  • A new cluster validity index is proposed that determines the optimal partition and optimal number of clusters for fuzzy partitions obtained from the fuzzy c-means algorithm. The proposed validity index exploits an overlap measure and a separation measure between clusters. The overlap measure is obtained by computing an inter-cluster overlap. The separation measure is obtained by computing a distance between fuzzy clusters. A good fuzzy partition is expected to have a low degree of overlap and a larger separation distance. Testing of the proposed index and nine previously formulated indexes on well-known data sets showed the superior effectiveness and reliability of the proposed index in comparison to other indexes.

  • Study on the feasibility assessment for applying the overlap grid method to numerical calculations on the ground effect has been performed. The objective of the present study is to settle the problem in the grid generation process. A low Mach number preconditioned turbulent flow solver using the overlap grid and the multi-block grid methods has been developed and applied to the ground effect simulation around the RAE 101 airfoil. It has been verified that the overlap grid method not only can provide sufficiently accurate solutions but also work out the grid generation problem in the ground effect simulations.

  • The objectives of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics of single spray and twin spray in the overlap region such as mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity, mean droplet size and probability density function of droplet size. A phase doppler anemometer was used as the measurement system for droplet size and velocity. In case of single spray, injection pressure was varied from 0.2MPa to 0.7MPa. Mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity and droplet size were decreased as the distance below nozzle tip was increased. In case of twin spray, the spray characteristics were measured by varying the distance between two nozzles from 127mm to 155mm. In the overlap region, the boundary of the overlap region was determined by obtaining the distribution of mean axial and radial velocity. Droplet size was increased as the distance from nozzle tip was increased. It was found that the distribution of droplet size for twin spray in the overlap region was different to single spray.

  • Recently, a variable valve timing system has been widely adopted in internal combustion engine in order to improve the fuel economy and torque at low engine speed. In addition, it is known that varying valve timing according to the various engine operations could reduce exhaust gas, especially NOx, because of residual gas by valve overlap. In this study, to improve the low exhaust gas and fuel economy at part load condition, the residual gas and back flow of exhaust gas due to valve overlap were calculated computationally. Moreover, the characteristics of engine performances and NOx formations were investigated with the experiment of combination of intake and exhaust valve timing condition. Under these various valve operating conditions, the effects of both the positive valve overlap and negative valve overlap(valve underlap) were examined simultaneously. Finally, the characteristics of cyclic THC emission were analyzed by using Fast Response FID(FR-FID) in the cylinder, intake port and exhaust port positions. Besides, the effect of the different gradients of the valve timing change on engine performance was investigated and an optimum control strategy was suggested.

  • A rotor overlap technique was adapted to improve the performance of a axial turbine. The technique secured sufficient flow passage by additional height at the rotor tip and hub. especially in a supersonic turbine, the technique reduced the chance of chocking in the rotor passage, and made to be satisfied the design pressure ratio. However, the technique also made additional losses, like a pumping loss, expansion loss, etc. Therefore, a optimization technique was appled to maximize the improvement of the turbine performance. An approximate optimization method was used for the investigation to secure the computational efficiency. The design variables was shape factors of a rotor overlap. Results indicated that a significant improvement in turbine performance can be achieved through the optimization of the rotor overlap.

  • A study on the interference effects of overlapping tandem rotors in forward flight is conducted using the time-marching free-wake panel method which adopts field velocity boundary integral formulation. The conventional boundary integral formulation is numerically unstable for the cases when the blade and the wake are in close proximity to each other. In order to avoid this problem, this study applies the field velocity method and modifies the boundary integration formulation. The improved method is used for the parametric study on the advance ratio and the distance between the rotors. These are the parameters that most affect the interference of the tandem rotor in forward flight. Comparison of the aerodynamic performance shows that the horizontal distance between the rotors negligibly influences the overlap-induced power factor for high advance ratio. In addition, it shows that the overlap-induced power factor is inversely proportional to the squared vertical distance between the rotors, and that the overlap-induced power factor increases to a certain extent and decrease back as the advance ratio increases.

  • A variable electromotive-force generator (VEG), which is a modified generator with an adjustable overlap between the rotor and the stator, is proposed to expand the operational range of a regular generator through a simple and robust active control strategy. It has a broad range of applications in hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, water turbines, and similar technologies. A mathematical model of the VEG is developed, and a novel prototype is designed and fabricated. The performance of the VEG with an active control system, which adjusts the overlap ratio based on the desired output power at different rotor speeds for a specific application, is theoretically and experimentally studied. The results show that reducing the overlap between the rotor and the stator of the generator results in reduced torque loss of the generator and an increased rotational speed of the generator rotor. A VEG can improve the fuel efficiency of hybrid vehicles; it can also expand operational ranges of wind turbines and water turbines and harness more power.

  • In this study, a new RF method to extract the drain-source voltage Vds-dependent gate-bulk capacitance of deep-submicron MOSFETs is developed by determining Vds-independent gate-source overlap capacitance using measured S-parameters. The accuracy of extraction method is verified by observing good agreements between the measured and modeled S-parameters. The lateral channel doping profile in the drain region is experimentally measured using a Vds-dependent curve of the overlap and depletion length obtained from the extracted data.

  • Present study was conducted numerical analysis for velocity compound supersonic impulse turbine with the rotor overlaps, and the performance characteristics were analyzed through the numerical results. Tip overlap was more effective than hub overlap through the analysis. a case, overlap applied the hub and tip of the rotor, has the largest improvement for the turbine performance in parametric study cases. In case of overlap for the 2nd stage rotor, however, improvement of the turbine performance was not visibly large. Because, power generated in the 2nd stage was 22~23% of whole generated turbine power.

  • Overlap Errors and side-lobes have been simultaneously solved by the rule-based correction using the rules extracted from test patterns. Lithography process parameters affecting attPSM lithography process have been determined by the fitting method to the real process data. The correction using scattering bars has been compared to the Cr shield method. The optimal insertion rule of the scattering bal's has made it possible to suppress the side-lobes and to enhance DOF at the same time. Therefore, in this paper, the solution to both side-lobe and overlap Error has been proposed using rule-based confection. Compared to the existing Cr shield method, the proposed rule-based correction with scattering bars can reduce the process complexity and time for mask production.
