  • Borosilicate, $B_2O_3$ and BN derived from liquid precursors have been tested as shielding materials for the long period of oxidation resistance of C/BN composites at $650^{\circ}C$. Borosilicate coating displayed excellent oxidation resistance and low moisture absorbance, while $B_2O_3$ and BN were less effective in elevating the oxidation resistance. The enhancement of the oxidation resistance was explained as self-healing effect by viscous flow of the borosilicate glass over Tg, resulting in the reduction of the exposed carbon fibers in a BN matrix.

  • SL(Stereolithogrphy) part is made by piling up thin layers which causes the stair stepping effect at the surface of SL parts. This effect causes excessive surface roughness and requires additional postprocess finishing such as abrasive basting which is detrimental to part geometry and time consuming. Hence paraffin coating and grinding postprocess is proposed to raise the surface quality of SL part. The paraffin which has suitable properties for the proposed postprocess is coated all over the part surface. By grinding the thin layer of coated on the SL part only, the surface roughness can be improved without any damage on the part. From the experimental result, It is verified as very practical for die casting with silicon rubber mold.

  • This research was done for possible treatment of impermeable surfaces rainwater runoff containing heavy metal ions by manganese oxide coated on polypropylene support. Manganese oxide was coated by Birnessite Coating Methods(BCM)and the coating analyzed by SEM and FT-IR techniques. The efficiency of heavy metal ions adsorption was also assessed via both batch and column tests. Adsorption efficiencies of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb were 99.4%, 98.9%, 96.7%, and over 95.7%, respectively. The adsorption progress pattern reveals quite fast adsorption at initial periods of treatment and change to slower rates at later times.

  • The application of Carbon and graphite based materials in unprotected environment is limited to a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ or so because of their susceptibility to oxidation at this temperature and higher. To over come these obstacles a low cost chemical vapour reaction process (CVR) was developed to give crystalline and high purity SiC coating on graphite and isotropic C/C composite. CVR is most effective carbothermal reduction method for conversation of a few micron of carbon layer to SiC. In the CVR method, a sic conversation layer is formed by reaction between carbon and gaseous reagent silicon monoxide at high temperature. Characterization of SiC coating was carried out using SEM. The other properties studied were hardness density and conversion efficiency.

  • Gas wiping process of continuously hot-dip galvanized coating on steel strip has noise and coating problems. To improve the qualify of product, characteristics of air flow on the steel surface must be investigated. In this paper, fluid dynamic model of the gas flow is setup and solved numerically using STAR-CD. The effects of edge baffle, distance between steel plane edge and baffle, inlet pressure, and gap between air knife and strip steel surface are investigated, and it is concluded that edge baffle can reduce over-coating and edge built-up.

  • The erosion characteristice of plasma-sprayed tungsten carbide chromium carbide coatings were investigated. Erosion tests were perfomed at room temperature by using Al2O3 and SiC particles accleerated in air stream. Weight losses of the coatings were measured over a range of paricle velocities and impingement angle. It was found that, for both of this coatings, the maximum erosion occurrd at a normal angle of impact, and the erosion rate at this impact angle was a power function of pparticle velocity. The values of the velocty emponent were between 3.07 and 3.50 Erosion value of chromium carbide coating was higher than that of tungsten carbide coating.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) nanopowders were synthesized by coprecipitation and the sol-gel method to prepare a stable dispersion of ITO nano-colloid for antistatic coating of a display panel. The colloidal dispersions were prepared by attrition process with a vibratory milling apparatus using a suitable dispersant in organic solvent. The ITO coating solution was spin-coated on a glass panel followed by the deposition of partially hydrolyzed alkyl silicate as an over-coat layer. The double-layered coating films were characterized by measuring the sheet resistance and reflectance spectrum for antistatic and antireflective properties.

  • Many Korean industrial plants including nuclear and fossil power plants use seawater as the ultimate heat sink to cool the heat generated by various facilities. Owing to the high corrosivity of seawater, facilities and piping made of metal material in contact with seawater are coated or lined with polymeric materials to avoid direct contact with seawater. However, polymeric materials used as coating and lining have some level of permeability to water and are degraded over time. Korean industrial plants have also experienced a gradual increase in the frequency of damage to pipes in seawater systems due to prolonged operating periods. In the event of a cavitation-like phenomenon, coating or lining inside the piping is likely to be damaged faster than expected. In this paper, the cause of water leakage due to base metal damage caused by the failure of the polyester lining in seawater system piping was assessed and the experience with establishing countermeasures to prevent such damage was described.

  • Iron-coated sand(ICS) was prepared with variation of particle size of Joomoonjin sand, primary and secondary coating temperature, coating time, and dosage of initial Fe(III). An optimum condition of the preparation ICS was selected from the coating efficiency, stability of coated Fe(III), and removal efficiency of As(V). Coated amount of Fe(III) increased as primary coating temperature increased with smaller particle size of sand. Coating efficiency was quite similar over the investigated secondary coating temperature and time, while adsorption efficiency of As(V) onto ICS was severely reduced with ICS prepared at higher secondary coating temperature. By considering these results, an optimum secondary coating temperature and time for the preparation of ICS was selected as $150^{\circ}C$ and 1-hr, respectively. Coating efficiency increased us the dosage of initial Fe(III) up to 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand and then no distinct increase was noted. Maximum As(V) adsorption was observed at 0.8 Fe(III) mol/kg sand. Secondary coating temperature and time were important parameters affecting stability of ICS, showing decreased dissolution of Fe(III) from ICS prepared at higher coating temperature and at longer coating time. From anionic type adsorption of As(V) onto ICS, it is possible to suggest the application of ICS for the removal of As(V) contaminated in acidic water system.

  • Wax spin coating is a part of several wafer handling processes in the silicon wafer polishing station. It is important to ensure the wax layer free of contamination to achieve the high degree of planarization on wafers after wafer polishing. Three-dimensional air flow characteristics in a wax spin coater are numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics techniques. When the bottom of the wax spin coater is closed, there exists a significant recirculation zone over the rotating ceramic block. This recirculation zone can be the source of wax layer contamination at any rotational speed and should be avoided to maintain high wafer polishing quality. Thus, four air suction ducts are installed at the bottom of the wax spin coater in order to control the air flow pattern over the ceramic block. Present computational results show that the air suction from the bottom is quite an effective method to remove or minimize the recirculation zone over the ceramic block and the wax coating layer.
