The reduction of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability in the endothelium induces endothelial dysfunction, contributing to the development of hypertension. Although Lactobacillus consumption decreases blood pressure, intracellular signaling pathways related to hypertension have not been well elucidated. Thus, this study examined the effect of spray-dried Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K79 (LpK79) on NO production, intracellular signaling pathways, and inflammatory responses related to vascular function and hypertension. NO production was assessed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) treated with LpK79. Endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) and intracellular signaling molecules were determined using Western blot analysis. LpK79 dose-dependently increased NO production and activated eNOS via the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt signaling pathway HUVECs. Moreover, LpK79 mitigated the activation of crucial factors pivotal for vascular contraction in smooth muscle cells, such as phospholipase Cγ, myosin phosphatase target subunit 1, and Rho-associated kinase 2. When HUVECs were treated with LpL79 in the presence of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS), LpK79 effectively suppressed mRNA and protein expression of pro-inflammatory mediators induced by E. coli LPS. These results suggest that LpK79 provided a beneficial effect on the regulation of vascular endothelial function.

The electrochemically active site of mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC) as a cathode material is restricted to the triple phase boundary in protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) due to the insufficient of proton-conducting properties of MIEC. This study primarily focused on expanding the electrochemically active site by La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ(LSCF6428)-BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb4411) composite cathode. The electrochemical properties of the composite cathode were evaluated using anode-supported PCFC single cells. In comparison to the LSCF6428 cathode, the peak power density of the LSCF6428-BZCYYb4411 composite cathode is much enhanced by the reduction in both ohmic and non-ohmic resistance, possibly due to the increased electrochemically active site.

Biochar is a carbon-rich solid product obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass. It has been suggested to mitigate climate change through increased carbon storage and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soil after various biochars addition. The biochars were produced by pyrolysing pear branch, rice hull and bean straw at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. The treatments were consisted of a control without input of biochar and three type biochars input as 5.0 Mg/ha. Emissions of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ from upland soil were determined using closed chamber for 8 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature. It was shown that the cumulative $CO_2$ were 207.1 to $255.2g\;CO_2/m^2$ for biochar input treatments and $258.6g\;CO_2/m^2$ for the control after experimental periods. The cumulative $CO_2$ emission was slightly decreased in biochar input treatment compared to the control. It was appeared that cumulative $N_2O$ emissions were $2,890.6mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for control, 379.7 to $525.2mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for biochar input treatment at the end of experiment. All biochar treatments were found to significantly reduce $N_2O$ emission by 82~87%. Consequently the biochar from byproducts such as pear branch, rice hull and bean straw could suppress the soil $N_2O$ emission. The results from the study imply that biochar can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the upland field.

$H_2$ production by chemical looping is an efficient method to convert hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen with the simultaneous capture of concentrated $CO_2$. This process involves the use of an iron based oxygen carrier that transfers pure oxygen from oxidizing gases to fuels by alternating reduction and oxidation (redox) reactions. The enhanced reactivities of copper oxide doped iron-based oxygen carrier were reported, however, the fundamental understandings on the interaction between $Fe_2O_3$ and CuO are still lacking. In this study, we studied the effect of dopant of CuO to $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle on the morphological changes and the associated reactivity using various methods such as SEM/EDX, XRD, BET, TPR, XPS, and TGA. It was found that copper oxide acted as a chemical promoter that change chemical environment in the iron based oxygen carrier as well as a structural promoter which inhibit the agglomeration. The enhanced reduction reactivity was mainly ascribed to the increase in concentration of $Fe^{2+}$ on the surface, resulting in formation of charge imbalance and oxygen vacancies. The CuO doped $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle also showed the improved reactivity in the steam oxidation compared to $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle probably due to acting as a structural promoter inhibiting the agglomeration of iron species.

Nitrogen oxides ($NO_X$) was emitted from flue gas of stationary sources and exhaust gas of mobile sources, can leads to various environments problems. Selective Catalysts Reduction (SCR) is the most effective $NO_X$ removal system. Commercial $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts, usually containing $V_2O_5$ 0.5~3 wt%, $WO_3$ 5~10 wt%, and $V_2O_5$ is active in the reduction of $NO_X$ but also in the desired oxidation of $SO_2$ to $SO_3$. To reduce the amount of vanadium, using graphene matrix supported vanadium to synthesize nanocomposite. Then, we fabricated to 1 inch honeycomb type of SCR catalysts adding graphene-vanadium nanocomposite. The chemical-physical characteristics and the catalytic activity were performed by XRD, XRF, BET and Micro-Reactor (MR). As a result, the De-NOX performance was showed, similar to the commercial catalyst activity as 77.8 % and using nanocomposite catalyst as 77.1 % at $350^{\circ}C$.

The ozone injection method was proposed to improve the catalytic process for the removal of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$). Nitric oxide (NO) in the exhaust gas was first oxidized to nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) by ozone produced by dielectric barrier discharge, and then the exhaust gas containing the mixture of NO and $NO_2$ was directed to the catalytic reactor where both NO and $NO_2$ were reduced to $N_2$ in the presence of ammonia as the reducing agent. A commercially available $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst was used as the catalytic reactor. The $NO_2$ content in the mixture of NO and $NO_2$ was changed by the amount of ozone added the exhaust gas. The effect of reaction temperature, initial $NO_x$ concentration, feed gas flow rate, and ammonia concentration on the removal of $NO_x$ at various $NO_2$ contents was examined and discussed. The increase in the content of $NO_2$ by the ozone injection remarkably improved the performance of the catalytic reactor, especially at low temperatures. The present ozone injection method appears to be promising for the improvement of the catalytic reduction of $NO_x$.
Fructose-1, 6-diphosphate (FOP), a glycolytic metabolite is reported to ameliorate inflammation and inhibit the nitric oxide production in murine macrophages stimulated with endotoxin. It is also reported that FOP has cytoprotective effects against hypoxia or ischemia/reperfusion injury in brain and heart. In this study, we examined whether FDP has protective effects on UV-induced oxidative damage in skin cell culture system and human skin in vivo. FDP had a protective role in UVB-induced LDH release and ROS accumulation in HaCaT although it did not show direct radical scavenging effect in the experiment using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). FDP also preserved cellular GSH content after UV irradiation in HaCaT and normal human fibroblast culture system. Cellular oxidative stress induces multiple downstream signaling pathways that regulate expression of multiple gene including MMP-1 and collagen, we examined the effects of FDP on UV-induced alteration of these protein expression in fibroblast culture and human skin in vivo. The increased MMP-1 expression in fibroblast and human skin by UV irradiation was significantly decreased by FDP. FDP also prevented the UV-induced decrease of collagen expression in fibroblast and human skin. Moreover, the decreasing the intracellular levels of reducing equivalents in human fibroblast by glutathione (GSH) depletion lowered the UVA dose threshold for reduction of procollagen expression, indicating that the differences of glutathione contents define the susceptibility of fibroblasts towards UV-induced reduction of procollagen expression. FDP also preserved cellular GSH content after UV irradiation, indicating that FDP has protective effects on UV-induced reduction of procollagen expression, which are possibly through maintaining intracellular reducing equivalent. Based on these premises, we examined the effect of daily use of a moisturizer containing FDP on facial wrinkle in comparison with vehicle moisturizer lacking FDP. In the clinical study, FDP significantly decreased facial wrinkle compared with vehicle alone after 6 months of use. Our results suggest that FDP has anti-aging effects in skin by increasing cellular antioxidant system and preventing oxidative signal and inflammatory reaction. Therefore FDP may be useful anti-aging agent for cosmetic purpose.
The reaction of methanol-water mixture to $CO_2$ and $H_2$ on alkaline earth metal-copper-zinc oxide has been studied in the temperature range of 150 ${\sim}\;300^{\circ}C$. Generally the addition of the alkaline earth metal to Cu/ZnO resulted in an enhancement of selectivity for $CO_2$ formation and a reduction of catalytic activity. Measurable activities were found from 150$^{\circ}C$, 200$^{\circ}C$, and 250$^{\circ}C$ on Mg/Cu/ZnO, Ca/Cu/ZnO, and Ba/Cu/ZnO respectively. However, the highest selectivity for $CO_2$ formation was observed in Ba/Cu/ZnO catalyst at 250$^{\circ}C$. The effect of alkaline earth metal or ZnO on the reactivity was investigated using temperature programmed desorption of $CO_2$ or temperature programmed reduction with $H_2$ over catalysts respectively. It was found that $CO_2$ interacts more strongly in the sequence of MgO < CaO < BaO and ZnO decereases the reduction temperature of CuO. From the results, it was suggested that ZnO activates $H_2$ in the redox process of Cu component and alkaline earth metals adsorbs $CO_2$ in the catalytic process.

Natural gas is a clean fuel that discharges almost no air-contaminating substances. This study examined the simultaneous reduction of $CH_4$ and NOx of NGOC/LNT catalysts for CNG buses related to the improvement of the $de-CH_4/NOx$ performance, focusing mainly on identifying the additive catalysts, loading of the washcoat, stirring time, and types of substrates. The 3wt. % Ni-loaded NGOC generally exhibited superior $CH_4$ reduction performance through $CH_4$ conversion, because Ni is an alkaline, toxic oxide, and exerts a reducing effect on $CH_4$. A excessively small loading resulted in insufficient adsorption capacity of harmful gases, whereasa too high loading of washcoat caused clogging of the substrate cells. In addition, with the economic feasibility of catalysts considered, the appropriate amount of catalyst washcoat loading was estimated to be 124g/L. The NOx conversion rate of the NGOC/LNT catalysts stirred from $200^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours showed 10-15% better performance than the NGOC/LNT catalysts mixed for 2 hours over the entire temperature range. The NGOC/LNT catalysts exhibitedapproximately 20% higher $de-CH_4$ performance on the ceramic substrates than on the metal substrates.
