  • In this paper the linearzed stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad thrust bearing are calculated by the perturbation method. The coefficients are obtained for a wide range of pivot positions. The effects of exciting frequency and pad mass on stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated. Critical frequencies due to the tilting motions of the pad are presented and are shown to be strongly influenced by the pivot position and pad mass.

  • In this paper, linearized dynamic characteristics of parallel line pivoted pad thrust bearing (here-inafter refer to PLP thrust bearing) was analyzed by perturbation method with inlet pressure. Inlet pressure and excitation frequency influence dynamic characteristics of PLP thrust bearing at all operating conditions, such as angular pivot position, mass of pad. Therefore, the characteristics have to be analyzed with inlet pressure, excitation frequency, mass of pad and thickness of pad. Otherwise, the analysis may be over or under estimate.

  • A numerical analysis for the gas lubricated flexure-pivot tilting pad journal bearing has been accomplished. The film pressure are obtained by Newton-Raphson method and the dynamic coefficients are evaluated by the pad assembly method. The effects of the pivot position of the pad on the static and dynamic characteristics are presented for three pads journal bearing with LBP. The optimum pivot positions for the static performance is different from that of the dynamic performance.

  • The tilting pad journal bearing has widely used to support high pressure/high rotating turbine rotors owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, fatigue damages in the upper unlcaded pads and the break of locking pins etc. by pad spragging were continuously taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to develope a new bearing model that can prevent bearing damage problem effectively by pad spragging in a tilting pad journal bearing. A new bearing model which has a wedged groove is suggested from the studies of spragging mechanism performed by previously research works. The spragging characteristics of the upper unloaded pad are studied experimentally in order to verify the reliability of a new bearing model. It can be known that the phenomenon of pad spragging nearly does not occur in the new bearing model under the various experimental conditions. And it is observed that any kinds of bearing failures by pad spragging does not detect in the application of actual steam turbines.

  • Effects of the circular and non-circular pad shapes on self-alignment in BGA soldering are predicted using Surface Evolver, and the calculated results are compared with experimental data. While the pad shape has minor effects on self-alignment in the vertical direction, self-alignment in the lateral direction depends on the pad direction and length ratio of the non-circular pad. Larger restoring force is obtained in the minor-axis direction than the major-axis direction, which suggests a possibility of reducing misalignment in the specific direction. The restoring force of the circular pad is between those of the non-circular pad in the major and minor-axis directions. The calculated results of Surface Evolver show reasonably good agreements with experimental data using the shear loading system.

  • Properties of pad are investigated to find the relationship between the chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) results, such as material removal rate and within wafer non-uniformity(WIWNU), and its properties. Polishing pressure is considered as important factors to affect the results, so behavior of ordinary polymer is studied to define the polishing result affecting properties of pad. Experimental setup is devised to identify the behavior of pad and several different pads are used in chemical mechanical polishing experiments to verify the correlations between pad properties and polishing results. The results indicate that the viscoelastic properties of pad had relationships with the polishing results, and shows correlation between suggested properties of pad and polishing result.

고속용 브레이크에서 디스크 패드의 열응력 특성에 관한 연구 (Thermal Stress Characteristics of a Disk Pad in High-Speed Brakes)

  • The thermal characteristics of a disk such as temperature distribution, thermal behaviors and thermal stress during a braking operation has been analyzed for a high-speed brake using the finite element method. The maximum stress for a pad loaded against a disk was occurred at the trailing and leading edges of the disk pad at the underlayer-backplate interface. The FEM results indicate that the thermal characteristics of the spot type pad shows good performance compared with those of the flat type pad. Thus, the spot type pad in brake system may be recommended for the high-speed train system.

  • 본 논문에는 준평형 모델을 사용하는 PAD(propellant actuated device) 시스템의 거동 및 추진제 형상설계에 관하여 기술하였다. 준평형 모델의 검증을 위해 PAD 시스템 시험이 수행되었다. 시험과 해석 결과를 비교하여 상호 경향이 유사함을 확인함으로써 준평형 모델적용치 타당성을 입증하였고, 사용된 시스템의 열손실 및 마찰계수를 얻을 수 있었다. 개발된 설계기법은 향후 PAD 시스템 설계시에 유용하게 사용될 것이다.

  • We studied the characteristics of polishing pad, which can apply STI-CMP process for global planarization of multilevel interconnection structure. Also, we investigated the effects of different sets of polishing pad, such as soft and hard pad. As an experimental result, hard pad showed center-fast type, and soft pad showed edge-fast type. Totally, the defect level has shown little difference, however, the counts of scratch was defected less than 2 on JRlll pad. Through the above results, we can select optimum polishing pad, so we can expect the improvements of throughput and devise yield.
