  • This review study was conducted to recommend the effective use of herbicide mixtures in Korea. The herbicide ingredients by Herbicide Resistancce Action Committee (HRAC) was classified into 23 groupes according to the mode of action (acetyl CoA carboxylase inhibitors, acetolactate synthase, photosystem I and II inhibitors, protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors, carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitors, enolpyruvyl shikimate-3-phosphate synthase inhibitors, glutamine synthetase inhibitors, dihydropteroate synthetase inhibitors, mitosis inhibitors, cellulose inhibitors, oxidative phosphorylation uncouplers, fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis inhibitors, synthetic auxins, auxin transport inhibitors and potential nucleic acid inhibitors or non-descript mode of action). The rice herbicide mixtures registered in Korea were classified based on the guideline of HRAC. Accordingly, such a classification system for resistance management can help to avoid continuous use of the herbicide having the same mode of action in the same field.

  • The herbicide molinate has been detected with high frequency in the main river during the growing season in Korea. To elucidate the exposure of molinate in agricultural environment, the persistence and the degradation characteristics of molinate were investigated in paddy ecosystems. The half-lives of molinate were 4.1 days with soil aquatic system, and 4.2 days in only aquatic system. Initial dissipation rate of molinate in water was greater with soil aquatic system than that of only aquatic system. Photolysis of molinate was occurred about 31.0% of molinate treated in pure water, when irradiated at 5,530 $J/cm^2$ by the xenon lamp, but its hydrolysis was stable. For the accelerated photolysis of molinate in aqueous solution, several photosensitizers were screened, showing that the hydroperoxide($H_2O_2$) and acetone were prominent among the chemical tested. When hydroperoxide and zinkoxide(ZnO) were used as photosensitizer, their photolysis were accelerated greater than 98% and 58% in aqueous solution, respectively. Elution rate of molinate as granular formulations in aqueous system was more than 90% in 30 hour at $35^{\circ}C$. Molinate concentration pattern in paddy water was rapidly decrease from treatment till 7 days in paddy rice field and its half-lives were 3.7 days($Y=1.9258{\times}e^{-0.1865X}$(r=-0.9402)).

  • Field survey on the weed occurrence and the use of herbicides was carried out targeting 214 rice cultivating farmers at Gyeongsangbuk-do. 96.2% of farmers did machine planting in late May and this is 68.0% of total cultivating area. Spring plowing was first with 54.6%, followed by spring-fall and fall plowing with 24.8% and 15.0%, respectively. 75% of the farmers treated herbicide twice. 57.5% of them treated herbicide before transplanting and treated at post-emergence again. In case of only application, 84% of the farmers treated herbicide before transplanting. Twenty-three species were occurred at Gyeongsangbuk-do and Echinochloa spp. was the most dominant with 20.8%, Sagittaria trifolia was second with 10.4%, followed by Monochoria vaginalis and Sagittaria pygmaea with 9.9% and 9.7%, respectively. Sagittaria pygmaea was the most difficult to control followed by Echinochloa spp., M. vaginalis, and S. trifolia.

  • A field case study was performed to investigate optimum cropping technique of direct seeded rice. In addition, an economic analysis was made to see the effect of this method. Field study was performed at a 2.1㏊ paddy field in Kimjae city, Chonbuk province from 1991 to 1999. Various direct seeding method such as dryland seeding, wetland seeding, and no-till wetland seeding were introduced. Optimum cropping techniques such as when and how to manage the rotary till, water supply, herbicide application, and ponding depth were developed for different cropping methods. Based on this study ₩640,000 per ㏊ can be saved by direct seeding due to no nursery cost, and ₩l,220,000 per ㏊ can be saved by no-till and no nursery cost. With further study these cropping techniques including the no-till direct deeding proves to be advantageous these can be adopted for the most of the paddy fields in Korea.

  • In spite water direct seeding cultivation of rice has advantages in terms of laborsaving and cost-down, it demonstrates uneven seedling establishment and difficult weed management. To select an applicable mat for mulching system of water seeded rice, weed occurrence, growth and yield performances of rice, and soil temperature were evaluated in several kinds of biodegradable mulching material. Field studies were conducted at the experimental farm of National Crop Experiment Station in 1999 and 2000. Among the mats tested in 1999, Safer-mat had the greatest effect on inhibiting weed occurrence and Lawn-mat demonstrated the least efficacy of weed control (EWC) value. In Safer-mat treatment, Ludwigia prostrata was the dominant weed species but Echinochloa crus-galli was not observed. Different kinds of mulching material from the mats studied in 1999 were tested in 2000. Biodegradable polyester (PES) coated on the recycled paper for newspaper press (RP) treatments showed similar or higher EWC values than non-mulched broadcast seed rice with 2 times of herbicide application (BC-herbicide) and Safer-mat that was the most effective mat on preventing weed appearance in 1999. Immediately after mat mulching on the surface of paddy soil, five pregerminated rice seeds were manually sown in each 3cm-hole formerly punctured at 30${\times}$14 cm spacing in 2000. All the 3 kinds of mulching material tested in 2000 had better seedling stand than BC-herbicide treatment. Rice yield in PES coated with 10 thickness on RP (PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP) was a little higher than in BC-herbicide treatment but the former produced less panicles in unit land area than the latter. PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP demonstrated a great effect on raising soil surface temperature than non-mulching treatment throughout the period of seedling establishment.

  • The main objectives of this study are to calibrate the RICEWQ model with Korean field data and then analyse the sensitivity of the parameters to identify sensitive parameters. The RICEWQ is widely used to predict pesticide fate in a paddy plot. An experimental paddy plot of 0.2 ha($100{\times}20\;m$) at Seobyeon-dong, Daegu, Korea was selected, and field observations for water and pesticide balance were performed from 4 June to 2 September 2006. The molinate, which is a herbicide widely used for weed control in rice culture, was selected. The RICEWQ model was successfully calibrated both for the water and pesticide mass balance. The calibrated model showed a RMSE of 0.537 cm for ponded water depths and a RMSE of 0.036 mg/L for the molinate concentrations in the ponded water. The most sensitive parameters for molinate concentrations in ponded water were the metabolism degradation rate in water, volatilization coefficient, and release rate for slow release formulation. In contrast, the RICEWQ model was not sensitive to parameters such as hydrolysis degradation rate in water and degradation rate in unsaturated soil.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of benzobicyclon mixtures by using Remote-controlled aerial application (RCAA) to control annual and perennial weeds in rice paddy field. Eight annual weed species including Echinochloa crus-galli L. and three perennial weeds were dominated in the experimental field. Application of benzobicyclon mixtures using RCAA was highly effective to control both annual and perennial weed species. When compared with untreated control, no visual injuries were detected at single and double dosage of benzobicyclon mixtures. Finally, rice yield in the benzobicyclon mixtures was as much as that in the hand weeding. This study indicates that benzobicyclon mixtures using RCAA can be applied to control both annual and perennial weed species in rice paddy field.
