  • Rye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a new class of solar cell, which consists of nanoporous TiO$_2$ electrode, dye-sensitizer, electrolyte, and counter electrode. Such cell is operated in sunlight via the principle of photosynthetic electrochemistry. In order to obtain the good dispersion of nano size TiO$_2$ particles In slurry, the pH of solvent, the sort and quantify of solvent additive and the quantity of surfactant were adjusted. As results, the lower the pH of solvent was the lower the viscosity of the slurry became. The addition of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol to dilute HNO$_3$ brought about the lowering of viscosity and the enhancement of stability in slurry. The addition of surfactant lowered the viscosity of slurry. It was possible to obtain the homogeneous and uniformly dispersed mesoporous TiO$_2$ film using the dilute HNO$_3$ solvent of pH 2 with the addition of ethylene glycol and neutral surfactant. DSSC was assembled with TiO$_2$ electrode and Pt electrode, and its photoelectric property was measured using the monochromatic wavelength in the rangee of 350∼700 nm.

  • The semiconducting property of Sb-doped tin oxide thin film electrode was investigated and the electrocatalytic effect of this electrode for $SO_2$ (or sulfite, bisulfite ions) oxidation reaction was studied under various conditions. The anodic oxidation of $SO_2$ at tin oxide thin film electrode commenced at lower potential with increasing pH, and good electrocatalytic effect was shown of $SO_3^=$ oxidation in basic solution. In the acidic solutions the electrocatalytic effect of platinum-or palladium-incorporated tin oxide electrode was found to be due to the sites of Pt or Pd exposed on the electrode surface. The electrocatalytic effect of tin oxide electrode was distinctive from that of Pt-or Pd-containing electrodes.

  • This study has been carried out to evaluate the performance of $PbO_2$ electrode for the purpose of degradation of N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of OH radical), generation of ozone and decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The effect of the applied current (0.2~1.2 A), electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl and $Na_2SO_4$), electrolyte concentration (0.0~2.5 g/L) and solution pH (3~11) were evaluated. Experimental results showed that RhB and RNO removal were increased with the increase of current, NaCl dosage and decrease of pH. Ozone generation tendencies appeared with the almost similar to the RhB and RNO degradation, except of solution pH (Ozone generation was increased with increase of pH). Optimum current for RhB degradation and consumption of electric power was 1.0 A. The RhB degradation with Cl type electrolyte were higher than that with the sulfate type. Optimum NaCl dosage for RhB degradation was 1.0 g/L.

  • In general, acid rain is unbuffered solution with low ionic strength and high resistance. Therefore during the pH measurement of acid rain, error can be occurred due to the liquid junction potential difference between the sample and the standard solution. Actually the average conductivity of rain in Taeduk Science Town during 1998 is 12.8 ${\mu}S/cm$, while that of pH standmd solutions is about 5,980 ${\mu}S/cm$. There is a large difference in ionic strength. To compensate the bias due to residual liquid junction potentials, a quality control standard(QCS) of dilute sulfuric acid, which has the conductivity and pH values simikw to rain, was prepared. The pH of QCS solution was determined using the hydrogen electrode system without liquid junction, and compensation has been made for the bias terms by performing the pH measurements with glass electrode. On the basis of this compensation method, the pH vaiues of rain in Taeduk Science Town during 1998 were measured.

  • A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with poly(p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid) [Poly(p-ABSA)] film is fabricated by voltammetric technique in phosphate buffer solution (pH 8.0) containing $5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;mol\;L^{-1}$p- ABSA. Electrochemical behaviors of tryptophan at the Poly(p-ABSA) film electrode are investigated with voltammetry. The results indicate that the electrochemical response of tryptophan is improved significantly in the presence of poly(p-ABSA) film. Compared with the bare glassy carbon electrode, the Poly(p-ABSA) film electrode remarkably enhances the irreversible oxidation peak current of tryptophan. Some parameters such as voltammetric sweeping segments for the electrochemical polymerization, pH, accumulation potential and accumulation time are optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the oxidation peak current is proportional to tryptophan concentration in the range of $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ to $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;mol\;L^{-1}$, and $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ to $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;mol\;L^{-1}$ with a detection limit of $7.0\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;mol\;L^{-1}$. The proposed procedure is successfully applied to the determination of tryptophan in a commercial amino acid oral solution.

  • The pH-dependent reduction behavior of N-monosubstituted-4,4'-bipyridinium ions ($RBPY^+: R=methyl(C_1)$; benzyl; n-octyl; n-dodecyl) has been investigated by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. At acidic condition, $RBPY^+$ is protonated and the protonated species are reduced by two consecutive one-electron processes. The $2e^-$ reduced species undergoes a chemical reaction with $H^+$. The second-order rate constant $(k_H)$ of the homogeneous chemical process is $(3.7{\pm}0.3){\times}10^3M^{-1}s^{-1}$ for the two electron reduction product of $C_1BPY^+$. At high pH, the electrode reduction of $RBPY^+$ is one-step $2e^-$ transfer process with concomitant addition of $H^+$, which is confirmed by cyclic voltammetric study using a microdisk electrode.

  • The polymeric membrane electrodes based on N,N'-bis-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-naphthalene-1,8-diamine as an ion carrier were prepared and tested for the copper-ion selective electrode. The membrane has a linear dynamic range between $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-2}$ M with a Nernstian slope of 29.6 mV per decade, and its detection limit was $10^{-5.62}$M. The potentiometric response is independent of the pH range of 3-5. The proposed electrode showed good selectivity and response for $Cu^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions in pH 4.0 buffer solutions.

  • Dye wastewater was treated by using an electrochemical oxidation process. Various combinations of electrodes such as carbon, Al and Fe were investigated. In this study, electrode material, electrolyte concentration, electrode distance, current density, and pH value were found to have significant effect on both pollutant removal efficiency and current efficiency in electrochemical oxidation process. After electrolysis for 40min with carbon/Al, it was observed that COD, $T-N, NH_{4}^{+}-N$ and color of treated wastwater were reduced from 580mg/$\ell$ to 145mg/$\ell$, 67.2mg/$\ell$ to 26.8mg/$\ell$, 46.8mg/$\ell$ to 1.4mg/$\ell$, and 4200 Pt-Co units to 336 Pt-Co units, respectively. The optimal conditions of the electrooxidation process to treat the wastewater for this study were found to be such : current density ; 16.67mA/$cm^2$, electrode distance ; 2.5cm, pH value ; 5.0 and carbon/Al electrode.

  • In this study, the effect of the various operating conditions on the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ from $Cr^{6+}$ containing wastewater which has strong toxicity by using electrolysis with iron electrode as anode and aluminum electrode as cathode was investigated. The removal efficiency of $Cr^{6+}$ was increased as the pH was decreased, as the distance of electrode was decreased and the voltage was increased. The reaction temperature slightly affected the removal efficiency. The optimum conditions for the treatment of $Cr^{6+}$ containing wastewater were initial pH 3, 5 volt and the distance of electrode was 1cm. The feasibility of the electrochemical treatment to the $Cr^{6+}$ containing industrial wastewater was verified from this study.

  • An enzyme electrode for the amperometric measurement of urea was prepared by co-immobilizing L-glutamate dehydrogenase and urease onto an Immobilon-AV affinity membrane attached to a glassy carbon electrode. The reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NADH) was used as the electroactive species. The electrochemical oxidation of NADH was monitored at +1.0 volt vs. Ag/AgCl. The enzyme-immobilized electrode was linear over the range of 2.0 × 10-5 to 2 × 10-4 M. The response time of the electrode was approximately 3 min. and the optimum pH of the enzyme immobilized membrane was pH 7.4-7.6 (Dulbcco's buffer solution). It was stable for at least two weeks or 50 assays. There was no interference from other physiological species, except from high levels of ascorbic acid.
