Assessment of In Vitro Oocyte Maturation in Two Gobiid Fish Species, Chasmichthys dolichognathus and Tridentiger trigonocephalus after Exposure to Benzo[a]pyrene

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants derived from incomplete combustion of carbons and crude oil. In this study, we investigated the effects of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a representative PAHs on in vitro sex steroid hormone production and germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) using isolated oocytes of longchin goby (Chasmichthys dolichognathus) and chameleon goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus). Oocytes in diameters of 0.8-0.9 (end vitellogenic stage) and 0.9-1.0 mm (germinal vesicle migratory stage) from longchin goby and 0.5 mm (fully vitellogenic stage) from chameleon goby were used. In GVBD assay, B[a]P at 10 nM stimulated GVBD in the oocytes of 0.8-0.9 mm from longchin goby. B[a]P at 1 nM stimulated GVBD in the oocytes with diameter 0.5 mm from chameleon goby. In steroid production from oocytes of longchin goby, B[a]P at 100 nM decreased testosterone (T) production, B[a]P at 1,000 nM increased estraiol-17 (J (E2) production and 10 and 100 nM increased $17,20{\beta}$-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one ($17{\alpha}20{\beta}P$) production in the oocytes with diameter 0.8-0.9 mm. B[a]P at 1,000 nM increased E2 production, 100 and 1,000 nM increased $17{\alpha}20{\beta}P$ production in the oocytes with diameter 0.9-1.0 mm. In steroid production of oocytes from chameleon goby, B[a]P at 1,000 nM increased $E_2$ production. B[a]P at 10 nM increased $17{\alpha}20{\beta}P$ production. In the ratio of $E_2$ to T ($E_2$/T), B[a]P at 100 and 1,000 nM increased $E_2$/T in the oocytes of longchin goby. B[a]P at 100 nM also increased $E_2$/T in the oocytes of chameleon goby. Taken together, these results suggest that B[a]P have not only weak estrogenic effects but progestogenic effects on oocyte maturation.

Effects of Nonylphenol on the Secretion of Catecholamines and Adrenocortical Hormones from Short-Term Incubated Rat Adrenal Glands

  • Previously, we showed that a chronic-low-dose nonylphenol (NP) exposure resulted in histological changes with sexually dimorphic pattern in rat adrenal glands. We hypothesized that such structural changes are closely related to the hormonal secretory patterns. To test this hypothesis, we developed the short-term adrenal incubation method, and measured the levels of catecholamines and cortical steroids using the high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The norepinephrine (NE) levels in media from NP-treated female adrenal, except 100 pM NP, were significantly increased [control (CTL) vs 1 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 10 nM NP, p<0.05; vs 100 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.01]. The NE secretion from male adrenal was higher when treated with 100 nM and 1 µM NP (CTL vs 100 nM NP, p<0.05; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.05, respectively). The aldosterone level in the female adrenal media treated with 100 pM NP was significantly decreased, on the other hand, that of media treated with 10 nM NP was significantly increased (CTL vs 100 pM NP, p<0.05; vs 10 nM NP, p<0.01). In male adrenal media, the aldosterone levels of 10 nM, 100 nM and 1 µM NP-treated media were significantly declined (CTL vs 10 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 100 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.001). These results showed the NP treatment altered secretory pattern of aldosterone from adrenals of both sexes, showing sexual dimorphism. It may be helpful for understanding possible adrenal pathophysiology, and endocrine disrupting chemicals-related sexually dimorphic phenomena in adrenals.

  • N-Benzoylglycylanilide and N-benzoylalanylanilide derivatives were synthesized from N-benzoylglycine and N-benzoylalane with anilines. respectively. The products were identified by elemental analysis, IR, UV and NMR spectra with N-benzoylglycylanilide (I), N-benzoylglycyl-o-toluidide(II), N-benzoylglycyl-m-toluidide(III), N-benzoylglycyl-p-toluidide(IV), N-benzoyl-L-alanylanilide(V), N-bnzoyl-L-alanyl-o-toluidide(VI), N-benzoyl-L-alnnyl-m-toluidise(VII), N-benzoyl-L-alanyl-p-toluidide(VIII). These compounds were tested for their phytotoxicity to the germination and seedling growth of rice, radish, green pea plants and turf grass. Among them, N-benzoyl-Lalanyl-m-toluidide had strongly inhibitory effect on the seedling growth of radish seeds, and N-benzoyl-L-alanylanilide showed an inhibitory activity especially upon the seedling growth of turf seeds. In addition, the inhibitory rate of plant seed growth differed with the isomeric position(ortho, meta and para) of methyl group; N-benzoylglycyl-m-toluidide was more effective than both N-benzoylglycyl-o-toluidide and N-benzoylglycyl-p-toluidide derivatives, and also N-benzoyl-L-alanyl-m-toluidide was more effective than both N-benzoyl-L-alanyl-o-toluidide and N-benzoyl-L-alanyl-p-toluidide.

ON m, n-BALANCED PROJECTIVE AND m, n-TOTALLY PROJECTIVE PRIMARY ABELIAN GROUPS

  • If $m$ and $n$ are non-negative integers, then three new classes of abelian $p$-groups are defined and studied: the $m$, $n$-simply presented groups, the $m$, $n$-balanced projective groups and the $m$, $n$-totally projective groups. These notions combine and generalize both the theories of simply presented groups and $p^{w+n}$-projective groups. If $m$, $n=0$, these all agree with the class of totally projective groups, but when $m+n{\geq}1$, they also include the $p^{w+m+n}$-projective groups. These classes are related to the (strongly) n-simply presented and (strongly) $n$-balanced projective groups considered in [15] and the n-summable groups considered in [2]. The groups in these classes whose lengths are less than ${\omega}^2$ are characterized, and if in addition we have $n=0$, they are determined by isometries of their $p^m$-socles.

  • The study was carried out to analysis of the pollutant $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, T-P for water quality proximated to sediment in lake of K river basin. water extracted from sediment showed higher $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, T-P datas than water proximated to sediment. Also, water proximated to sediment and water 5-10cm proximated to sediment showed the following data : $COD_{Mn}$, 1.2~1.9mg/L, T-N, 1.3~6.2mg/L, TP, 0.05~0.26mg/L, respectively. From this results, we have known the fact that the pollution degree of sediment have an effect on the water quality in lake and stream.

  • Newly-developed fabrication of a p-n heterojunction diode constructed with a p-Si nanowire (NW) and an n-ZnO nanoparticle (NP) thin-film by the dielectrophoresis (DEP) technique is demonstrated in this study. With the bias of 20 Vp-p at the input frequency of 1 MHz, the most efficient assembly of the n-ZnO NPs is shown for the fabrication of the p-n heterojunction diode with a p-Si NW. The p-n heterojunction diode fabricated in this study represents current rectifying characteristics with the turn on voltage of 1.1 V. The diode can be applied to the fabrication of optoelectrical devices such as photodetectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or solar cells based on the high conductivity of the NW and the high surface to volume ratio of the NP thin film.

  • A new method of forming silicon p$^{+}$-n-n$^{+}$ junctions has been attempted by using the VDH-Implanter (Vacuum Discharge and Heating). Each of p$^{+}$-n and n-n$^{+}$ junctions was formed on both sides of an n-type silicon substrate by means of predeposition of each dopant and their bombarding due to rarefied air ions together with the preheating of the substrate in the implanter. The recifying principle of the p$^{+}$-n-n$^{+}$ junctions is thought to be based on the theory of double injection. The I-V characteristic of the diode has shown that it has a fairly high forward current density with the desirable rise due to vary low voltage though the reverse voltage is a little low on account of the low resistivity of the silicon substrate.n substrate.

  • The use of a thin film of indium between the ITO and the $n^{+}$-InP contact layers for InP/InGaAs HPTs was studied without degrading its excellent optical transmittance properties. ITO/$n^{+}$-InP ohmic contact was successfully achieved by the deposition of Indium and thermal annealing. The specific contact resistance of about 6.6$\times$$10^{-4}$$\Omega\textrm{cm}^2$ was measured by use of the transmission line method (TLM). However, as the thermal annealing was just performed to ITO/$n^{+}$-InP contact without the deposition of Indium between ITO and $n^{+}$-InP, it exhibited schottky characteristics. In the applications, the DC characteristics of InP/InGaAs HPTs with ITO emitter contacts was compared with that of InP/InGaAs HBTs with the opaque emitter contacts.

A Study on the Equilibrium Flow Area of Tidal Inlets in the Western Coasta of Korea (우리나라 서해안해변형성의 평형 관한 연구)

  • The Purpose of this study deal with some functional realationships in tidal of the Western Coast of Korean Peninsula under equilibrium conditions. The study was carried out by using actual field data meausred at 11 bay observation stations along the Western Coast. The minimum cross section versus the max. tidal prism of mean high water(Ps), the mean tital prism of mean high water(Pm), and the mean tidal prism of mean low water tide (Pn) are correlated. The most dominant results are attained at the A-Ps correlations. Furthermore it is well agreed with O'Briens results for the Pacific Coast of the United Stated. The results derived are as follows. $$A=9.078{\times10^{-4} P_n^{0.865}$$ $$A=3.048{\times10^{-3} P_n^{0.808}$$ $$A=2.30{\times10^{-2} P_n^{0.730}$$ By using those relationships if we know the minimum cross sectional area of the bay, we can easily estimate the tidal prism of the bay.

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI array architecture for high speed processing of FBMA. First of all, the sequential FBMA is transformed into a single assignment code by using the index space expansion, and then the dependance graph is obtained from it. The two dimensional VLSI array is derived by projecting the dependance graph along the optimal direction. Since the candidate blocks in the search range are overlapped with columns as well as rows, the processing elements of the VLSI array are designed to reuse the overlapped data. As the results, the number of data inputs is reduced so that the processing performance is improved. The proposed VLSI array has (N$^2$+1)${\times}$(2p+1) processing elements and (N+2p) input ports where N is the block size and p is the maximum search range. The computation time of the rat reference block is (N$^2$+2(p+1)N+6p), and the block pipeline period is (3N+4p-1).
