  • Tropospheric ozone data in Korea for 1998-2002 were analyzed to assess the impact on vegetation. SUM06(sum of hourly concentrations at or above 0.06 ppm) and AOT40(accumulated exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb), widely used as ozone indices in the U.S. and Europe, were calculated based on hourly ozone concentration in 612 areas during 1998-2002 in Korea. SUM06 of the highest 30 areas were 5-12 ppm/hr which were almost the same levels of the U.S. average, and a crop loss of 5% would be expected. Ozone pollution in Seoul during 1998-2002 had decreased compared to that for 1990-97 except in the Northern area; however, ozone pollution in Kyunggi during 1998-2002 had been increased twice compare to the previous 5 years. Korea was divided into four regions: Seoul Metropolitan area, Jungbu, Honam, and Youngnam. Ozone pollution in the Seoul Metropolitan area was much higher during 1998-2000 than the other areas, but ozone pollution during 2001-2002 was almost the same in all four regions. Chunnam-Kwangyang na Kyungbuk-Gumi, famous industrial complexes in southern Korea, were significant ozone pollution areas. However, other industrial complexes, such as Incheon, Ulsan, and Kyunggi-Sihwa, were not polluted compared to their neighbors. Comparing all ozone indices, SUM06(yr), SUM06(3mon), AOT40(yr), AOT40(3mon), number of hours exceeding 100 ppb, 95 percentile, 99 percentile, and maximum concentration, it was determined reasonable to use SUM06(3mon), AOT40(3mon) and number of hours exceeding 100 ppb for evaluation of the chronic impact of ozone on vegetation.

  • Emissions of ozone precursors ($NO_x$ and VOCs) and photochemical ozone creation potentials (POCPs) of VOC emission sources were investigated in the largest port city (i.e., Busan), Korea during the year 2011. This analysis was performed using the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS) national emission inventory provided by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea. For $NO_x$, the emissions from off-road mobile sources in Busan were the most dominant (e.g., $31,202ton\;yr^{-1}$), accounting for about 60% of the total $NO_x$ emissions. The emission from shipping of off-road mobile sources (e.g., $24,922ton\;yr^{-1}$) was a major contributor to their total emissions, amounting to 47% of the total $NO_x$ emissions due to the port-related activities in Busan. For VOCs, the emission source category of solvent usage was predominant (e.g., $36,062ton\;yr^{-1}$), accounting for approximately 82% of the total VOC emissions. Out of solvent usages, the emission from painting was the most dominant ($22,733ton\;yr^{-1}$), comprising 52% of the total emissions from solvent usages. The most dominant VOC species emitted from their sources in Busan was toluene, followed by xylene, butane, ethylbenzene, n-butanol, isopropyl alcohol, and propane. The major emission sources of toluene and xylene were found to be painting of coil coating and ship building, respectively. The value of POCP for the off-road mobile source (61) was the highest in ten major activity sectors of VOC emissions. Since the POCP value of ship transport of off-road mobile source (72) was also high enough to affect ozone concentration, the ship emission can play a significant role in ozone production of the port city like Busan.

  • In this study, a lab-scale test was performed to apply the ozone process in drinking water treatment plant using dissolved ai, flotation(DAF). The kinetic study on the ozone decay and hydroxyl(OH) radical formation was investigated by several parameters, such as I.D(Instantaneous ozone demand), $k_c$(ozone decomposition rate), ozone-Ct and OH radical-Ct. Ozonation of several target waters, such as raw water, DAF treated water and filtrate, was conducted to select the optimum position and dosage of ozone process. The highest value of Ozone-Ct and OH radical-Ct was observed at DAF treated water at initial run time($0{\sim}30\;min$). From the results of ozonation, the intermediate ozonation was proposed as the optimum position and the effective dose of ozone was determined to be $1{\sim}2\;mg/L$.

  • Deposition to the sea surface is one of ozone's principal loss mechanisms (Galbally and Roy, 1980; Levy et al., 1985; Kramm, 1995). However, since complicated physical and chemical processes are involved, large uncertainties remain in evaluating this loss mechanism that need to be better characterized. In this study we attempted to explore possible causes that give rise to large variability of ozone deposition velocity in terms of wind speed and chemical reactivity in the aqueous-phase film. • Ozone sensitivity of physiological indicators and the difference of ozone tolerance on 4 families of Quercus aliena seedlings were investigated on the basis of the standardized physiological indicators. Photosynthetic parameters, photosynthetic pigment and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and antioxidative enzyme activities were measured or analyzed from the leaves of Q. aliena seedlings at the end of ozone fumigation, and ozone tolerance indices among 4 families were calculated with the standardized physiological parameters. After ozone treatment, the reduction of carboxylation efficiency was observed in the leaves of four families, and their reduction were ranged from -24.1% to -56.9% of control seedlings. Photosynthetic pigment content differed significantly among 4 families and treatments. The reduction of total chlorophyll content showed the highest in family SU4 (-40.6%) and the lowest family US2 (-18.8%). Ascorbate-peroxidase (APX) activity showed significant difference among families and treatments, and increased as compared with control in three families, except for family US2. On the basis of the physiological indices, ozone tolerance of four families was ranked in the order of US1 > SU4 > US2 > SU1. In conclusion, photosynthetic parameters, pigment content and APX activity were recommended as appropriate indicators to assess the tolerance against ozone stress of Q. aliena.

  • The comparative effects of gamma irradiation an ozone treatment on the microbiological and physicochemical qualities were investigated for the improvement of hygienic quality of aloe powder and bee pollen. Gamma irradiation at 7.5~10kGy could reduce total aerobic bacteria, molds and coliforms below detection levels, but ozone treatment up to 18 ppm for 8hr was not sufficient to eliminate the microorganisms from aloe powder and bee pollen. The physicochemical properties such as fatty acid an amino acid compositions, mineral content, TBA value, barbaloin and pigment contents were not significantly changed by gamma irradiation, whereas ozone treatment caused significant changes in fatty acid composition, lipid oxidation and destruction of barbaloin and natural pigments.

  • we have been studied on the realization of the boundary layer controlled ozone process and related facilities in order to apply for the photo-resist strip process in the semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing. By means of developing the technology for the high concentration ozone production, it was possible to realized the boundary layer control ozone process by vapor. As a result of the silicon wafer PR strip test, we obtained the strip rate of about 400nm/min at the ozone concentration of 16wt% and flow rate of 8[liter/min.].

  • In this study, we examined the effect of NO addition on the ozone-induced soot oxidation activity of $LaMnO_3$ perovskite catalysts. The addition of 10~20% NO ($NO_2$) with respect to the concentration of ozone effectively enhanced the rate of ozone-induced soot oxidation rate over $LaMnO_3$. However, the excessive addition of NO ($NO_2$) was detrimental to ozone-induced soot oxidation activity. It is supposed nitrogen oxides would adsorb on the catalyst and then react with carbon-oxygen species developed on soot surface, but an excessive addition of nitrogen oxide would inhibit the formation of carbon-oxygen species, which is a key intermediate in the reaction, and consequently suppress the oxidation rate of soot.

  • Rapid industrialization and a significant population growth has led to an increased use of chemicals, which has limited the biological processes that account for most of the existing water and wastewater treatment methods. Ozone microbubble technology, which is one of advanced oxidation processes, has recently attracted attention as a method to solve these issues. In this paper, we reviewed both the physical and the chemical characteristics of microbubbles, and evaluated microbubble-based ozone oxidation processes focusing on the removal of various toxic contaminants. In addition, we discussed the potential of an ozone microbubble process as water and wastewater treatment processes by combining it with other treatment technologies.
