optics can estimate parallelization for each plate and can be used to other X-ray optics.
A true three-dimensional cone-beam reconstruction (TTCR) algorithm for the complete sphere geometry is derived, which is applicable to the direct volume image reconstruction from 2-D cone-beam projections. The algorithm is based on the modified filtered backprojection technique which uses a set of 2-D space-invariant filters and is derived from the previously developed parallel-beam true three-dimensional reconstruction(TTR) algorithm. The proposed algorithm proved to be superior in spatial resolution compared with the parallel-beam TTR algorithm.

Monochromatic x-ray CT has several advantages over conventional CT, which utilizes bremsstrahlung white x-rays from an x-ray tube. There are several methods to produce such monochromatic x-rays. The most popular one is crystal diffraction monochromatization, which has been commonly used because of the fact that the energy spread is very narrow and the energy can be changed continuously. The alternative method is the use of fluorescent x-ray, which has several advantages such as large beam size and fast energy change. We have developed a parallel-beam and a fan-beam monochromatic x-ray CT, and compared some characteristics such as accuracy of CT numbers between those systems. The fan beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by irradiating target materials by incident white x-rays from a bending magnet beam line NE5 in 6.5 GeV Accumulation Ring at Tukuba. The parallel beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by using a silicon double crystal monochromator at the bending magnet beam line BL-20BM in Spring-8. A Cadmium telluride (CdTe) 256 channel array detector with 512mm sensitive width capable of operating at room temperature was used in the photon counting mode. A cylindrical phantom containing eight concentrations of gadolinium was used for the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system, while a phantom containing acetone, ethanol, acrylic and water was used for the parallel monochromatic x-ray CT system. The linear attenuation coefficients obtained from CT numbers of those monochromatic x-ray CT images were compared with theoretical values. They showed a good agreement within 3%. It was found that the quantitative measurement can be possible by using the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system as well as a parallel beam monochromatic X-ray CT system.

In this study, we described the design of a three-axis force/torque sensor for measuring the force and torque in a lower-limb rehabilitation robot. The three-axis force/torque sensor is composed of Fx force sensor, Fz force sensor and Tz torque sensor. The sensing element for Fx force sensor and Tz torque sensor is used in a two-step parallel plate beam, and that of Fz force sensor is used in a parallel plate beam. The rated loads of Fx force sensor, Tz torque sensor and Fz force sensor are 300 N, 15 N m and 100 N, respectively. The three-axis force/torque sensor was designed using the finite element method, and manufactured using strain-gauges. The three-axis force sensor was further characterized. As a result, the interference error of the three-axis force/torque sensor was < 1.24%, the repeatability error of each sensor was < 0.03%, and the non-linearity was < 0.02%.
The filtered back projection in the image reconstruction algorithms for the clinic computed tomography system has been widely used. Noise of the reconstructed image was examined under the input noise for parallel and fan beam geometries. The reconstruction images of $512{\times}512$ size were carried out under 360 and 720 projection by the Visual C++ for parallel beam and fan beam, respectively, and those agreed with the original Shepp-Logan head phantom very much. Noise was generated because of intrinsic restriction (finite number of projections) for the image reconstruction algorithm, filtered back projection, when no input noise was applied. Because the result noise was rapidly increased under 0.5% input noise ratio, technologies for reducing noise in CT system and image processing is important.
Two active/passive vibration dampers were designed to control a cantilever beam first mode of vibration. The active element was a piezoelectric polymer, polyvinlidene fluoride (PVDF). The passive damping was provided by the application of a viscoelastic layer on the surface of the steel beam. Two substantially different damper configurations were designed and tested. One damper consisted of a piezoelectric actuator bonded to one face of the beam, with a viscoelastic layer applied to the other surface of the beam. The second one was composed of a layer viscoeastic layer with one surface bonded to the beam, and with other being constrained by nine piezoelectric actuators connected in parallel. A control law based on the sign of the angular velocity of the cantilever beam was implemented to control the beam first mode of vibration. The piezoelectric sensor output was digitally differentiated to obtain the transverse linear velocity, and its sign was used in the control algorith. Two dampers provided the system a damping increase of a factor of four for the first damper and three for the second damper. Both dampers were found to work well at low levels of vibration, suggesting that they can be used effectively to prevent resonant vibrations in flexible structure from initiating and building up.
Dose compensators have been widely used in radiotherapy fields. But, few reliable verification methods have been reported. We have developed the verification method for the evaluation of the effect of dose compensator using exit beam dose profile. The exit beam dose profiles were measured with and without dose compensator. For this purpose X-Omat V films and lead screened cassettes are used and dose distibutions are compared. Phantom data are collected using CT simulator(Picker, AcQ Sim) and compensator information can be obtained from Render Plan 3-D planning System. Aluminum Compensators are generated by computer controlled milling machine. The real dose distribution in the phantom and the exit beam dose profile can be obtained simultaneously with the films in the phantom and the opposite site of the beam. Dose compensations effects for oblique beam, parallel opposing beam and inhomogeneous human phantom can be obtained using above tools. And we could simate those effects with exit beam dose profile using the method that we have developed in this study.
The neutral beam injection generate ultra-high temperature energy in the tokamak of nuclear fusion. The neutral beam injection make up arc power supply, filament power supply and acceleration & deceleration power supply. The arc power supply has characteristics of low voltage and high current. Arc power supply generate arc through constant output of voltage and current. So this paper proposed suitable buck converter for low voltage and high current. The proposed buck converter used parallel switch because it can be increased capacity and decrease conduction loss. When an arc generated, the neutral beam injection chamber occur high voltage. And it will break output capacitor of buck converter. Therefore the output capacitor was removed in the proposed converter. Thus the proposed converter should be designed for the characteristics of low voltage and high current. Also, the arc power supply should be guaranteed for system stability. The proposed parallel buck converter enables the system stability of the divided low output voltage and high current. The proposed converter with constant output be the most important design of the output inductor. In this paper, designed arc power supply verified operation of system and stability through simulation and prototype. After it is applied to the 288[kW] arc power supply for neutral beam injection.

This paper describes strain distribution analysis of a multiple parallel plate structure for a multi-componenet force and moment sensor. A parallel plate structure which has higher rigidity than a simple beam structure are widely used for multi-component force and moment sensor. The strain distribution in the beams of a parallel plate structure should be accurately calculated to design a high precision multi-component force and moment sensor. We derived equations to calculate the strains for multiple parallel plate structure. It reveals that results from finite element analysis and experiment are in good agreement with results from the derived equations.
