  • In this work, we experimentally investigated the solar absorption performance of Cu-based scalable nanostructured surfaces and compared their performance with the conventional TiNOX. We fabricated Cu-based nanostructured surfaces with a controlled chemical oxidation process applicable to a large area or complex geometry. We optimized the process parameters including the chemical compounds, dipping time and process temperature. We conducted both lab-scale and outdoor experiments to characterize the conversion efficiency of each absorber surfaces with single and double glazing setup. Lab-scale experiment was conducted with $50mm{\times}50mm$ absorber sample with 1-sun condition (1kW/m2) using a solar simulator (PEC-L01) with measuring the temperature at the absorber plate, cover glass, air gap and ambient. From the lab-scale experiment, we obtained ${\sim}91^{\circ}C$ and $94^{\circ}C$ for CuO and TiNOX surfaces after 1 hr of solar illumination at single glazing, respectively. To measure the absorber performance at actual operating condition, outdoor experiment was also conducted using $110mm{\times}110mm$ absorber sample. We measured the solar flux with thermopile detector (919P-040-50). From outdoor experiment, we observed ${\sim}123^{\circ}C$ and $131^{\circ}C$ for CuO and TiNOX with 0.6 kW/m2 insolation at double glazing, respectively. We showed that the suggested nanostructured CuO solar absorber has near-equivalent collection efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art TiNOX surfaces even with much simpler manufacturing process that does not require an expensive equipment.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision-based simultaneous localization and map-building (SLAM) algorithm. SLAM problem asks the location of mobile robot in the unknown environments. Therefore, this problem is one of the most important processes of mobile robots in the outdoor operation. To solve this problem, Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is widely used. However, this filter requires computational power (${\sim}O(N)$, N is the dimension of state vector). To reduce the computational complexity, we applied compressed extended Kalman filter (CEKF) to stereo image sequence. Moreover, because the mobile robots operate in the outdoor environments, we should estimate full d.o.f.s of mobile robot. To evaluate proposed SLAM algorithm, we performed the outdoor experiments. The experiment was performed by using new wheeled type mobile robot, Robhaz-6W. The performance results of CEKF SLAM are presented.

  • For quantitative evaluation of wooden structures, the mechanical performance of members has undergone outdoor exposure tests. A year-long monitoring was conducted using an SPF species. Test groups were divided into twelve (each month) to measure the moisture content, density and ultimate load. Starting from May when moisture content of the test group was at the lowest, simple failure modes were observed more frequently during the first half of the experiment, whereas complex failure modes took over during the second half. Starting from June when moisture content of the test group was the highest, ultimate load decreased by 30% in the second half compared to the first half. A multiple regression analysis confirmed that moisture content of the test group was the variable with most effect on ultimate load of various outdoor variables, and an estimation equation of a simple regression analysis revealed that moisture content and ultimate load formed an inversely proportionate relationship. It is thought that correlational relationships of variables other than moisture content could be applied with the increase in added data amount by longer periods of outdoor exposure tests.

  • A lot of research is being done to develop a high-efficiency heat pump to save energy, and research to reduce or eliminate the phenomenon of frost occurring in the outdoor unit coil is also being conducted at the same time. In order to conduct a study that does not cause frost on the outdoor unit of the heat pump regardless of the season, a constant temperature chamber like a general room that can be tested under the same conditions as in the natural state was built. The experiment was conducted by providing an environment similar to the natural state to the outdoor unit of the heat pump installed in the constant temperature chamber. As a result, the lower the outdoor temperature, the lower the efficiency of the heat pump. It wat confirmed that the lower the value, the longer it is.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate a top floor, indoor, thermal environment by comparison between the indoor air temperature and the rooftop surface temperature, and between the indoor air temperature and the outdoor air temperature using an experimental model. The model experiment was conducted with 4 cases,: no-rainfall, 1 em-height, 10 em-height and 20em-height of rainfall on the rooftop. According to the results of the height of stored rainfall, the average air temperature difference between the indoor and outdoor air with 1, 10 and 20 em-height of rainfall on the rooftop was $4.0^{\circ}C$, rooftop $1.2^{\circ}C$ and rooftop $1.0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The upper 10 em-height of rainfall on the rooftop acted to decrease the indoor air temperature on the top floor.

  • In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, air washers are used to remove airborne gaseous contaminants such as $NH_3,\;SO_x$ and organic gases from outdoor air introduced into clean room. Meanwhile, there is a large quantity of exhaust air from clean room. It is desirable to recover heat from exhaust air and use it to reheat outdoor air. In the present study, an experiment was conducted to investigate the heat recovery and gas removal efficiencies of a direct atomization type heat recovery air washer.

  • Outdoor lighting has become a necessary essential part of society for safety and comfortable space. However, inappropriate outdoor lighting leads to energy waste and poor landscape. Outdoor lighting is a very important social element, which enables us to conduct various activities at night in a safe, efficient and comfort way. River Thames in UK, Venice in Italy and Sydney in Australia is a good example of the coastal area. This paper aims to evaluate the light pollution of outdoor lighting in coastal area in Busan city. The Radiant Imaging ProMetric-1400 was used to measure the luminance of Gwangalli Beach, Marine City and Haeundae Beach. Compare to the CIE recommendation level the luminance of the all outdoor lighting were about 2~20 times higher. Outdoor lighting of the building facade luminance level and color should be particularly limited.

  • In recent large-scale semiconductor manufacturing cleanrooms, the energy consumption in outdoor air conditioning (OAC) systems to heat, humidify, cool and dehumidify outdoor air(OA) represents about 40~50 % of the total cleanroom power consumption required to maintain cleanroom environment. Therefore, the assessment of energy consumption in outdoor air conditioning systems is essential for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load for a cleanroom. In the present study, an experiment with an outdoor air flow rate of $1,000m^3/h$ was conducted to compare the energy consumption in steam humidification, simple air washer, exhaust air heat recovery type air washer and dry cooling coil(DCC) return water heat recovery type air washer OAC systems. Besides, a numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the annual energy consumption of the aforementioned four OAC systems. It was shown that the simple air washer, exhaust air heat recovery type air washer and DCC return water heat recovery type air washer OAC systems using water spray humidification were more energy-efficient than the steam humidification OAC system. Furthermore the DCC return water heat recovery type air washer OAC system was the most energy-efficient.

  • With the improvement of living standards, the ventilation for the mitigation of indoor or outdoor air-pollution problems has recently attracted a lot of attention. Consequently, the ventilation for the supply of outdoor fresh air into a room is treated as an important building-design factor. The ventilation is generally divided into the forced and natural types; here, the former can control the ventilation rate by using mechanical devices, but it has the disadvantages of the equipment costs, maintenance costs, and noise generation, while the latter is applied to most workshops due to the absence of noise and the low installation and maintenance costs. In this experimental study, the ventilation performance of a typical rotating-type natural ventilator, which is called a "wind turbine," was investigated with the outdoor-wind velocity and the indoor/outdoor-temperature difference. From the experiment results, it was confirmed that the temperature difference of $10^{\circ}C$ corresponds to the ventilation driving force with an outdoor-wind velocity of 1.0 m/s. Additionally, the intake-opening area of a building also exerts a great effect on the ventilation rates.

  • This study investigates the behavior of water vapor permeability of a layered system to find out a comfortable combination of a layered system for outdoor activities and examines the water vapor permeability of various types of outdoor clothing fabrics. The layered system includes the base layer such as sportswool and polyester/cotton fabrics, the middle layer such as single and double sided fleece fabrics, and the shell layer such as polyurethane-coated, PTFE-laminated and microfiber fabrics in this experiment. Results show that the layered system was applied, it was working together as a whole having some influence on each other layer, though every layer offered varying degree of water vapor permeability. Water vapor permeability of layered system exactly followed the same trend as the shell layer, which is all vapor permeable water repellent fabrics as a single layer. The rate of water vapor transfer through a layered system is mainly related to the type of vapor permeable water repellent fabrics used for the shell layer.
