Determination of Nutritious Calcium in Some Vegetables

  • Vegetables contain more or less calcium. By the traditional method the total calcium in the vegetable was analyzed. A part or calcium in the vegetable is fixed as calcium oxalate and the calcium does not utilize for nutrition. In this investigation the free calcium was determined by extraction in boiling water, the combined calcium with oxalic acid was determined by extraction in 0.1 M hydrochloric aci and the other calcium combined with protein, amino acid etc. was estimated. The amount of calcium obtained from the difference between the total calcium and calcium exmtaining in calcium oxalate was estimated to be nutritious.

Relations between Brown Planthopper (BPH) Resistance and Sucking Inhibitors of BPH in Rice

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relations between brown planthopper (BPH, Nilapavata lugens) resistance and specific organic acids (oxalic acid, silicic acid, and trans-aconitic acid) known as BPH sucking inhibitors on different rice varieties and/or lines. There were no specific relations between BPH resistance and the contents of oxalic and silicic acids in the rice plant tissues. However, the stronger the BPH resistance was occurred, the higher the content of trans-aconitic acid was contained in the rice plants. The relations between the injury rate of rice plant by BPH and the content of trans-aconitic acid in the rice plants were negatively correlated, which were -0.84 and -0.82 at 30 and 60 days after seeding, respectively. Therefore, the content of trans-aconitic acid in rice plant tissues might be utilized as an index for improving BPH resistance of rice varieties.

Remediation of Copper-Contaminated Soil using Low Molecular Weight Organic Acid Flushing Technique (저분자량 유기산 세척을 이용한 오염토양으로부터의 Cu제거에 관한 연구)

  • For successful soil flushing process selection of appropriate flushing reagents is essential. Futhermore, obtaining operating parameters for site remediation application through various bench-scale tests is also important. In this research a series of organic acids (acetic, citric, oxalic, and succinic acids) were tested for flushing capability. Copper-contaminated natural soil was used as a test medium, and flushing experiments were performed with batch system. All the organic acids used did not provide effective flushing conditions at concentration of 1 mM. At the acid concentration of 50 and 100 mM copper was removed efficiently although 50 and 100 mM did not show any significant differences in removal efficiencies. Citric acid and oxalic acid removed copper more efficiently than the others, and especially, citric acid showed over 87% of removal efficiency of copper at near neutral pH of 5 to 7. Speciation of extracted copper using GEOCHEM simulation showed majority of extracted copper existed as complexed with organic acids and only small portion of organic acids were complexed with copper indicating promising application of soil flushing with organic acid to heavy metal-contaminated site remediation.

Anti-Icing Characteristics of Aluminum 6061 Alloys According to Surface Nanostructure (알루미늄 6061 합금의 표면 나노 구조물 변화에 따른 방빙 특성 연구)

  • Recently, aluminum 6061 instead of copper alloy is used for cooling heat exchangers used in the internal combustion of engines due to its economic feasibility, lightweight, and excellent thermal conductivity. In this study, aluminum 6061 alloy was anodized with oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, or chromic acid as an anodizing electrolyte at the same concentration of 0.3 M. After the third anodization, FDTS, a material with low surface energy, was coated to compare hydrophobic properties and anti-icing characteristics. Aluminum was converted into an anodization film after anodization on the surface, which was confirmed through Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Pore distance, interpore distance, anodization film thickness, and solid fraction were measured with a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). For anti-icing, hydrophobic surfaces were anodized with oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, or chromic acid solution. The sample anodized in oxalic acid had the lowest solid fraction. It had the highest contact angle for water droplets and the lowest contact hysteresis angle. The anti-icing contact angle showed a tendency to decrease for specimens in all solutions.

  • 150 nm thick Ga-doped ZnO thin film, which was deposited by a sputtering process, was wet-chemically etched by using various organic acids such as oxalic, citric and formic acid. Wet etch parameters including etchant concentration and temperature are investigated for each etchant, and their effects on the etch rate and the feature of edge line are compared.

  • This study was carried out to examine physicochemical characteristics of three kinds of commercial spinach produced from three areas(Gyeongbuk Yeongdeok Younghea, Gyeongnam Tongyeong Yongnam, Gyeongnam Tongyeong Gwangdo) in autumn of 2004. The length, weight, moisture, minerals, oxalic acid, chlorophyll, vitamin C, and Hunter's color values of spinach leaves and stem; were determined. Mg, Ca, Na, K, chlorophyll, and vitamin C contents of leaves were higher than those of stems. On the other hand, stem; showed higher contents in Fe, P and oxalic acid Moisture, Mg, Na, Fe, chlorophyll, and vitamin C contents in the spinach leaves from Gwangdo were higher than those from Yongnam and Younghea, but oxalic acid lower a little.

  • Copper oxide, CuO, are very important components include of high temperature super- conductors, and widely used. The properties of sintered materials were affected by the size and shape of copper oxide with starting materials in the solid-phase reaction. A homogeneous and fine CuO powder was prepared by thermal decomposition of the copper oxalate precursor. Copper oxalate was precipitated by the addition of copper nitrate solution to an oxalic acid solution. The influence of various factors such as temperature, pH, concentration as well as ultrasonic irradiation in the solution were investigated.

질소강화 type 304L stainless steel 의 예민화 저항성 평가

  • 본 연구에서는 정량적 전기화학 시험법인 DL-EPR test 와 ASTM 에 규정된 screening test 인 oxalic acid etch test 를 통해 질소강화 type 304L stainless steel 의 예민화 저항성을 평가하고, 두 시험법의 결과 사이의 상관관계를 알아보며, 질소함량이 예민화 저항성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하고자 하였다. 실험결과 일정수준에서 질소함량이 증가할수록 예민화가 지연되는 경향을 볼 수 있었고, 이런 현상은 두 시험법의 결과에서 공히 나타났다. 또한 DL-EPR test 와 oxalic acid etch test 간의 상관관계가 비례적으로 나타났으며, 각 oxalic acid etch 조직에 해당하는 DL-EPR test 결과값 (Ir/Ia) 을 얻을 수 있었다.

Formation and Control of Dual Porous Structures of Metal by an Electrochemical Method (전기화학적 방법을 통한 금속 이중기공구조 형성 및 제어)

  • Dual porous structures are observed for the first time on a metallic Cu surface underneath anodic Cu oxide by the application of an anodizing voltage to Cu in oxalic acid. The as-prepared porous Cu surface contains macropores of less than $1{\mu}m$ diameter and mesopores of about tens of nanometers diameter with circular shapes. The size and density (number of pores/area) of the macropores are dependent on the applied voltage. It is likely that the localized dissolution (corrosion) of Cu in oxalic acid under the anodizing voltages is responsible for the formation of the mesopores, and the combination of a number of the mesopores might create the macropores, especially under a relatively high anodizing voltages or a prolonged anodizing time. The variations of pore structure (especailly macropores) with applied voltage and time are reasonably explained on the basis of the proposed mechanism of pore formation.

  • A survey of the free amino acids and organic acids in the shoot of Phyllostachys edulis was made by means of amino acid autoanalyzer and gas chromatograph. The results of the survey are summerized as follows. 1. Eighteen amino acids found in bamboo shoot were lysine, histidine, arginine, tryptophan, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, threonine, serine, proline, glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, tyrosine and phenylalanine, and an unknown was found. Serine showed the highest amount and more than about 44% of total free amino acids. 2. Oxalic acid was the major organic acid, and formic acid, acetic acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and sorbic acid were determined, and two unknown were found.
