Based on wind tunnel tests, this paper investigates the aerodynamic behavior of a large span canopy roof with elliptical plan and hyperbolic paraboloid shape. The statistics of pressure coefficients and the peak factor distributions are calculated for the top and bottom faces of the roof, and the Gaussian or non-Gaussian characteristics of the pressure time-histories in different areas of the roof are discussed. The cross-correlation of pressures at different positions on the roof, and between the top and bottom faces is also investigated. Combination factors are also evaluated to take into account the extreme values of net loads, relevant to the structural design of canopies.

Muller-Scordelis RC Gabled Hyperbolic Paraboloid (HP) shell is divided by 40 40 mesh and analyzed using a finite element computer program which was developed by Mahamoud and Gupta and migrated to a Cray Y-U 00 at SERI. The results are compared with membrane theory and Muller-Scordelis's results. Comparing with Muller-Scordelis's result it shows that good agreements between two analyses, except a discrepancy in the normal deflections of the crown beam. The behavior of the crown beam is quite sensitive and needs further study. The analysis shows that Gabled HP shells do not behave as the typical shells according to the membrane theory. To design such Gabled HP shells we rather use a finite element analysis which simulates realistically membrane and honing actions of the shells.
A novel antenna with ellipsoid-paraboloid surfaces configuration is designed for matching the incident radial radiation fiber laser distribution for maximum transmission efficiency. The on-axial and off-axial defocus effects on the optical antenna system, resulting in energy loss, are analyzed in detail. Knowledge of the effects of those defocuses on beam divergence, aberration and antenna transmission efficiency is of great importance to the long range communication systems.

The gain variations of paraboloid reflector antenna with an axially and perpendicularly defocused feed are investigated using the Huygens-Fresnel Principle. The theoretical calculations and the experimental for the reflector antenna with an axially defocused feed are compared. Although there were about 3dB difference between two results in a range from focal point to 2.0 wave-length, we could know that it was property approached to theoretical results. However, when the magnitude of defocusing is increased, the differences are also increased because of the influence by a weak received signal and interference of external noises. In addition, it can be shown that gain variations are acutely decreased more in perpendicular defocusing than in axial defocusing in the paraboloid reflector antenna.
The ultimate behavior of a reinforced concrete hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell under uniformly distributed vertical load is investigated using an inelastic, large displacement finite-element program originally developed at North Carolina State University. Unlike with the author's previous study which shows that the saddle shell possesses a tremendous capacity to redistribute the stresses, introducing tension stiffening in the model the cracks developed are no longer through cracks and formed as primarily bending cracks. Even though with small tension stiffening effect, the behavior of the shell is changed markedly from the one without tension stiffening effect. The load-deflection curves are straight and the slope of the curves is quite steep and remains unchanged with varying the tension stiffening parameters. The failure of the shell took place quite suddenly in a cantilever mode initiated by a formation of yield lines in a direction parallel to the support-to-support diagonal. The higher the tension stiffening parameters the higher is the ultimate load. The present study shows that the ultimate behavior of the shell primarily depends on the concrete tensile characteristics, such as tensile strength (before cracking) and the effective tension stiffening (after cracking). As the concrete characteristics would vary over the life of the shell, a degree of uncertainty is involved in deciding a specified ultimate strength of the saddle shell studied. By the present study, however, the overload factors based on ACI 318-95 are larger than unity for all the cases studied except that the tension stiffening parameter is weak by 3 with and without the large displacement effect, which shows that the Lin-Scordelis saddle shell studied here is at least safe.

The roof surface of spatial structures is often damaged or destroyed because of its light weight roof structure and materials. Many of large scale stadiums have roof structure framed with steel truss or stay cable and wrapped or covered with membrane material Teflon, and this membrane material is easily damaged and its loss is quite serious. Through such examples, it was found that the studies on wind proof design of roofs of large space structures were not sufficiently made. This study conducted wind pressure experiment and fluid analysis in order to examine the aerodynamic characteristic of the roof shape of hyperbolic paraboloid spatial structures. Although the biggest minimum peak wind pressure coefficient was shown in the edges of the roof in the wind origin direction, it decreases with the advancement to the longitudinal direction of the roof.

One case of pointwise limit design is performed for a hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell(originally used by the Lin-Scordelis) to check the design strength against a consistent design loads, therefore, to verify the adequacy of current design practice for reinforced concrete shells. The design method which was based on stresses from membrane analysis in conjunction with pointwise limit state design equations shows a good performance, which means that the design method gives a lower bound on the ultimate load. This shows the adequacy of the current practice at least for this saddle shell case studied. To generalize the conclusion many more designs-analyses are performed with different shell configurations.
This paper studies the aerodynamic stability of a tensioned, geometrically nonlinear orthotropic membrane structure with hyperbolic paraboloid in sag direction. Considering flow separation, the wind field around membrane structure is simulated as the superposition of a uniform flow and a continuous vortex layer. By the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics, aerodynamic pressure acting on membrane surface can be determined. And based on the large amplitude theory of membrane and D'Alembert's principle, interaction governing equations of wind-structure are established. Then, under the circumstance of single-mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction governing equations into a system of second-order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the frequency characteristic of the system characteristic equation, the critical velocity of divergence instability is determined. Different parameter analysis shows that the orthotropy, geometrical nonlinearity and scantling of structure is significant for preventing destructive aerodynamic instability in membrane structures. Compared to the model without considering flow separation, it's basically consistent about the divergence instability regularities in the flow separation model.
With the advancements or LEDs and lasers in projection display applications, arc lamps still provide the most cost effective solution to high brightness display systems. When will arc lamps become obsolete, will be of great importance today and tomorrow? Given the fact that traditional elliptical and parabolic reflectors had been around for decades; Wavien's new dual paraboloid reflector (DPR) technology with its unique imaging property enhances various aspects of the arc lamp performance will shed some light to this question. In this talk, various applications that are feasible today and anticipated needs of tomorrow will be presented.
