조절펄스광선조사가 눈물막 지질층 두께 및 안구건조증에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Intense Regulated Pulse Light on Thickness of Tear Film Lipid Layer and Dry Eye Syndrome)

  • 목적: 건성안 환자에서 조절펄스광선조사가 미치는 임상 효과 및 눈물막지질층 두께 변화에 대하여 알아보고자 하였다. 대상과 방법: 건성안에 대한 주관적인 불편감을 호소하는 환자 중 마이봄샘기능부전 소견을 보이며, 눈물막파괴시간이 10초 이하인 25명을 대상으로 후향적 연구를 시행하였다. 모든 대상자에 대한 조절펄스광선조사는 시술 당일, 15일, 45일 총 3회에 걸쳐 시행되었으며, 시술 전후 눈물막파괴시간, 쉬르머검사, 안구표면염색점수, 안구표면질환지수(Ocular Surface Disease Index, OSDI) 및 눈물막 지질층의 두께를 측정하여 비교 분석하였다. 결과: 조절펄스광선조사 시술 후 눈물막파괴시간은 $3.7{\pm}1.2$초에서 $4.4{\pm}2.1$초로 증가되어 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였으며(p=0.03), 쉬르머 검사 및 안구표면염색 점수 결과는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다(p<0.01, p=0.01). OSDI는 $39.5{\pm}17.5$점에서 $30.4{\pm}18.7$점으로 통계적으로 유의한 향상을 보였다(p=0.01). 눈물막지질층 두께는 통계적으로 유의한 변화를 보이지 않았다(p=0.49). 결론: 조절펄스광선조사 시술은 눈물막파괴시간, 쉬르머검사, 안구표면염색점수 및 주관적인 건성안 증상을 개선시키는 효과적인 치료 방법이라 생각된다.

뇌허혈 마우스모델에서 양격산화탕이 뇌 손상 완화에 미치는 효과 (Yangkyuksanhwa-Tang Attenuates Ischemic Brain Injury in a Focal Photothrombosis Stroke Model)

  • 양격산화탕은 9가지의 약재로 구성된 처방으로 한의학적 뇌졸중 치료에 가장 널리 사용되는 처방 중 하나이며, 주로 사상체질이론의 소양인 뇌졸중 치료에 적용된다. 본 연구는 실험동물을 이용한 뇌졸중에 대한 양격산화탕의 효과에 대한 연구가 전무하여, photothrombosis로 유발된 허혈성 마우스모델을 이용하여 양격산화탕의 효과를 살펴 보았다. 동물행동학적 변화와 더불어 뇌손상에 미치는 영향을 뇌경색 용적에 대한 조직학적 검색 및 신경염증과 신생세포에 대한 면역조직화학적 검색으로 살펴 보았다. 동물행동학적 결과로 보아, 양격산화탕은 뇌허혈에 의해 손상된 운동기능, 즉 wire grip과 rotarod test에 의한 운동조정과 균형 능력 등에 대한 기능적 회복을 보였으며, 이는 조직학적 검색으로 관찰된 뇌경색 용적의 축소를 동반하였다. 면역조직화학적 결과를 보면, 양격산화탕은 tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$와 myeloperoxidase 면역반응세포의 수를 현저히 감소시켰다. 이와 반대로 양격산화탕은 glial fibrillary acidic protein와 ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 면역반응세포의 수를 현저히 증가시켰다. 또한 양격산화탕은 Ki67/doublecortin 면역반응세포의 수를 현저히 증가시켰다. 이상의 결과로 보아, 양격산화탕은 항염증, astrocyte와 microglia의 활성화 및 신경세포의 증식을 통해 뇌경색 용적을 감소시키며, 이는 뇌허혈성 운동장애에 대한 완화 효과로 이어 지는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 양격산화탕은 뇌손상에 대한 신경기능적 완화효과를 보여 줌으로서 뇌졸중 환자에 대한 유효한 치료제로 사료된다.

Validation on the Analytical Method of Ginsenosides in Red Ginseng

  • A cross-examination between KT&G Central Research Institute and Guangzhou Institute for Drug Control was carried out in order to select optimum conditions for extraction, separation and determination of ginsenosides in red ginseng and to propose a better method for the quantitative analysis of ginsenosides. The optimum extraction conditions of ginsenosides from red ginseng were as follows: the extraction solvent, $70\%$ methanol; the extraction temperature, $100^{\circ}C;$ the extraction time, 1 hour for once; and the repetition of extraction, twice. The optimum separation conditions of ginsenosides on the SepPak $C_{18}$ cartridge were as follows: the loaded amount, 0.4 g of methanol extract; the washing solvents, distilled water of 25 ml at first and then $30\%$ methanol of 25 ml; the elution solvent, $90\%$ methanol of 5 ml. The optimum HPLC conditions for the determination of ginsenosides were as follows: column, Lichrosorb $NH_2(25{\times}0.4cm,$ 5${\mu}m$, Merck Co.); mobile phase, a mixture of acetonitrile/water/isopropanol (80/5/15) and acetonitrile/water/isopropanol (80/20/15) with gradient system; and the detector, ELSD. On the basis of the optimum conditions a method for the quantitative analysis of ginsenosides were proposed and another cross-examination was carried out for the validation of the selected analytical method conditions. The coefficient of variances (CVs) on the contents of ginsenoside-$Rg_{1}$, -Re and $-Rb_1$ were lower than $3\%$ and the recovery rates of ginsenosides were $89.4\~95.7\%,$ which suggests that the above extraction and separation conditions may be reproducible and reasonable. For the selected HPLC/ELSD conditions, the CVs on the detector responses of ginsenoside-Rg, -Re and $-Rb_1$) were also lower than $3\%$, the regression coefficients for the calibration curves of ginsenosides were higher than 0.99 and two adjacent ginsenoside peaks were well separated, which suggests that the above HPLC/ELSD conditions may be good enough for the determination of ginsenosides.

울릉도, 독도 초종용에서 형태 변이와 지리적 분포 양상 (Morphological variation and aspects of the geographic distribution of Orobanche coerulescens Stephan ex Willd. (Orobanchaceae) on Ulleung-do and Dok-do Islands)

  • 한국내의 초종용은 한반도의 서해, 남해, 동해의 해안가 및 도서지역에 제한적으로 분포한다. 본 연구는 울릉도와 독도를 중심으로 12개 자생지에서 초종용의 종내 형태형질 변이를 관찰하고 지리적 분포 양상을 조사하였다. 그 결과, 외부 형질(줄기, 잎, 포엽, 꽃받침 그리고 화관)에서 털의 유무에 의하여 두 개의 type (G-type, glabrous; P-type, pilose)을 확인하였다. 확인된 두 개의 형태학적 type은 확인된 자생지에서 뚜렷한 지리적 분포 양상을 보여주었다. 한반도와 제주도에는 P-type, 울릉도에는 G-type과 P-type 그리고 독도의 동도에는 G-type만이 관찰되었다. 초종용은 외부 형태 형질에 의하여 서로 다른 두 개의 type이 확인되고 뚜렷한 지리적 분포 양상을 보여주기 때문에, 털이 없어지는 형태적 변이가 단순히 일시적인 우연의 결과물이 아니라 초종용 내에 이주 및 군체 형성의 과정을 동반하는 진화적으로 서로 다른 계통이 있음을 추정할 수 있다. 제한된 지역에서 분포하는 독도의 초종용은 유일하게 G-type 으로 확인되었으며 이는 독도 자생종의 의미와 함께 중요한 식물지리학적 가치를 가지고 있기 때문에 자생지 보전을 위한 노력이 필요하다.

Differences in Clinical Characteristics of Invasive Tracheobronchial Aspergillosis according to the Presence of Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis

  • Background: The association of invasive tracheobronchial aspergillosis (ITBA) with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is not well established. We aimed to compare clinical characteristics between patients who exhibited ITBA with IPA and those who exhibited isolated ITBA (iITBA). Additionally, the usefulness of serum or bronchial galactomannan (GM) tests in diagnosing ITBA was evaluated. Methods: This retrospective single-center case-control study was conducted over a period of 4 years. Fifteen patients were enrolled after confirming the presence of ITBA using bronchoscopy-guided biopsy (iITBA, 7 vs. ITBA+IPA, 8). Clinical characteristics of patients and results obtained from serum or bronchial GM tests were compared between the two groups. Mortality was assessed using data collected from a 6-month follow-up period. Results: The ITBA+IPA group showed a higher prevalence of hematologic malignancy (75% vs. 14%, p=0.029), a greater number of patients with multiple bronchial ulcers (75% vs. 14%, p=0.029), lower platelet counts (63,000/μL vs. 229,000/μL, p<0.001), and a mortality rate which was significantly higher (63% vs. 0%, p=0.026) than the iITBA group. In the ITBA+IPA group, 57% of patients tested positive according to the serum GM assay, whereas in the iITBA group, all patients tested negative (p=0.070). The bronchial GM level was high in both groups, but there was no significant difference between them. Conclusion: Patients with ITBA+IPA had a greater number of hematologic malignancies with lower platelet counts and a poorer prognosis than patients diagnosed with iITBA. Findings obtained from bronchoscopy and bronchial GM tests were more useful in diagnosing ITBA than the serum GM test results.

공간가중 포아송 회귀모형을 이용한 고병원성 조류인플루엔자 발생에 영향을 미치는 결정인자의 공간이질성 분석 (Application of a Geographically Weighted Poisson Regression Analysis to Explore Spatial Varying Relationship Between Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Incidence and Associated Determinants)

  • In South Korea, six large outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have occurred since the first confirmation in 2003 from chickens. For the past 15 years, HPAI outbreaks have become an annual phenomenon throughout the country and has extended to wider regions, across rural and urban environments. An understanding of the spatial epidemiology of HPAI occurrence is essential in assessing and managing the risk of the infection; however, local spatial variations of relationship between HPAI incidences in Korea and related risk factors have rarely been derived. This study examined whether spatial heterogeneity exists in this relationship, using a geographically weighted Poisson regression (GWPR) model. The outcome variable was the number of HPAI-positive farms at 252 Si-Gun-Gu (administrative boundaries in Korea) level notified to government authority during the period from January 2014 to April 2016. This response variable was regressed to a set of sociodemographic and topographic predictors, including the number of wild birds infected with HPAI virus, the number of wintering birds and their species migrated into Korea, the movement frequency of vehicles carrying animals, the volume of manure treated per day, the number of livestock farms, and mean elevation. Both global and local modeling techniques were employed to fit the model. From 2014 to 2016, a total of 403 HPAI-positive farms were reported with high incidence especially in western coastal regions, ranging from 0 to 74. The results of this study show that local model (adjusted R-square = 0.801, AIC = 954.5) has great advantages over corresponding global model (adjusted R-square = 0.408, AIC = 2323.1) in terms of model fitting and performance. The relationship between HPAI incidence in Korea and seven predictors under consideration were significantly spatially non-stationary, contrary to assumptions in the global model. The comparison between global Poisson and GWPR results indicated that a place-specific spatial analysis not only fit the data better, but also provided insights into understanding the non-stationarity of the associations between the HPAI and associated determinants. We demonstrated that an empirically derived GWPR model has the potential to serve as a useful tool for assessing spatially varying characteristics of HPAI incidences for a given local area and predicting the risk area of HPAI occurrence. Considering the prominent burden of HPAI this study provides more insights into spatial targeting of enhanced surveillance and control strategies in high-risk regions against HPAI outbreaks.

해외 천문학 교육 프로그램 개발: 캄보디아 (DEVELOPMENT OF FOREIGN ASTRONOMY EDUCATION PROGRAMS : CAMBODIA)

  • The Korean Astronomical Society (KAS) Education & Public Outreach Committee has provided education services for children and school teachers in Cambodia over the past three years from 2016 to 2018. In the first year, 2016, one KAS member visited Pusat to teach astronomy to about 50 children, and in the following two years of 2017 and 2018, three and six KAS members, respectively, executed education workshops for ~ 20 (per each year) local school teachers in Sisophon. It turned out that it is desirable to include both teaching of astronomical knowledge and making experiments and observations in the education in order for the program to be more effective. Language barrier was the main obstacle in conveying concepts and knowledge, and having a good interpreter was very important. It happens that some languages, such as the Khmer of Cambodia, do not have astronomical terminologies, so that lecturers and even the education participants together are needed to communicate and create appropriate words. Handout hard-copies of the education materials (presentation files, lecture/experiment summaries, terminologies, etc.) are extremely helpful for the participants. Actual performing of assembling and using astronomical telescopes for night sky observations has been lifetime experience for some of the participants, which might promote zeal for knowledge and education. It is hoped that these education services for developing countries like Cambodia can be regularly continued in the future, and further extended to other countries such as Laos and Myanmar.

Search for Faint Quasars at z~5 using Medium-band Observations

  • Cosmic reionization era in the early universe was playing a leading part on making the present universe we know. However, we have not been able to reveal the main contributor to the cosmic reionization to date. Faint quasars have been mentioned as the alternative due to the uncertainty of the faint end slope of the quasars luminosity function. With the availability of the deep (~25mag) images from Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Strategic Program survey, we have tried to find more quasar with low luminosity in the ELAIS-N1 field. Faint quasar candidates were selected from several multi-band color cut criteria based on the track of the simulated quasar at z ~ 5. The Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS) and The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) - Deep Extragalactic Survey (DXS) provide J band information which is used to cover the relatively long wavelength range of quasar spectra. To search the reliable candidates with possible Lyman break, medium-band observation was performed by the SED camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse(SQUEAN) in the McDonald observatory and Seoul National University 4k Camera(SNUCAM) in the Maidanak observatory. Photometric redshifts of the observed candidates were estimated from chi-square minimization. Also, we predicted the importance of the faint quasar to the cosmic reionization from the expected number density of the faint quasar.

SOMANGNET: SMALL TELESCOPE NETWORK OF KOREA

  • Even in an era where 8-meter class telescopes are common, small telescopes are considered very valuable research facilities since they are available for rapid follow-up or long term monitoring observations. To maximize the usefulness of small telescopes in Korea, we established the SomangNet, a network of 0.4-1.0 m class optical telescopes operated by Korean institutions, in 2020. Here, we give an overview of the project, describing the current participating telescopes, its scientific scope and operation mode, and the prospects for future activities. SomangNet currently includes 10 telescopes that are located in Australia, USA, and Chile as well as in Korea. The operation of many of these telescopes currently relies on operators, and we plan to upgrade them for remote or robotic operation. The latest SomangNet science projects include monitoring and follow-up observational studies of galaxies, supernovae, active galactic nuclei, symbiotic stars, solar system objects, neutrino/gravitational-wave sources, and exoplanets.

소설 『토지』 배경지 평사리의 문화산업화와 콘텐츠 변화 방향 연구 (A Study on the Cultural Industrialization and Content Change Direction of Pyeongsari, a Novel 'Toji (Land )' Background Space)

  • 이 논문은 소설 『토지』의 주요 무대이자 작중인물들의 삶에 새겨진 원체험 공간인 평사리의 의미를 진단하고 <토지> 콘텐츠 플랫폼으로서의 평사리의 방향성을 제안한다. 소설 속 가상공간인 평사리는 원작의 배경지에서 출발하여 하동군의 대표 문화 공간으로 현재 자리매김하고 있다. 그런데 이 공간의 방문자들이 자기만의 장소성을 체험하기 위해서는 문화체험형 콘텐츠로 재탄생할 필요가 있다. 원작에서 평사리는 이상적 공동체이자, 수난과 개척이라는 한국 근대사의 축도로 존재한다. 그러므로 이러한 의미를 살려 유교문화, 여성의 노동문화, 무속문화를 보여주는 문화체험공간을 마련하여 방문자들의 체험을 이끌어내야 한다. 아울러, 평사리 재편의 동력이 된 변용작품들과 연계하여 앱을 개발하고, 증강현실을 이용한 교육과 체험 공간을 웹에 마련한다. 디지털과 현실의 이러한 교호작용은 원작이나 변용작품들의 의미를 사유하게 하는 동시에 방문자들이 저만의 장소성을 확보하는데 기여한다. 또한 이를 통해 평사리는 한국문화와 삶의 의미를 사유하는 문화체험 콘텐츠 플랫폼으로의 진화가 가능하다. 이 글은 '의미 있는 장소들의 지리'를 위한 평사리의 공간 기획 방향성을 제언한다는 점에 그 의미가 있다. 또한 문학 작품 원작의 상상 공간이 현실의 공간을 어떻게 재편해 왔는지를 보여줌과 동시에 문학작품의 미디어 콘텐츠화와 문화예술산업 지형 구축에도 시사점이 있다.
