1,3,2-Dioxaphosphorinanes are suitable compounds for studying the stereochemistry of substitution at phosphorus. Cis- and trans-5-hydroxymethl-5-methyl-2-thiono-2ethoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane were prepared, and their structures and stereochemistry unambiguously assigned by NMR and X-ray crystallography with acetoxy and 3,5-dinitrobenzoyloxy derivatives, respectively. Trans isomer gave $^{31}P$ NMR signal at higher field than cis isomer, and the ring proton Spectrum of cis isomer showed characteristic pattern for identifying its geometry. In X-ray crystallography they adopted a chair conformation with the ethoxy groups in the axial positions, and the sulfide groups in the equatorial positions. A flattening of the ring around the phosphorus center was noted, the POC bond angles were about $120^{\circ}$, and the C-O bonds in the ring were significantly longer than the C-O bond for the ethoxy group or the C-O bond for hydroxyl group.

A classical result of A. Cohn states that, if we express a prime p in base 10 as $$p=a_n10^n+a_{n-1}10^{n-1}+{\cdots}+a_110+a_0$$, then the polynomial $f(x)=a_nx^n+a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+{\cdots}+a_1x+a_0$ is irreducible in ${\mathbb{Z}}[x]$. This problem was subsequently generalized to any base b by Brillhart, Filaseta, and Odlyzko. We establish this result of A. Cohn in $O_K[x]$, K an imaginary quadratic field such that its ring of integers, $O_K$, is a Euclidean domain. For a Gaussian integer ${\beta}$ with ${\mid}{\beta}{\mid}$ > $1+{\sqrt{2}}/2$, we give another representation for any Gaussian integer using a complete residue system modulo ${\beta}$, and then establish an irreducibility criterion in ${\mathbb{Z}}[i][x]$ by applying this result.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in coastal marine environment. PAHs enter estuarine and nearshore marine environment via several routes such as combustion of fossil fuels, domestic and industrial effluents and oil spills. In August of 1997, mussels(Mytilus edulis) were collected at 6 sites near Kori nuclear power plant in order to analyze the PAH content by HPLC with uv/vis detection. Unfortunately, I could not find any living oysters in which I firstly intended to measure the PAH content in the study area. NPTHL and ANCPL were the major dominant PAH compounds in mussels living in the intertidal zone of Kori, Korea, and DahA, BbF, BaP were the next dominant PAH group in mussels in the study area. The mean concentrations of 15 PAH in mussels ranged from 3.2 to 1,680 ppb(mean 105$\pm$60.5 ppb). Compared with other studies world over, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs were relatively low in mussels in the study area, even though total PAH content was rather high. According to N/P(Naphthalene/Phenanthrene) ratio(147) and the ratio of 2∼3 ring to 3∼5 ring PAHs(58∼90 %) in mussels in the study area, I expect that the major source of PAHs in this study area is rather fresh petroleum-derived. This study presents preliminary data for the PAH levels in mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori, and the data will hopefully be utilized for the assessment of oil pollution in the East Sea, Korea.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the effects of passive exercise on upper extremities muscle spasticity, finger edema, and depression for chronic stroke patients. Methods: A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was employed for this study. The subjects were 30 elderly patients who were hospitalized to treat chronic stroke. 15 patients were assigned to the experimental and control groups respectively. Passive exercise for 20 minutes per day, five days a week for 8 weeks (total 40 times) was provided for the experimental group. Outcome measurements included manual spasticity test to measure upper extremities' muscle spasticity, the ring measurement method for finger edema and the Korean version of Short-form Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS-K) for depression. Results: The upper extremities' muscle spasticity (Z=-2.52 p=.012) and the degree of depression (F=5.56, p=.006) in the experimental group were significantly reduced compared to those of the control group. But the degree of finger edema did not significantly differ between the two groups (F=1.46, p=.240). Conclusion: Passive exercise for upper extremities should be encouraged for elderly patients with chronic stroke to enhance the upper extremities' functional capacity as well as depression.

Fluorometholone $(C_{22}H_{29}FO_4)$, M.W. = 376.5, monoclinic, $P2_1$, a = 6.410(4), b = 13.431(3), c = 10.996(3)$\AA$, $\beta$ = 92.81$(3)^{\circ}$, Z = 2, F(000) = 404, T = 292K, $\lambda$(Mo-$K_\alpha$) = 0.7107$\AA$, $\mu$ = 0.57$cm^{-1}$, $D_c$ = 1.32 $g/cm^3$, $D_m$ = 1.31 $g/cm^3$. 최종 R값은 1769개의 측정가능 회절반점들에 대하여 0.032 이었다. A 고리는 평면을 이루고 있으며, B 고리는 대칭성이 좋은 의자형이고, C 고리는 약간 찌그러진 의자형이다. D 고리는 13$\alpha$-14$\beta$-half-chair와 13$\alpha$-envelope의 중간형태이다. C(16)-C(17)-C(20)-O(20) torsion angle 값이 $-7.9^{\circ}$로 9-fluoro-6-methylprednisolone 분자 I 와 II의 $-31.9^{\circ}$와 $-16.5^{\circ}$보다 낮은 값을 보여준다.

배경: 퇴행성 승모판막역류증으로 승모판막성형술을 받은 환자들 중에서 partial flexible band를 이용한 경우와 complete rigid ring을 이용한 경우의 중기 성적을 비교해 보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 2004년 1월부터 2008년 9월 사이에 단독 승모판막역류증으로 승모판막수술을 받은 112명의 환자 중 퇴행성 질환으로 확진되고, 승모판막성형술 및 승모판막륜 링 삽입술을 시행 받은 71명의 환자(남:여=36:35, $55{\pm}13$세)를 대상으로 하였다. 환자들을 승모판막륜성형술에 partial flexible band를 이용한 I군(43명)과 Complete rigid ring을 이용한 II군(28명)으로 나누어 단기 및 중기 성적을 비교하였다. 두 군 간의 수술 전 특성에는 유의한 차이가 없었다. 추적관찰 기간의 중앙값은 36개월(2~69개월)이었다. 결과: 수술관련 사망은 없었으며, 심방세동(n=7), 저심박출 증후군(n=5)과 같은 수술 관련 합병증의 발생은 두 군 간 발생률의 차이가 없었고, II군에서 만기 사망이 1예 있었다. 4년 승모판막역류재발 자유 생존률은 I군과 II군에서 각각 94.5%와 91.8%였다(p=0.695). 좌심실 구출율은 수술 후 조기($7{\pm}2$일)에는 저하 되었고, 최종 추적관찰 시점($25{\pm}16$개월)에서 회복되었다(p=0.002). 이런 변화 추세는 양군에 차이가 없었다(p=0.905). 재수술은 3명의 환자(I군에서 1예, II군에서 2예, p=0.905)에서 시행되었다. 4년 판막 관련 사건 자유 생존률은 두 군 간에 차이가 없었다(I군 95.2% vs II군 92.6%, p=0.646). 결론: 승모판막륜 성형술에 사용되는 판막륜 링의 종류는 퇴행성 승모판막 역류증에 대한 승모판막 성형술의 중기 임상성적 및 기능결과에는 영향을 주지 않았다.

Objective: This study evaluated the effect of acid whey and freeze-dried cranberries on the physicochemical characteristics, lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of nitrite-free fermented sausage made from deer meat and pork fat. Antioxidant interactions between acid whey and cranberry compounds were also explored. Methods: Four formulations of fermented venison sausage were prepared: F1 (control), F2 (with 5% liquid acid whey), F3 (with 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries), and F4 (with 5% liquid acid whey and 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries). Each sample was analyzed for pH, water activity ($a_w$), heme iron content, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value and conjugated dienes at the end of the manufacturing process and at 30 and 90 days of refrigerated storage. Fatty acid composition was measured once at the end of the manufacturing process. Results: At the end of ripening, all samples presented statistically different values for a pH range of 4.47 to pH 4.59. The sum of the unsaturated fatty acids was higher, while the conjugated diene and the TBARS values were lower in sausages with freeze-dried cranberries as compared to the control sausage. The highest content of heme iron (21.52 mg/kg) at day 90 was found in the sausage formulation with the addition of freeze-dried cranberries, which suggests that the addition of cranberries stabilized the porphyrin ring of the heme molecule during storage and thereby reduced the release of iron. The use of liquid acid whey in combination with cranberries appears to not be justified in view of the oxidative stability of the obtained products. Conclusion: The results suggest that the application of freeze-dried cranberries can lower the intensity of oxidative changes during the storage of nitrite-free fermented sausage made

The structure of the anti-inflammatory agent, naproxen sodium was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal of the compound, which was recrystallized from methanol solution, is nomoclinic, space group $P2_1$ with a = 21. 177(6), b = 5.785(2), c = 5.443(2) $\AA, \beta$ = 91.41(3)$\{\circ}$ and Z = 2. The calculated density is 1.346; the observed value is nements based on 1093 reflections ($F\geq3\sigma$(F)) gave the final R value of 0.043. There are of one water per one compound molecule in the crystal. The carboxyl group of the molecule is nearly perpendicular to the naphthalene ring. The molecules are arranged along with the screw axis, and stabilized by five 0...Na type interactions. The molecule retains nearly same dimensions and similar conformation compared to its parent compound, naproxen, except for the torsion angles around C(5)-C(11) bond.

We have fabricated and analyzed photodiodes for optical link with Si pin structures. As the results of experiment, the web patterned photodiode(type C) with $p^{+}$-guard ring showed low junction capacitance of 6~7 pF at $V_{R}$=-5V and high separation ability for optical signal(dark current : $\leq$ 5 nA, optical signal current : $\geq$ 340 nA) due to the small effective $p^{+}$-n junction area and the expanded electric field region. The fabricated Si pin photodiode can be applicable for detecting an optical signal with the wavelength of about 660~670 nm. It can also be integrated with the twin well CMOS structure to develope an one chip based optical receiver IC. IC.C.

The center of the Lie group $SU(n)$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_n$. If $d$ divides $n$, the quotient $SU(n)/\mathbb{Z}_d$ is also a Lie group. Such groups are locally isomorphic, and their Weyl groups $W(SU(n)/\mathbb{Z}_d)$ are the symmetric group ${\sum}_n$. However, the integral representations of the Weyl groups are not equivalent. Under the mod $p$ reductions, we consider the structure of invariant rings $H^*(BT^{n-1};\mathbb{F}_p)^W$ for $W=W(SU(n)/\mathbb{Z}_d)$. Particularly, we ask if each of them is a polynomial ring. Our results show some polynomial and non-polynomial cases.
