This study investigates the current state of companies that manufacture and sell outdoor wear. A survey was conducted to identify what problems they had and what aspects they needed to supplement through a comparison and analysis of their block patterns. Companies that manufactured outdoor wear and those that sold them were separately surveyed to understand their current state. The manufactures included 4 companies and 14 sellers. The survey used interviews to cover the areas of target consumers, development patterns, production lines, body size, nominal size, production size, and functional materials for each item, and aspects that need improvement. The survey period was from September $3^{rd}$ to $10^{th}$ 2008. There were three block patterns for jackets, T-shirts, and pants. The investigator collected the patterns used by three outdoor clothing manu-facturers for comparison and assessment. As a result, the mean age of the target consumers set by the outdoor clothing manufacturers and sellers was 25.3-50.7 and 29.2-42.5, respectively, which shows that the outdoor clothing had a wider distribution of target consumers than the sellers. It is imperative for them to segment and differentiate the target consumers and concepts. The basic body measurements the companies used to draw the upper and lower garment patterns were the bust circumference for the upper garment patterns and the waist circumference for the lower garment patterns. The basic nominal size was 95 for the upper garment and 70 for the lower garment. Also analyzed were the block patterns according to the items to understand the pattern characteristics of each of the companies. There were a total of 35, 36, and 30 items for the jackets, T-shirts, and pants, respectively, to measure size. The items were then compared with one another in mean and standard deviation. The analysis indicate that the block patterns were not fit for women in their twenties or thirties to wear and required revisions in the length of the upper garment, the height of sleeve cap, bust circumference, hip length, and pant length.
The aim of this study is to find out comfortable combinations of layered system for outdoor activities through water vapor permeability. Layering fabrics is an effective way of controlling water transport properties in fabric systems for outdoor activities and analysis of these systems may be useful for designing comfortable clothing. Seven fabrics were chosen for the experiments: two fabrics for base layer, two for the middle layer and three for the shell layer. A total of 12 different layered systems, which are all possible combinations were established using selected fabrics. The water vapor permeability was measured using JIS L1099 under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. It was found that layered system was working together as a whole having influence on each layer, though every layer offers varying degree of water vapor permeability. Furthermore, it was also found that an optimal combination of the three layered system does exist although the combination may differ according to the ways. The shell layer is the greatest effect of water vapor permeability under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions within layered system.
Nowadays, sports and outdoor market has been popular and expanding since the implementation of the five-day workweek and change of lifestyle. Outdoor clothing considered exclusive property of the middle-aged individuals in the past. Recently there is a drift towards having outdoor looking at the age of 10-20. The purpose of this study was to analyze the features of purchasing behaviors and demographics by each groups targeting middle school and high school students. The study was conducted with questionnaires towards people who live in the city of Busan and who have experiences of buying outdoor clothing. Data analysis was conducted via SPSS 18.0 with factor analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA, cross tabulation, frequency analysis and Duncan's multiple range test. The results showed that there were five factors sought for outdoor wear benefits: Individuality/Fashion, Brand, Attractive appearance, Economic value, Comfort/Functional. Cluster analysis showed that there were four groups of outdoor wear benefits sought. Overall, the four groups were different in regard to purchasing behaviors and demographics. Based upon the results mentioned above, this study summarizes the key features of each group and can provide applicable suggestion for conducting strategic marketing activities.
This study analyzes the wearing and purchasing conditions of outdoor jackets by senior men who are over 50s, and examines product sizes of outdoor jackets in the market. A total of 134 questionnaires and sizing systems (or product size) of 10 outdoor brands were used as analytical data. The results were: a high number of senior men enjoyed hiking as an outdoor activity, with most of them following this activity1-3 times per month and as a preferred personal activity for over 5 years. Most needed outdoor wear suitable for these daily life activities. Outdoor wear satisfaction tends to decrease as people age. The major reason for the dissatisfaction with outdoor wear was price. Senior men aged 50s and 60s emphasize design and color when purchasing outdoor wear; however, men in their 70s considered price a priority. Senior men preferred outdoor brands based on a comfortable fit. An investigation on 10 outdoor brands indicated that they had not designated a specific target customer. A comparison of the product size of outdoor jackets with a similar silhouette indicated some deviations among sizes; however, the age of customers was not considered. The human body tends to shrink in stature and increase in girth as a person ages; consequently, we need to reflect body shape changes and senior's size in outdoor wear.
This research was designed to figure out the perception and attitude of university students toward urban outdoor wear and to provide the guidelines for product quality improvement using Kano model. A total of 270 responses were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 through frequency and factor analysis. Respondents' levels for outdoor activity & outdoor products possession being still low, steady growth in urban outdoor wear market is expected. A total of eight quality factors were identified through factor analysis; suitability, production quality, functionality, ease of care, fabric performance, portability, fashionability, and symbolism. Based on Kano model, quality factors of urban outdoor wear were categorized into three groups: one-dimensional; indifferent; and must-be quality factor. It was found that consumers were satisfied with urban outdoor wear only when it meets the needs for suitability for body types and ease of care, meaning that manufactures should be cautious not to lose these features. Being must-be quality factor, production quality(form stability, quality of subsidiary materials), and fabric performance such as colorfastness should be basically satisfied. The relative importance of each quality feature on satisfaction/dissatisfaction was investigated using CSC(customer satisfaction coefficient). Based on the CSC, every item was classified again. Attractive quality features with large CSC were shown in suitability factor. Must-be quality features with small CSC were mainly shown in functionality and fabric performance factors. These findings imply that manufactures of urban outdoor wear should not only maintain the production quality but also focus on suitability features to differentiate their product with previous products.
As the population of consumers of outdoor wear expands, there is increasing interest among consumers in trendy lifestyle outdoor. Accordingly, it is essential to develop designs that are drawn from outdoor wear. This can be limited to traditional mountaineering suits, and designs developed from men's outdoor zip-up T-shirts, which are highly utilized in everyday life, are very important. This study developed the design of a summer zip-up T-shirt for men with both functional and aesthetic qualities. Visual images of foreign brands and domestic outdoor-focused T-shirts from the spring/summer seasons of 2013-2019 were collected to analyze the following modeling elements: silhouettes, details, colors, materials, and prints. In addition, the design concept was derived by analyzing presentations from the global outdoor trade Fairs (2013-2019). To develop a sustainable eco-friendly outdoor summer T-shirt for men, the concept was derived according to three categories: eco-friendly, sportism-expressed active elements of sports, and an outro-concept of urban town wear as an outdoor lifestyle. Thus, a total of 12 styles of design were developed. High utilization of the outdoor wear T-shirts (which are also popular as lifestyle wear), is an important aspect of building a segmented lineup of the slow-growing outdoor wear market and supports expansion of the scope of theoretical research on outdoor wear design.
Recently, following the commercialization and market entry of smart clothes with diverse functions, smart clothes have been changing from technology-centered products to user-centered products. However, the analysis of consumer demand centered on actual commercialized products is lacking. Therefore, this study classified commercialized smart clothes by function and analyzed the demand and requirements of smart clothes according to sports/outdoor clothes consumption behaviors. As a result, consumers were classified according to their sports/outdoor clothes consumption behaviors into an outdoor leading group with high consumption propensity, an outdoor pursuit group with medium consumption propensity, and an outdoor following group with low consumption propensity. Among the commercialized smart clothes, those with a heartbeat measuring function, those with a heating function, and those with a light-emitting function were presented and demand analysis was conducted. According to the results, the outdoor leading group and the outdoor pursuit group had higher levels of awareness, preference, and purchase intentions than the outdoor following group. In addition, the outdoor leading group showed the highest level of purchase price acceptance while the outdoor following group showed the lowest level of purchase price acceptance. However, this study has a limitation that the acceptance for smart clothes were analyzed with consumers who had experience in sports outdoor clothes consumption. Therefore, in future, studies will be conducted with a wide range of consumers.
This study researched the needs of smart fashion items using energy harvesting for outdoor wearers and surveyed the application areas and design preferences for energy-harvesting systems based on outdoor activities. A total of 217 subjects were surveyed. Subjects who had at least 3 years of experience in outdoor activities were selected in order to increase the reliability of the research results. The survey investigated lifestyles based on outdoor activities, outdoor clothing and electronic equipment usage, purchase style, utilization plan, and design preference for energy-harvesting clothing and supplies. The results showed that 62.7% of the respondents had experience in outdoor activities for more than five years. 96.3% of the subjects carried electronic equipment, and 179 participants(82.5%) experienced discomfort due to battery consumption/dead batteries during outdoor activities. 78.4% were interested in smat fashion items using energy-harvesting technology, and the energy-conversion technology that was useful for outdoor activities was "kinetic energy"(74.7%). Participants showed a high preference for a detachable type(30.9%) and a city type(69.1%) that can be worn in outdoor activities as well as in general life. The preferred location of the electric power-charging device was the "Hem area of top garment"(35.9%), and the reason for this selection was that it was easy to operate and did not interfere with movement. The data from this paper can be used as a basis for product planning and product design for energy-harvesting apparel designers and supply developers for outdoor clothing.

The outdoor sportswear market in Korea has received increased attention due to the interest in health and leisure activities promoted through the well-being trend. This study examines the merchandising process for outdoor sportswear brands and focuses on textile planning in order to identity the opportunities for Korean textile companies. Data were collected through an interview method of nine outdoor leading brands (six national brands and three license brands). The interviewees were merchandisers with two to nine years of career experience in the company. The majority of interviewed brands implemented a merchandising plan twice a year. Basic goods took 80% and reorder or spot goods took 10-20% of the total quantity, which possessed a substantial possibility to substitute imported textiles for Korean ones. After the 2008 global economic crisis, outdoor brands have increased the quantity of Korean textiles up to 70% of the total amount of sales because of low price per quality, lead-time accuracy, convenience for handling, and communication. The most important factors when selecting materials were functionality, quality, design, price, and lead-time for orders. The managerial implications for Korean textile companies were also discussed.

The objective of this study was to determine factors affecting sun protective behavior and intention to buy UV protective clothing among outdoor sport persons in Korea. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to mountain climbers, bikers and in-line skaters with a convenience sampling method. Two theoretical frameworks, health belief(HB) model and diffusion theory(DT) were used for the study. Based on HB model, sun protection behaviors(SPBs) were associated with cancer perception, perceived benefits, behavioral barriers and cues to actions based on the HB model. Based on DT model, intention to buy (ITB) was determined by an individual's perceived attributes of UV protective shirt. Appearance concern variables were added to the extended HB model. The extended DT model was proposed by adding the variables in the HB model and variables of appearance concern. Multiple regression analysis was applied. Results were as follows. First, perceived benefits, behavioral barriers, cues to action, and all three appearance concern variables as well as gender and age were significant determinants of SPB for Korean outdoor consumers. Second, relative advantage, compatibility, friability, behavioral barriers and cues to action with some appearance concern variables were significant in affecting intention to buy UV protective clothes. Extended HB model and extended DT model were useful to understand SPBs of Korean outdoor consumers.
