  • The synthesis procedure of Marchand balun using planar coupled-line is presented. The design limitations of this type of balun have been described before its synthesis procedure. The balun has equi-ripple passband responses and balanced output without fourth balanced transmission line which is difficult to implement with conventional planar topology. As an example, 2:1 Marchand balun is designed and its momentum simulation result show good verification fur this methodology.

  • In this paper, the electrical and emission properties of electrodeless fluorescent lamp were discussed using the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) with the variation of argon gas pressure and RF power. The RF output was applied to the antenna in the range of 5∼50 W at 13.56 MHz. The internal plasma voltage of the chamber and the probe current were measured while varying the supply voltage to the Langmuir probe in the range of -100V∼+100V. When the pressure of argon gas was increased, electric current was decreased. There was a significant electric current increase from 10 to 30 W. Also, when the RF power was increased, electron density was increased. Also, the emission spectrum, Ar- I lins, luminance were investigated. At this time, the input parameter for ICP RF plasma, Ar gas pressure and RF power were applied in the range of 10∼60 mTorr, 10∼300 W, respectively. This implies that this method can be used to find an optimal RF power for efficient light illumination in an electrodeless fluorescent lamp.

  • In this paper, a new marchand balun using broadside-coupled coplanar waveguide(CPW) on flexible printed circuit (FPC) is proposed. The proposed balun is designed based on the coupled line theory. The fabricated balun shows compact size and improved performance compared to the conventional microstrip line marchand balun. Measured amplitude and phase imbalance between the two balanced output ports are within 0.2 dB and $1^{\circ}$ respectively in a wide frequency range($1.63{\sim}3.44$ GHz). The proposed balun is expected to be used between various antennas and RF front-ends as a functional interconnection.

  • The biodegradability and decomposition efficiencies increase with the pre-treatment of sludge in a digestion process. In this study, the feasibility of ultrasound coupled with potassium permanganate oxidation as a disintegration method and digestibility of aerobic reactor fed with disintegrated sludge with ultrasound coupled potassium permanganate were investigated. The first stage of the study focused on determining the optimum condition for ultrasonic pre-treatment for achieving better destruction efficiency of sludge. The second part of the study, the aerobic digestibility of sludge disintegrated with ultrasound and potassium permanganate oxidation alone and combined were examined comparatively. The results showed that when 20 min of ultrasonic pre-treatment applied, the specific energy output was 49384 kJ/kgTS with disintegration degree of 58.84%. During the operation of aerobic digester, VS/TS ratios of digesters fed with disintegrated sludge decreased indicating that disintegration methods could obviously enhance aerobic digestion performance. The highest reduction in volatile solids was 75% in the digester fed with ultrasound+potassium permanganate disintegrated sludge at the end of the operation compared to digester fed with raw sludge. Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP) levels in sludge supernatant increased with this combined method significantly. Besides, it promoted the production of ${\bullet}OH$, thus enhancing the release of Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) from the sludge. Disintegration with all methods used in this study could not improve Capillary Suction Time (CST) reduction in disintegrated digesters during the operation. The results demonstrated that the combined ultrasound treatment and potassium permanganate oxidation method improves the biodegradability compared to control reactor or their single application.

  • In this paper, V-band MMIC coupled oscillator arrays are presented. In the proposed array, two push-pull patch antennas are synchronized by using strong electromagnetic coupling between two antennas. As a result, total size of the array is reduced and the array can be integrated in a single chip. To verify proposed array concept, two 1$\times$2 arrays are designed and fabricated using standard 0.15 um gate length pHEMT MMIC process. The circuits are mounted in an oversized waveguide and measured. The first array shows 0.5 dBm at 56.372 GHz and the second one has an output of 5.85 dBm at 60.147 GHz.

  • Generally, a single phase H-bridge converter feeding a single primary track is employed in conventional inductive power transfer systems. However, these systems may not be suitable for some high power applications due to the constraints of the semiconductor switches and the cost. To resolve this problem, a novel dual coupled primary tracks IPT system consisting of two high frequency resonant inverters feeding the tracks is presented in this paper. The primary tracks are wound around an E-shape ferrite core in parallel which enhances the magnetic flux around the tracks. The mutual inductance of the coupled tracks is utilized to achieve adjustable power sharing between the inverters by configuring the additional resonant capacitors. The total transfer power can be continuously regulated by altering the pulse width of the inverters' output voltage with the phase shift control approach. In addition, the system's efficiency and the control strategy are provided to analyze the characteristic of the proposed IPT system. An experimental setup with total power of 1.4kW is employed to verify the proposed system under power ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 with a transfer efficiency up to 88.7%. The results verify the performance of the proposed system.

  • This paper presents a ripple-free input current modified interleaved boost converter for high step-up applications. By integrating dual coupled inductors and voltage multiplier techniques, the proposed converter can reach a high step-up gain without an extremely high turn-ON period. In addition, a very small auxiliary inductor employed in series to the input dc source makes the input current ripple theoretically decreased to zero, which simplifies the design of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter. In addition, the voltage stresses on the semiconductor devices of the proposed converter are efficiently reduced, which makes high performance MOSFETs with low voltage rated and low resistance $r_{DS}$(ON) available to reduce the cost and conduction loss. The operating principles and steady-state analyses of the proposed converter are introduced in detail. Finally, a prototype circuit rated at 400W with a 42-50V input voltage and a 400V output voltage is built and tested to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis. Experimental results show that an efficiency of 95.3% can be achieved.

  • Electric-field coupled power transfer (ECPT) systems employ a high frequency electric field as an energy medium to transfer power wirelessly. Existing ECPT systems have made great progress in terms of increasing the transfer distance. However, the topologies of these systems are complex, and the transfer characteristics are very sensitive to variations in the circuit parameters. This paper proposes an ECPT system with a double-sided LC network, which employs a parallel LC network on the primary side and a series LC network on the secondary side. With the same transfer distance and output power, the proposed system is simpler and less sensitive than existing systems. The expression of the optimal driving voltage for the coupling structure and the characteristics of the LC networks are also analyzed, including the transfer efficiency, parameter sensitivity and total harmonic distortion. Then, a design method for the system parameters is provided according to these characteristics. Simulations and experiments have been carried out to verify the system properties and the design method.

  • In this paper, a buck-flyback (fly-buck) stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system for charge balancing with a differential power processor (DPP) circuit is proposed. Conventional feed-back DPP converters draw differential feed-back power from the output of a string converter. Therefore, the power is always through the switches and diodes of the string converter. Because of the returning conduction path, there are always power losses due to the resistance of the switch and the forward voltage of the diode. Meanwhile, the proposed feed-back DPP converter draws power from the magnetically-coupled inductor in a string converter. This shortens the power path of the DPP converter, which reduces the power losses. In addition, the extra winding in the magnetically-coupled inductor works as a charge balancer for battery-stacked stand-alone PV systems. The proposed system, which uses a single magnetically-coupled inductor, can control each of the PV modules independently to track the maximum power point. Thus, it can overcome the power loss due to the power path. It can also achieve charge balancing for each of the battery modules. The proposed topology is analyzed and verified using 120W hardware experiments.

  • In this study, a novel zero voltage zero current transition (ZVZCT) bidirectional DC-DC converter is proposed by employing coupled inductors. This converter can turn the main switch on at ZVZCT and it can turn it off with zero voltage switching (ZVS) for both the boost and buck modes. These characteristics are obtained by using a simple auxiliary sub-circuit regardless of the power flow direction. In the boost mode, the auxiliary switch achieves zero current switching (ZCS) turn-on and ZVS turn off. Due to the coupling inductors, this converter can make further efficiency improvements because the resonant energy in the capacitor or inductor can be transferred to the load. The main diode operates with ZVT turn-on and ZCS turn-off in the boost mode. For the buck mode, there is a releasing circuit to conduct the currents generated by the magnetic flux leakage to the output. The auxiliary switch turns on with ZCS and it turns off with ZVT. The main diode also turns on with ZVT and turns off with ZCS. The design method and operation principles of the converter are discussed. A 500 W experimental prototype has been built and verified by experimental results.
