  • Changes of yield and paeoniflorin content according to chemical control and harvest time were investigated. Peonies were harvested after four years from planting. Disease and pest control method was applied normally in first year. From second year to forth year we set two blocks and controlled them differently. In one, peonies were withered early under non-control condition. In the other which was controlled by spraying chemicals four time a year, top part withering was delayed. Harvest was taken four times top part withering was delayed. Harvest was taken four times: Jul. 25, Aug. 25, Sep. 25, and Oct. 25. In non-chemical, at harvest of Jul. 25, paeoniflorin content was highest and dry root weight was 1,126kg/10a which was little less than 1,177kg/10a of Aug. 25. In chemical control, dry root yield of Oct. 25. showed an increase of 33% over that of Jul. But paeoniflorin content in root at Oct. was lower than at Jul. or Aug. For high qualities and harvest yields of peony root, chemical control is necessary to maintain top part to late in Oct.

  • The experiment was conducted to determine pollen morphology of Chinese peony and its germination. The results were obtained as following ; Pollen shpae was usually large ellipse and the pollen germination rate of Eui-seong Peony line was 71% which was lower than that of other Peony lines. In a bud, the pollen began to be observed on $7{\sim}9days$ before flowering and as getting on for flowering time, normal pollen and germination rates were higher. The pollen germination and elongation beganat 30 minutes after incubation on artificial medium and were completed after $2{\sim}3\;hours$. As the storage time went on, the pollen life span was shortened. The germination rate was 51% at 8 days-storage of room temperature. The germination rate was 48% ad 43% at 95 day-storage in $0^{\circ}C$ and $-15^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The experiment was conducted to find causes of rooting failure in divided crown of peony cultivation. The results were as follows : In farmer s fields, damage rate of rooting failure in divided crown of peony was 32% as non-sprouting 5.6%, withering after sprouting 20.7%, and wilting after sprouting 5.7%, repectively. Damage degree in farmer s fields was followed, above 70% by 4%, 41 to 70% by 17%, 11 to 40% by 45% per total field area, respectively. It was caused by rooting failure. Damage rate of rooting failure as affected by different planting time was 18.2% for planting in autumn, 42.9% for planting in spring, and damage in divided crown was higher than in seedling. As periods to planting were prolonged, growth and yield were larger poorly, treatment with seminal-root sterilization and soil insecticide showed good growth and rooting but untreated control was very poor. Main cause of rooting failure in divided crown of peony was disease, Cylindrocarpon sp. and low quality of seeds.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the preventive effects of Paeoniae Radix Extract(PRE) against the acute hepatotoxicity-inducing lipopolysaccharide(LPS) in the liver. PRE of 100 mg/kg concentration was intraperitoneally administered into rats at dose of 1.5 ml/kg for 20 days. On day 21, 5 mg/kg of LPS dissolved in saline was injected 4 hours before anesthetization. We examined the levels of glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) in serum of rats, superoxide dismutase(SOD) in mitochondrial fractions, and malondialdehyde(MDA), catalase(CAT), glutathione peroxidase(GPx) in liver homogenates. LPS-treatment markedly increased the levels of GOT, GPT, LDH and MDA, and significantly decreased those of SOD, CAT and GPx. But PRE-pretreatment decreased the levels of GOT, GPT, LDH and MDA, by 59.7%, 43.6%, 59.6% and 63.5%, respectively and increased those of SOD, CAT and GPx, by 85.5%, 57.8% and 62.9%, respectively. These results showed that the PRE had the preventive effects against the acute hepatotoxicity-inducing LPS in the liver.

  • The appropriate drying method in medicinal compounds and color of peony root was that predrying at briquet fire $(40{\sim}60^{\circ}C)$ for 6 hours or more, and then hot air drying at $40^{\circ}C$ during 60 hours. But this method needs too much time in drying. And the method that drying at $40^{\sim}C$ with hot air drying has bad result in color. In case Peony was seld by cutting product, before cutting, the Peony root was retted for 30 min. and sealed for 12 hrs. is good for drying time, Peoniflorin content and commodity.

  • Objectives To check marker content for appropriate quality control of Woohwangchungsimwon sterilized to ensure microbiological safety and to observe antioxidant activity for any changes in efficacy. Methods To measure any effects of sterilization on the effective compounds, 8 ingredients of Woohwangchungsimwon were screened for any changes in marker content using HPLC-DAD. Using the colorimetric method on the microplate reader any changes in total phenolic compound and flavonoid levels were observed. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP. Results Of the ingredients of Woohwangchungsimwon, 8 were subject to quantitative analysis before and after sterilization. 21.6 mg and 1.93 mg of Glycyrrhizin was found in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer pre and post sterilization, respectively. Decursin found in Angelica gigas Nakai increased from 0.16 mg to 0.29 mg after sterilization. Bilirubin found in Gallstone of Bostaurusvar. domesticus increased from 0.24 mg to 0.33 mg. Cinnamic acid found in Cinnamomum cassia Blume increased from 0.02 mg to 0.05 mg. Ginsenoside Rb1 found in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer decreased from 0.02 mg to 0.14 mg. Paeoniflorin found in Paeonia lactiflora Pallas increased from 1.05 mg to 1.13 mg. Amygdalin found in Armeniacae Amarum Semen increased from 2.68 mg to 2.83 mg. L-muscone found in Musk increased from 0.63 mg to 0.76 mg. As for total phenolic compound and total flavonoid content, there was a 1.22 and 4.15-fold increase. DPPH and ABTS increased by 20.45% and 20.69%, respectively. FRAP activity was 2.78 times more active post stabilization. Conclusions This study confirmed that high temperature high pressure steam sterilization, a method used to ensure microbiological safety of Woohwangchungsimwon, does not affect marker content; in other words, does not affect quality of the Woohwangchungsimwon. It could also be seen that total phenolic compound and flavonoid content increased after sterilization. An antioxidant activity test showed that there was significantly increased activity of antioxidants.

  • This study was carried out to select proper intercrops in peony cultivation because peony is damaged easily by disease and cannot make proper income with it's single crop system, so it needs rational intercropping system to raise it's productivity and income. The results of this study are as follows. The kinds of soil nematodes were Meloidogyne sp, Pratyienchus sp, Aphelenchoides sp, Ditylenchus sp, Xiphinema sp, and damaging dominant nematode was Meloidogyne sp. The density of Meloidogyne sp wa suppressed remarkably in the combination of peony+sesame, and peony + job's tears. This study shows that sesame and job's tear were most resistant crops to the IvIeloidogyne sp. The quanity of herbaceous peony was the best in the combination of peony+red pepper. The results of income analysis per lOa for three years shows next conclusion. Peony+red pepper combination and peony+ sesame combination were most effective when it's compared with single cropping of peony (1,490 thousand won). But red pepper was damaged easily by soil nematode, therefore, sesame was the most stable and high yield crop as a intercrop in the cultivation of herbaceous peony.

  • It has been known that Samultang has positive effects on blood circulation and erythrocyte formation. Samultang was composed of four ingredients, Angelica gigas Nikai, Rahmanniae Radix Preparata, Paeonia lactiflora Pallas, and Cnidium officinale Makino. Five types of bread were prepared by replacing water with Samultang for dough proportionally. Control (C) did not have Samultang and the other four experimental bread contained Samultang: S-I (25% of water was substituted by Samultang), S-II (50% substituted), S-III (75% substituted), and S-IV (100% substituted). Moisture, protein, and ash contents of Samultang were $97.34{\pm}0.11%,\;0.42{\pm}0.04%,\;and\;1.40{\pm}0.16%$, respectively. Replacing water with Samultang decreased pH and increased significantly wet gluten content of the dough. Substitution of Samultang for water incremented redness and yellowness of the dough and bread and increased hardness. It also raised the contents of ash and protein. Although it was not significant, in addition, moisture loss of the bread during storage seemed to be lessened by replacing water with Samultang. However, total volume and specific loaf volume of the bread, baking loss rate, and the other textural characteristics except hardness were not affected by substituting water with Samultang. Due to the above results, sensory evaluation of volume and gumminess of the bread were improved significantly by substituting Samultang for water. The bread replaced 25% of the water with Samultang was ranked as the best by the test of sensory evaluation. These results imply that adding Samultang instead of water to dough for bread might bring positive effects on quality characteristics of the bread without any adverse influences. Therefore, it might be worth developing functional bread using Samultang.
