  • A new series of polyarylate copolyesters were prepared by melt polycondensation of 1,4-diacetoxy-2,5-(α-phenylisopropyl)benzene with mixture of terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid in varying ratio. And their general properties such as the glass transition temperature, crystalline melting temperature, crystallinity and solubility were studied. The intrinsic viscosity values of the present polymers measured in a mixed solvent of phenol/p-chlorophenol/1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane ranged from 0.45 to 0.66 depending on the composition and molecular weight. The copolyesters containing greater than 20 mole % of isophthalic acid were found to be amorphous, whereas the homopolymer derived from terephthalic acid was semicrystalline with a melting point of 414℃. The glass transition temperatures of the polymers ranged from 165 to 180℃ depending on the composition. The copolyesters containing 50 mole % and greater of isophthalic acid moiety were soluble at room temperature in such common solvents as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide.

  • The polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) initiated by cobalt (II) nitrate in tetrahydrofuran (THF) has been studied. From the results of kinetic studies, the overall polymerization rate (Rp) could be expressed as following; $R_p=k\;[cobalt(Ⅱ)\;nitrate]^{0.5}\;[MMA]^{1.5}$ By considering the effects of chelating agent on the polymerization rate, it could be assumed that the monomer, MMA might form a coordination complex with cobalt(II) nitrate. In the presence of radical inhibitor hydroquinone, the inhibition time was observed. And the apparent overall activation energy was calculated to be 14.0 kcal/mole.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) containing a flexible spacer was synthesized from hydroquinone, p-hydrofybenzoic acid, and 1,6-dibromohexane. Intercalation of TLCP in layered clays is accomplished by heating the polymer with dodecyl ammonium-montmorillonite (C$_{12}$-MMT) above melt transition temperature (T$_{m}$). Liquid crystallinity of the TLCP/C$_{12}$-MMT hybrid was not observed when $C_{12}$-MMT content was above 1 wt%. Some of the $C_{12}$-MMTs in TLCP were highly dispersed in a nanometer scale, but some of them were agglomerated. Thermal and morphological properties of the nanocomposites were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), polarized optical microscope, and electron microscopes (SEM and TEM). TEM).

  • Whole cell of Phanerochaete chrysosporium with reducing agent was applied to verify the degradation mechanism of aromatic compounds derived from lignin precisely. Unlike the free-reducing agent experiment, various degraded products of aromatic compounds were detected under the fungal treatment. Our results suggested that demethoxylation, $C_{\alpha}$ oxidation and ring cleavage of aromatic compounds occurred under the catabolic system of P. chrysosporium. After that, degraded products stimulated the primary metabolism of fungus, so succinic acid was ultimately main degradation product of lignin derived-aromatic compounds. Especially, hydroquinone was detected as final intermediate in the degradation of aromatics and production of succinic acid. In conclusions, P. chrysosporium has an unique catabolic metabolism related to the production of succinic acid from lignin derived-aromatic compounds, which was meaningful in terms of lignin valorization.

  • We have been studied photosensitization mechanism's additive effect, of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl-diimide and X-phthalocyanine (charge generation materials), using the photochemical and photoelectrochemical approach. It was found that the photoreceptor on the excited state reacts with metal oxide, which creates the charge transfer on the interface of SnO2/electrolyte. In the electrode (X5P1) made of five X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, the cathodic photocurrent of X-phthalocyanine in the 400-600 nm region was increased by the addition of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide. The maximum wavelength of fluorescence of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide showed no dependence on the temperature. The addition of 4-dibenzylamino-2-methylbenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone known as charge transport material was represented as decreasing photocurrent for X-phthalocyanine and perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide, respectively. In the electrode (X1P1) made of single X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, an anodic photocurrent of about 10.5 nA was generated by addition of hydroquinone at 550 nm. And the characteristic of photoinduced discharge was shown to decrease by a factor of 5 and the speed of dark decay was increased by a factor of 1.2.

  • Kinetic characteristics dependent on several factors such as iron mineral and organic solvents were investigated. When F $e^{0}$ , FeS and Fe $S_2$ were used as mediators, minerals affecting reaction rate were in the following order : $Fe_{0}$ 0/ > FeS > $FeS_2$ when in contact $C_2$C $l_{6}$ . The more chloride substituted, the higher reaction rate were observed. The reaction rates were dependent on pH, shaking rate, temperature and specific surface area. 1, 10-phenanthroline and EDTA degradation rates were fast, indicating that they adsorbed on the surface of the iron which makes the electron transfer reaction easy. Nitrate which has $\pi$* orbital of molecular can increase electron transfer rate because it is delocalized in its entity. The reaction rates were not affected by hydroquinone. Degradation rates were much enhanced with naturally occurring kaolinite because of the surface corrosion of Fe mineral. However, The reaction rate was not affected by F $e^{2+}$ or S $O_4$$^{2-}$ presented in solution.n.

  • Allelopathic chemicals exudated from plants stimulate or inhibit crops directly or indirectly. To prove the effects of allelochemics, we isolated and identified the compounds by bioassays on the monoculture and crosscropping cultre systems. p-Coumaric acid were exudated on all of the test crops such as tomato, red pepper, lettuce, chinese cabbage and sesame, but pyrogallol and phenylacetic acid on tomato. hydroquinone on red pepper and egg plant, pyrogallol on lettuce, and vanillic acid on chinese cabbage. The highest total concentration of allelochemics was $5,883{\mu}g$ on tomato, lowest was $220{\mu}g/g$ dry plant weight on sesame. On the cross-cropping culture of tomato-egg plant, tomato-red pepper, chinese cabbage-egg plant, chinese cabbage-red pepper and chinese cabbage-sasame, the plant height, aerial dry weight and total dry weight of the tomato and the chinese cabbage were inereased contrast with monoculture, but decreased greatly on red pepper and sesame. Growth rate of both crops on the cross-cropping culture of tomato-chinese cabbage declined, while that of chinese cabbage was increased but lettuce decreased on the chinese cabbage-lettuce cross-cropping culture contrast with monoculture.

  • Effects of operating parameters such as applied voltage, solution conductivity, ferrous ion concentration, electrode material on phenol degradation by pulsed corona discharges were investigated in laboratory scale experiments. The increase of applied voltage enhanced the phenol degradation by generating more energetic electrons. The solution conductivity inversely affected phenol removal rate in the tested ranges because the increase of conductivity decreased the electric field strength through the liquid phase. The addition of ferrous sulfate promoted the phenol degradation through the OH radical production by the Fentonlike reactions between ferrous ion and hydrogen peroxide generated by pulsed corona discharges. Catechol and hydroquinone were detected as primary intermediates of phenol degradation and the decrease of pH and the increase of conductivity were observed probably due to the generation of organic acids. Almost all of the initial phenol was disappeared and 29% of total organic corbon (TOC) was removed in the condition of 0.5 mM of ferrous sulfate after approximately 230 kJ of discharge energy transferred to the reactor.

  • This study was investigated to determine antimutagenic effects of enzymatic browning reaction products (PEBRPs) obtained by reaction of polyphenol compouns with oxidase extracted from potato. Catechol (Ca) PEBRPs showed the strongeest inhibitor effects with 90% inhibition on benzo-($\alpha$)-pyrene(B($\alpha$)P) induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, but he least with40% inhibition on the 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) induced mutagenesis in TA98. The strong antimutagenic activities with 80% inhibition were observed in the presence of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of hydroquinone(HQ)-PEBRP on the B($\alpha$)P or 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole(Trp-P-1) induced mutagenesis in TA98, whereas HQ-PEBRP showed the least antimutagenic effect on 2-AF-induced mutagenesis. The addition of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$ hydroxyhydroquinone(HHQ)-PEBRP to the plate led to approximately 82% inhibitory effects on 2-AF or Trp-P-1 induced mutagenesis in TA98, whereas the least antimutagenicity was obsrved in the4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4-NQO) induced mutagenesis in the presence of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of HHQ-PEBRP. More than 80% inhibiton were observed in the presence of 200$\mu\textrm{g}$/plate of Pyrogalol(Py)-PEBRP on the B($\alpha$)P or Trp-P-1 induced mutagenesis in TA98, but the least with 38% inhibition on 4-NQO induced mutagenesis in TA98. The results indicate that enzymatic browing reaction products of potato have a strong modulatory effect on mutagen induced mutagenesis in TA98.
