  • In this paper, we propose the improved energy detector using adaptive thresholds in cognitive radio system, in order to compensate the weak points of the existing energy detector in the distorted communication environment. In addition, by investigating the several parameters we analyze its performance. The numerical results show the proposed method may get the performance gain, when the mobile speed is slow (3 km/h) as well as the false alarm probability is low ($P_f=10^{-1}$).

  • A new device structure has been developed for p-i-n switches. In this structure, the phosphorus-diffused n$^{+}$ layter adjacent to the boron-doped anode is used to short the p$^{+}$ anode-channel(i-region). This change in the anode electrode structure results in a significant improvement in the threshold voltage-to-holding voltage($V_{Th}/V_{h}$) ratio, which is due to the suppression of the hold injection from the anode by the n$^{+}$ layer. The shorted anode p-i-n devices of a 100 .mu.m channel length show an extremely high threshold voltage in the 250~300 V range and a low holding voltage in the 5~9 V range. These features of the device are expected to acdelerate their practical application to power switching circuits.

  • Colostrum deprived, newborn pigs (N=12, $1.64{\pm}0.05kg$) were used to study the renal threshold of carnitine, and effects of emulsified medium-chain triglyceride (MCT, tri-8:0) feeding on kinetics of plasma carnitine and urinary carnitine excretion. An arterial catheter was inserted through an umbilical artery, and a bladder catheter was inserted via the urachus. Piglets were oro-gastrically gavaged with one of six carnitine levels (0, 60, 120, 180, 240, $480{\mu}mol/kg\;W^{0.75}$) with (+MCT) or without medium-chain triglycerides (-MCT) in 0.9% NaCl solution. Blood was sampled into heparinized tubes at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 14, and 20 h after gavage, and urine was collected and pooled into 1 h or 2 h composite samples to determine free- and short-chain carnitine concentrations. Plasma from the 12 newborn piglets before gavage contained $10.6{\pm}1.2{\mu}mol/L$ free carnitine and $7.2{\pm}0.6{\mu}mol/L$ acid-soluble acyl carnitine. The renal threshold for carnitine was similar between the MCT and the +MCT group (42.6 13.1 and $46.4{\pm}2.0{\mu}mol/L$, respectively), but the correlation between plasma free carnitine and urinary excretion was altered. Plasma free carnitine linearly increased with increasing carnitine dosage (-MCT group, $R^2=0.95$, p<0.001; +MCT group, $R^2=0.91$, p<0.001), but was decreased by 50% when medium-chain triglycerides were fed. The peak in plasma free carnitine concentration was depressed by medium-chain triglycerides feeding also. Therefore, the plasma and urinary short-chain/free carnitine ratio of the +MCT group was increased by 100% and 40%, respectively (p<0.01). Feeding of medium-chain triglycerides may delay plasma carnitine elevation via altering the kinetics of absorption. Similarly, the plasma and urinary short-chain/free carnitine ratio were affected by interaction between medium-chain triglycerides and time (p<0.01). The present study suggests that an oral carnitine dose over $480{\mu}mol/kg\;W^{0.75}$ may be needed to reach the free carnitine renal threshold within a short period, especially when provided together with medium-chain triglyceride.

  • Effects of temperature, pH and addition of NaCl and quinine on sweetness and recognition threshold of aspartame were investigated. Changes in flavor of some foods were also studied when aspartame was added. The sweetness of 0.02% aspartame, the equi-sweetness of 4.3% sugar, was organoleptically evaluated by multiple comparison test at variouse range of temperature ($4^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $80^{\circ}C$), pH (3.0, 4.5, 6.0 and 7.5), NaCl (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%) and quinine (0.001, 0.003 and 0.005%). The highest sweetness was obtained at $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 3.0-4.5. Addition of NaCl at 0.5% level showed the highest sweetness which was decreased thereafter. The sweetness was significantly decreased by the addition of quinine. The recognition threshold of aspartame was the lowest at $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 3.0-4.5. Lower in bitterness and higher In ginseng flavor were noted in ginseng tea with aspartame than in that without aspartame. Improved roasted flavor and decreased undesirable odor and taste were resulted in soymilk with the addition of aspartame. The flavors of orange, apple and strawberry were enhanced by aspartame in orange juice, apple juice and strawberry juice, respectively.

  • The optimum autolysis conditions were investigated to prepare yeast autolyzate (extract) using yeast slurry collected from brewery plants. Brewers yeast slurry was washed with caustic soda to eliminate bitter hof substances attached to yeast cell walks. The pH of brewers yeast slurry was adjusted to 9.8 with caustic soda, and centrifuged at 3,000 rpm for 5 min. The supernatant was discarded, and the bottom cake was rehydrated and collected. Bitterness unit (BU) of washed yeast slurry was 24.1 BU, below the threshold value of 25.0. Yeast extract could be obtained from washed brewers yeast slurry at maximum yield up to 38% by autolyzing at pH 6.8 and $53^{\circ}C$ for 20 h.

  • A compact model of a depletion-mode silicon-nanowire (Si-NW) pH sensor is proposed. This drain current model is obtained from the Pao-Sah integral and the continuous charge-based model, which is derived by applying the parabolic potential approximation to the Poisson's equation in the cylindrical coordinate system. The threshold-voltage shift in the drain-current model is obtained by solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the electrolyte. The simulation results obtained from the proposed drain-current model for the Si-NW field-effect transistor (SiNWFET) agree well with those of the three-dimensional (3D) device simulation, and those from the Si-NW pH sensor model also agree with the experimental data.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the effects of X-irradiation on prenatal deaths, i.e., preimplantation deaths, embryonic deaths and fetal deaths, and on external malformations in precompacted preimplantation ddy mice Materials and Methods : Pregnant mice (n=85) obtained by limiting the mating time to from 6 to 9 A.M., were segregated into 11 groups. The first five groups (n=26) were irradiated with X-ray doses of 0.1 0.5, 0.75, 1.5, and 3 Gy, respectively, at 24 h post conception (p.c.) of the preimplantation Period. The second five (n=27) groups were irradiated at the same X-ray doses, respectively, but at 48 h p.c. of the preimplantation period. The last group (n=32) was the control group. The uterine contents were examined on the 18th day of gestation for prenatal deaths and external malformations. Results : 1) A statistically significant increase in preimplantation deaths with increasing dose was observed in the experimental groups irradiated at 24 h p.c. and in the groups irradiated at 48 h p.c., as compared to the control group. The threshold dose was close to 0.05 Gy and 0.075 Gy for the irradiations at 24 h p.c. and 48 h p.c. respectively. 2) A statistically significant increase in embryonic deaths with increasing dose was observed in all irradiation groups, except the group irradiated with a dose of 0.1 Gy at 48 h p.c.. 3) No fetal deaths were found in any experimental group. 4) In the experimental groups irradiated at 24 h p.c. anomalies increased with statistical significance, as compared with the control group : 2 exencephalies, 2 open eyelids, 3 anophthalmias, 2 cleft Palates, 2 gastroschisis, 1 abdominal wall defect. 1 leg defect, and 2 short tail anomalies: the threshold dose for external malformations was close to 0.2 Gy at 24 h p.c.. In the groups irradiated at 48 h p.c., 1 open eyelid and 2 short tail anomalies were observed, but there was no statistical significance in those malformations. Conclusion : The results of this study reveal that X-irradiation of precompacted preimplantation ddy mice causes not only preimplantation deaths and embryonic deaths but also external malformations. In addition, external malformations were observed in our experiments at diagnostic doses, including 0.1 and 0.5 Gy. For this reason, we recommend that irradiation should be avoided during the preimplantation period by applying Rugh's 10-day rule.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study were to analysis the effect on change of spinal neuron excitability during gait training of hemiplegia patients by the functional electrical stimulation. Methods: Thirty six hemiplegia patients participated in this study. Stimulation conditions of FES were pulse rate 35pps, pulse width $250{\mu}s$, and on-time 0.3 second, treatment hour was 30 min. and treatment period was once a day for five days a week through six weeks. For functional evaluations before and after treatment, Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), active range of motion (AROM), Hmax threshold, H/Mmax ratio were measured and the following conclusions were obtained. Results: Functional evaluation showed significant changes in experimental group as MAS(p<0.01), AROM(p<0.001), compared to control group. In spinal neuron excitability evaluation, change of Hmax threshold was significantly reduced in both non weight bearing (p<0.001) and bearing condition (p<0.05), H/Mmax ratio was significantly reduced in non weight bearing (p<0.05) and bearing condition (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, application of FES to hemiplegia patients in recovery stage during gait training improved mitigation of muscular spasticity, balance adjustment and moving ability and it was interpreted that it was caused by mitigation of muscular spasticity by the spinal neuron excitability.

  • In this work, a study is presented of the static characteristics of 4H-SiC DMOSFETs obtained by adjustment of the p-base region. The structure of this MOSFET was designed by the use of a device simulator (ATLAS, Silvaco.). The static characteristics of SiC DMOSFETs such as the blocking voltages, threshold voltages, on-resistances, and figures of merit were obtained as a function of variations in p-base doping concentration from $1\;{\times}\;10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$ to $5\;{\times}\;10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$ and doping depth from $0.5\;{\mu}m$ to $1.0\;{\mu}m$. It was found that the doping concentration and the depth of P-base region have a close relation with the blocking and threshold voltages. For that reason, silicon carbide DMOSFET structures with highly intensified blocking voltages with good figures of merit can be achieved by adjustment of the p-base depth and doping concentration.
