  • Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide and manganese (II,III) oxide can be synthesized by the freeze-drying process of the mixed colloidal suspension of graphene oxide and manganese oxide, and the subsequent heat-treatment. The calcined reduced graphene oxide-manganese (II,III) oxide nanocomposites are X-ray amorphous, suggesting the formation of homogeneous and disordered mixture without any phase separation. The reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide upon the heat-treatment is evidenced by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy. Field emission-scanning electronic microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry clearly demonstrate the formation of porous structure by the house-of-cards type stacking of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and the homogeneous distribution of manganese ions in the nanocomposites. According to Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, manganese ions in the calcined nanocomposites are stabilized in octahedral symmetry with mixed Mn oxidation state of Mn(II)/Mn(III). The present reduced graphene oxide-manganese oxide nanocomposites show characteristic pseudocapacitance behavior superior to the pristine manganese oxide, suggesting their applicability as electrode material for supercapacitors.

  • The reduction mechanism of the composite powders mixed with $WO_3$ and CuO has been studied by using thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray diffraction, and microstructure analyses. The composite powders were made by simple Turbula mixing, spray drying, and ball-milling in a stainless steel jar with the ball to powder ratio of 32 to 1 at 80 rpm for 1 h without process controlling agents. It is observed that all the oxide composite powders are converted to W-coated Cu composite powder after reducing treatment under hydrogen atmosphere. For the formation mechanism of W-coated Cu composite powder, the sequential reduction steps are proposed as follows: CuO contained in the ball-milled composite powder is initially reduced to Cu at the temperature range from 20$0^{\circ}C$ to 30$0^{\circ}C$. Then, $WO_3$ powder is reduced to W $O_2$ via W $O_{2.9}$ and W $O_{2.72}$ at higher temperature region. Finally, the gaseous phase of $WO_3(OH)_2$ formed by reaction of $WO_2$ with water vapour migrates to previously reduced Cu and deposits on it as W reduced by hydrogen. The proposed mechanism has been proved through the model experiment which was performed by using Cu plate and $WO_3$ powder.

  • The effect of lithium chloride on the borane reduction of organic compounds was studied for three ketones, seven acid derivatives, three epoxides and cyclohexene in tetrahydrofuran at $0^{\circ}$. When compared with borane itself, borane-lithium chloride system enhanced the rates of reductions markedly of 2-heptanone, acetophenone, benzoyl chloride, phthalic anhydride, and three epoxides, whereas the reductions of benzophenone, four esters and cyclohexene showed little or no effect. $BH_3$-LiCl (1 : 0.1) reduced styrene oxide in 2 hr at $0^{\circ}$ to give 94.2 % yield of alcohols, 1-to 2-phenylethanol ratio being 60.8 to 39.2. And in the reduction of cyclohexene oxide, $BH_3$-LiCl (1 : 0.1) gave a quantitative yield of cyclohexanol in 2 hr at $0{\circ}$, however $BH_3$-LiCl (1 : 1) gave 58 % cyclohexanol and 42 % 2-chlorocyclohexanol. In the reduction of cyclohexene oxide, lithium nitrate showed no rate enhancement even when the salt was added in large excess. A formation of lithium chloroborohydride in the$BH_3$-LiCl system is suggested.

  • The redox property of oxide materials of the 3rd period transition metals(Cr~Zn), V, Mo, and W was studied with temperature-programmed reduction/temperature-programmed oxidation(TPR/TPO) experiment. The peak temperatures of TPO spectra were equal to or lower than those of TPR spectra. And the peak shapes of TPO spectra were broader than those of TPR ones. The activation energies of TPR/TPO for the oxides of the 3rd period transition metals showed in the range of 33~149 kJ/mol, while for the oxides of V, Mo, and W, they showed relatively higher values. The change of activation energies of TPR/TPO with various metal oxides showed a similar trend to the change of their metal-oxygen bond strengths. The change of activation energies of o-xylene oxidation for various metal oxides was proportional to the difference (${\Delta}E_a$) between the activation energy of TPR and that of TPO. From these results, we concluded that the oxidation of o-xylene over various metal oxide catalysts follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism including the surface reduction-oxidation of the metal oxide itself.

  • We examine the processing method of the food wastewater to direct spray at living waste incinerator. The demoscale stoker system is used as a incineration facility. The results show that it brings effect on the reduction of nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) concentration as well as the ammonia ($NH_3$) amount in SNCR (selective non-catalytic reduction) by the incineration of food wastewater which is containing a plentiful ammoniac nitrogen ($NH_3$-N). Furthermore, the stability of incineration facility and the extension of operation period is actualized as a improvement of clogging phenomenon on outer wall of water pipe as the 870~$950^{\circ}C$ maintain of exit temperature in a second combustor by spray of the food wastewater. The 26 items of air pollution matter of nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$), sulfur oxide ($SO_x$) and dioxin etc. are measured. The results show that it is under the value of allowable exhaust standard.

  • Nuclear energy is expected to meet the growing energy demand while avoiding CO2 emission. However, the problem of accumulating spent fuel from current nuclear power plants which is mainly composed of uranium oxides should be addressed. One of the most practical solutions is to reduce the spent oxide fuel and recycle it. Next-generation fuel cycles demand innovative features such as a reduction of the environmental load, improved safety, efficient recycling of resources, and feasible economics. Pyroprocessing based on molten salt electrolysis is one of the key technologies for reducing the amount of spent nuclear fuel and destroying toxic waste products, such as the long-life fission products. The oxide reduction process based on the electrochemical reduction in a LiCl-$Li_2O$ electrolyte has been developed for the volume reduction of PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) spent fuels and for providing metal feeds for the electrorefining process. To speed up the electrochemical reduction process, the influences of the feed form for the cathode and the type of anode shroud on the reduction rate were investigated.

  • One of the important phase of black titanium oxide is $Ti_4O_7$ which has the excellent properties such as the greatest electrical conductivity among the titanium oxides, chemical resistance against acidic and alkalic conditions and electro-wave absorption etc., so it has been considered as a promising material to be used widely all over the parts of industries. In this study, $Ti_4O_7$ phase was successfully synthesized by the reaction of TiO$_2$/ Mg system. With the change of the mole of TiO$_2$to Mg, the most excellent blackness was appeared in the 3.5 mole which was the smaller amount than the stoichiometric 4.0 mole. In addition, we found that the blackness decreased as the mole ratio of reactent increased. With decreasing particle size of magnesium, blackness of titanium oxide increased. The reaction property was changed with the compaction pressure, and optimum pressure was found to be 10 MPa. At 55$0^{\circ}C$ of reduction temperature, the blackness increased as the reaction time increased. The blackness of synthesized black titanium oxide was 14 to 18, and the average particle size was 0.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Smelting reduction technique in arc furnace was applied for the recovery of valuable metal such as V from LD slag. In the present study, the parameters for increasing the reduction rate and the reduction efficiency were selected by changing the oxide additives, melting temperature and basicity. The optimum condition for LD-slag reduction was achieved by $Al_2$$O_3$ addition. The reduction ratio of V was increased in increasing the basicity.

  • In order to provide the mechanism of nozzle clogging, recovered nozzles for high strength steel grade were examined carefully after continuous casting. The thickness of clogged material in SEN is increased in the following order: from the bottom to the top of the nozzle, upper part of slag line, and the pouring hole. Nozzle clogging material begins to form due the adhesion of metal to nozzle wall, the decarburization, and reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti in the melt. The reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti improves the wettability of the melt on the refractory and forms a thin Al-Ti-O layer. Metal containing micro alumina inclusions is solidified on the Al-Ti-O layer, and the solid layer grows due to the heat evolution through the nozzle wall. Thermodynamic calculation has been made for the related reactions. The effect of superheat to the nozzle clogging is discussed on ultra low carbon steel and low carbon steel.

  • This experimental study deals with on Nitric Oxide Formation & Reduction in Industrial Bunner. In this study, Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques have been used for quantitative measurements of Nitric Oxide. The NO A-X (0, 0) Vibrational band around 226 nm was excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. And on-line excitation used $P_{21}+Q_1(14.5)/R_{12}+Q_2(20.5)/P_1(23.5)$ transition, for minimizing the other interferential effect. The measurements were taken NO concentration distribution in double swirling diffusion flame. In this swirl burner, NO concentration in downstream fo the flame decrease as primary/secondary air ratio increases.
