  • An investigation on the thermal buckling resistance of simply supported FGM beams having parabolic-concave thickness variation and temperature dependent material properties is presented in this paper. An analytical formulation based on the first order beam theory is derived and the governing differential equation of thermal stability is solved numerically using finite difference method. a function of thickness variation is introduced which controls the parabolic variation intensity of the beam thickness without changing its original material volume. The results showed the high importance of taking into account the temperature-dependent material properties in the thermal buckling analysis of such critical beam sections. Different Influencing parametric on the thermal stability are studied which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • This research presents an investigation on the thermal buckling resistance of FGM plates having parabolic-concave thickness variation exposed to uniform and gradient temperature change. An analytical formulation is derived and the governing differential equation of thermal stability is solved numerically using finite difference method. A specific function of thickness variation is introduced where it controls the parabolic variation intensity of the thickness without changing the original material volume. The results indicated that the loss ratio in buckling resistance is the same for any gradient temperature profile. Influencing geometrical and material parameters on the loss ratio in the thermal resistance buckling are investigated which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • The glass thermal forming process provides a high volume, low cost approach to producing aspherical reflectors for x-ray optics. Thin glass sheets are shaped into mirror segments by replicating the mold shape at high temperature. Heating parameters in the glass thermal slumping process are crucial to improve surface quality of the formed glass. In this research, the heating process of a thermal slumping glass sheet on a concave parabolic mold was simulated with the finite-element method (FEM) to investigate the effects of heating rate and soaking temperature. Based on the optimized heating conditions, glass samples 0.5 mm thick were formed in a furnace with a steel concave parabolic mold. The figure errors of the formed glass were measured and discussed in detail. It was found that the formed glass was not fully slumped at the edges, and should be trimmed to achieve better surface deviation. The root-mean-square (RMS) deviation and peak-valley (PV) deviation between formed glass and mold along the axial direction were 2.3 μm and 4.7 μm respectively.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to summarize the historical aspects of parabolic reflector moxa and to suggest the applications of light moxibustion in Korean medicine. Results : Getting a fire by parabolic reflector(concave mirror) is well known because of the Olympic torch lighted with a solar reflector in Greece. From anecdotes or myths for Diocles and Archimedes(third century B.C.) a long history has been chronicled in books and films in western culture. However, it has another history in Asian countries since 2,000 years ago. Some reflectors had a tiny size with 6.5 to 10 cm in diameter, 4 mm to 1 cm thickness, and these mobile handheld devices could make us guess that they have been used for multiple purposes. Bronze reflectors were described in Dongeui-bogam, and excavated from the ancient remains of the Shilla and Koryo dynasties. This common firing device was used as a moxibustion device, one of the acupuncture and moxibustion modalities in traditional Korean medicine. Conclusions : Reflector moxa has been used as a light moxibustion to deliver heat energy to acupuncture points, muscles, and skin along meridians. We present a plausible proposal to improve other phototherapy modalities including reflector moxa in Korean medicine practice.

  • A spherical surface referenced Shack-Hartmann method is studied for inspecting machining accuracy of large concave mirror This method is so strong to the vibration environment for using as an on-machine inspection system during polishing process of large optics comparing with the interferometry. The measuring uncertainty of the system is shown as less than p-v 150 m. On-machine measured surface profile data with this method is used for feed back control of the polishing time or depth to improve the surface profile accuracy of large concave mirror. Also, the spherical surface referenced Shack-Hartmann method is useful for measuring aspheric such as parabolic or hyperbolic surface profile, comparing that the interferomehy needs a special null lens, which is to be a reference and difficult to fabricate.

  • In this paper, we studied a reflector design that can improve the illuminance uniformity when using a xenon flash lamp in the photonic sintering process. To achieve complete sintering of substrates in the irradiated area, the light efficiency and illuminance uniformity were set to target performance. Existing elliptical reflectors or parabolic reflectors make it easy to satisfy the target light efficiency, but have difficulty satisfying the illuminance uniformity. In this paper, a twin-concave feature has been added to the center of the parabolic reflector to satisfy the illuminance uniformity. It was confirmed that the illuminance uniformity of the parabolic reflector with a twin-concave feature was improved, compared to that of the traditional reflector.

  • For protection of the cylinder wall of the ball mill for grinding raw ore. the inner side of the cylinder is covered with rubber liner. The rubber is easily worn down because the rubber relatively soft compared with raw ore. So the rubber liner in the ball mill cylinder must be replaced almost every year and the cost for replacing rubber liner formidable. In this paper, for reducing or excluding the cost of replacing rubber liner the basalt liner is designed. The basalt materials are generally harder than raw ore and the basalt liner in the ball mill does not wear down and so it can be used almost permanently. The concave surfaces are made on the liner of the ball mill and the liner in the cylinder wall plays also the role of raising the steel balls mixed in the raw ore. The section profiles of the concave surface have an important effect on the performance of the ball mill. The deep concave grooves raise the steel balls to high levels and give the large potential energy to the steel balls impacting to the raw ore. But if the concave grooves are too deep. the steel balls raised too high by the concave grooves fly along the parabolic path and reach to the other side of cylinder wall and so the steel balls do not play the roles of grinding the raw ore. The forces acting to a steel ball in a concave groove of the cylinder liner are also analyzed in this paper. The formulas calculating the height and the impact point of the steel ball are introduced and presented. Based to these formulas, the optimum section profiles of the basalt liner are presented.

  • This paper introduces a preliminary work for the design of a mini-dish cluster system for power general ion. Each mini-dish (typically has a 20 to 30cm in diameter) is designed with a simple parabolic profile, concentrating sun light (after the glass glazing cover to avoid dust deposition on the reflector and facilitate cleaning) onto a centrally located small plane(or concave) mirror which is placed on the bottom side of the transparent glass cover. The mirror with a mini-dish concentrator is designed to focus beam radiation onto a focal point before it enters a bundle of optical fibers connected to a remote receiver for power generation different options are considered In designing a mini-dish concentrator to maximize its effectiveness for the collection and use of solar energy.

  • A new moving boundary technique for leap-frog finite difference numerical mode is proposed for the resonable simulation of coastal inundation over discontinuous topography. The new scheme improves the moving boundary technique developed by Imamura(1996). The present scheme is tested using the analytical solution of Thacker(1981) for the case of free oscillation with moving boundary in a parabolic bowl. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted for the flooding over a tidal barrier constructed on a simple concave geometry. A general feature of inundation over a discontinuous topography is well described by the numerical model.
