  • Purpose: Distraction osteogenesis is considered to take favorable effect on the TMJ and be beneficial to prevent the relapse after the mandibular advancement of Class II malocclusion patient. This is the report with literature review on the mandibular advancement in the patients showing preoperative condylar resorption and who need larger amount of advancement. Patients and method: Distraction osteogenesis using intraoral device was performed for three mandibular hypoplasia patients (one male and two females). All patients were adult over 18 years old. The patients showed condylar bony resorption preoperatively. The distraction was performed intraorally with modified SSRO. After 7 days of latency period, activation was performed at the rate of 1.0 mm/day with twice turn. The devices were removed after 4-8 month consolidation period. Results: Total advancement of mandible was average 13 mm. One patient showed openbite immediately after removal of distraction device. It took long time to guide the openbite with elastics. The comparison between cephalometries immediately after device removal and postoperative six month revealed average 3.4 mm relapse. This means that mandibular advancement with distraction osteogenesis needs overcorrection and elastic rehabilitation even after enough consolidation periods. Conclusion: Larger amount of mandibular advancement could be achieved with distraction osteogenesis in severe mandibular hypoplasia with condylar resorption. However, some relapse was found during the follow-up period and the over correction is considered to be needed. The effect of distraction osteogenesis seems to be investigated with long-term follow-up.

  • Village Renewal(Dorferneuerung) Policy Program in Germany, directly originated from Rural Beutification Movement between mid 18C and mid 19C, has several characteristics as follows. First, we can find out the planned approach in land use and settlement reorganization of Pillage Renewal Program. There are three ways to designate the planning area of the village rearrangement project in countryside. One is to designate the detailed B-plan district by urban plan for the village over some size defined legally. Another is to have a living space of settlement be contained in land allotment project area. In this case, residential areas of several villages related to agricultural land consolidation should be simultaneously designated as the project area. The last is only for the built environment focused on the living space. Second, the emphasis in German village encouragement program can be made on the integral approach through which sets of policy programs of the land allotment, the living environment improvement, the physical landscape management and the cultural resources conservation are intensively implemented together. Third, the bottom-up and community participation approach can be greatly stressed on the planning and implementation process, Community participation, subsidy application to local government by residents themselves, community consensus on architectural style and outdoor spatial form, etc. have been recognized as an effective strategy to accomplish the task of village activity promotion.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to estimate the demand for clinical trials and contribute to the consolidation of function and role in the clinical trial centers of oriental medicine. Methods: A survey of the demand was made of 379 faculties of oriental medicine in 11 oriental medical colleges throughout the country using two?part investigations by e-mail questionnaire over 1 month. The final data from 56 faculties were analyzed. Results: Clinical trials of oriental medicine have been continuously increasing. Furthermore, the demand and necessity for clinical trials of oriental medicine have also been continuously enhanced. Although there were arguments for and against the establishment of a clinical trial center for oriental medicine, the demand and necessity for the establishment was the overall consensus. Concerning objections, a high intention of use was observed. Conclusions: These results imply that the demand for clinical trials will increase remarkably through the establishment of a clinical trial center for oriental medicine. Further study is needed about the demand for such a center.

  • The UNCITRAL, during its thirty-two session in 1999 discussed certain issues and problems identified in interactional commercial arbitration practice. The issues discussed include certain aspects if conciliation proceedings ; the legislative requirement of a written form for the arbitration agreement ; arbitability ; soverign immunity ; consolidation of more than one case into one arbitral proceedings ; confidentiality of information in arbitral proceedings ; rasing claims in arbitral proceedings for the purpose of set-off ; decisions by "turncated" arbitral tribunals liability of arbitrators ; power by the arbitral tribunal to award interest ; costs of arbitral proceedings ; enforceability of interim measures of protection ; and discretion to enforce an award that has been set aside in the state of origin. Among those issues discussed, most of States agreed that the issues relating to certain aspects of conciliation proceedings ; the legislative requirement of a written form for the arbitration agreement ; enforceability of interim measures of protection ; and discretion to enforce an award that has been set aside in the State of origin should have priority over other issues. The UNCITRAL may wish to consider the desirability of preparing uniform provisions on any of those issues, possibly indicating whether further work should be towards a legislative text (such as a model legislative provision or a treaty) or a non-legislative text (such as a model contractual rule).

  • For the calculation of foundation settlement it is recommended to take into account so called influence zone inside the subsoil bellow the foundation structure. Influence zone inside the subsoil is the region where the load has a substantial influence on the deformation of the soil skeleton. The soil skeleton is pre-consolidated or over consolidated due to the original geostatic stress state. An excavation changes the original geostatic stress state and it creates the space for the load transferred from upper structure. The theory of elastic layer in Westergard manner is selected for the vertical stress calculation. The depth of influence zone is calculated from the equality of the original geostatic stress and the new geostatic stress due to excavation combined with the vertical stress from the upper structure. Two close formulas are presented for the influence zone calculation. Using ADINA code we carried out several numerical examples to verify the proposed analytical formulas and to enhance their use in civil engineering practice. Otherwise, the FEM code accuracy can be control.

  • In order to make clear relationship between high temperature tensile properties and fine microstructure of rapidly solidified cast-type Ni-base superalloys without heat treatment required for consolidation process, tensile test was carried out by changing strain rate from $5{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$ to $2{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$ and test temperature from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$ using IN738LC and Rene'80 melt-spinning ribbons by twin roll process which were superior to ribbons by single roll process from the viewpoint of structure homogeneity. The dependence of tensile strength on strain rate and test temperature was studied and strain rate sensitivity, m, were estimated from tensile test results. From this study, it was found that tensile strength was influenced by ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particle diameter, test temperature and strain rate, and m of ribbons exhibited above 0.3 over $950^{\circ}C$.

  • Gadolinia-doped ceria nanopowder was prepared by glycine-nitrate combustion method with different glycine/nitrate mixing ratio. The characteristics of the synthesized powder were investigated by X-ray diffraction method, transmission electron microscopy, thermal gravity, differential thermal analysis and thermo-mechanical analysis. The smallest powder was obtained with glycine/nitrate ratio 1.00 and the lowest organic and water vapor contained powder was made with glycine/nitrate ratio 1.75. According to dilatometry, fast densification was occurred around $1000^{\circ}C$ and shows full density over $1300^{\circ}C$. Finally near-fully dense ceria electrolyte was fabricated with conventional sintering technique. Glycine-nitrate process yields fine nanopowders which enable low temperature sintering and fabrication of fully dense and nanostructured oxide electrolyte.

  • Assessing the handling properties of coal becomes a major issue for the operation of a fuel supply system in power plants, due to the increased types of coal imported into Korea. In this study, the cohesion strengths of 13 bituminous and sub-bituminous coals from different countries were tested by measuring the amount of force that leads to a failure of consolidated particles. The particle size was in the range of 0.1-2.8 mm, which represents the coarse particles before pulverization. While the cohesion strength was proportional to the compression force in the tested range, the effects of the surface moisture content and the weight fraction of fines were crucial for cohesive coals. At fixed conditions of surface moisture and particle size, large variations were found in the cohesion propensity between coals. For coals of 0.1-0.5 mm with the moisture added close to the critical value, cohesive coals had the density over $900kg/m^3$ after consolidation. The cohesion propensity was not correlated with the basic properties of coals with sufficient statistical significance.

  • A total of 322 patients with endobronchial tuberculosis (8.1%) out of 3,982 subjects who had a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination at the Department of Pulmonary Medicine of Hanyang University Hospital between the beginning of March 1982 and the end of April 1996 were included in this study. The peak incidence occurred in the second decade, and the male to female was 1 : 3.0. The barking cough with variable amounts of sputum was the most common chief complaint in 56.9% of the 313 patients. Other complaints included dyspnea, chest pain, fever, hemoptysis, and generalized weakness. Localized wheeze was heard over the chest in 16.9% of the 313 patients. Infiltration/consolidation was the most common roentgenographic finding of the chest in 64.2%. Bronchoscopically, hypertrophy with luminal narrowing was the most common findings in 32.3% of the 322 patients and left main bronchus was the most frequently involved in 24.0%. Using fiberoptic bronchoscopy allows not only substantial meaningful assessment of endobronchial tuberculosis but also makes a differential diagnosis of lung cancer in older patients. We need further evaluations of standard bronchoscopic classification of endobronchial tuberculosis, diagnostic accuracy of endobronchial tuberculosis by PCR, a large prospective study of effects of corticosteroids in endobronchial tuberculosis patients, and appropriate treatment of atelectasis by endobronchial tuberculosis.

  • Stone columns (or granular column) have been used to increase the load carrying capacity and accelerating consolidation of soft soil. Recently, the geosynthetic reinforced stone column technique has been developed to improve the load carrying capacity of the stone column. In addition, reinforcement prevents the lateral squeezing of stone in to surrounding soft soil, helps in easy formation of stone column, preserve frictional properties of aggregate and drainage function of the stone column. This paper investigates the improvement of load carrying capacity of isolated ordinary and geotextile reinforced sand column through field load tests. Tests were performed with different reinforcement stiffness, diameter of sand column and reinforcement length. The results of field load test indicated an improved load carrying capacity of geotextile reinforced sand column over ordinary sand column. The increase in load carrying capacity depends upon the sand column diameter, stiffness of reinforcement and reinforcement length. Also, the partial reinforcement length about two to four time's sand column diameter from the top of the column was found to significant effect on the performance of sand column.
