  • In this study, a shock absorber whose orifice area changes according to the oil pressure inside the absorber is developed. The orifice widens and narrows when the oil pressure is high and low, respectively; thus, the orifice area changes according to the oil pressure, in other words, according to the extension/compression velocity. It is well known that the damping force can be expressed as $C{\cdot}v^{\alpha}$. For fluid film damping, the force is proportional to velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=1$, and for orifice damping, it is proportional to the square of velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=2$. The shock absorber proposed in this paper can exhibit different relationships between the damping force and velocity because the orifice area changes according to the induced oil pressure. The motivation of this study is to develop a method for designing a shock absorber with desired values of C and ${\alpha}$ which is not just 1 or 2. Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to verify the damping characteristics of the shock absorber. The effect of some major design parameters on damping characteristics has been also examined to relate the design parameters to the damping characteristics.

  • The spool displacement of a directional control valve can be considered as the standard signal for the measurement of its bandwidth frequency. When the spool displacement is not available, the metering-orifice system is suggested in this study as an alternative way to measure the - 3 dB amplitude-ratio bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic directional-control valve. The amplitude ratio of the metering-orifice pressure can be adjusted to equal that of the spool displacement through the controlling of the metering-orifice opening area. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metering-orifice system. The metering orifice was confirmed as adequate for the measurement of the - 3 dB amplitude-ratio bandwidth frequency.

  • In order to investigate the effectiveness of an orifice system in producing pressure drops and the effect of compressibility on the Pressure drop, computations using the mass-averaged implicit Wavier-Stokes equations were applied to the axisymmetric pipe flows with the operating pressure ratio from 1.5 to 20.0. The standard k-e turbulence model was employed to close the governing equations. Numerical calculations were carried out for some combinations of the multiple orifice configurations. The present CFD data showed that the orifice systems, which have been applied to incompressible flow regime to date, can not be used for the hint operating Pressure ratio flows. The orifice interval did not strongly affect the total pressure drop but the orifice area ratio more than 2.5 led to high pressure drops. The total pressure drop rapidly increased in the range of the operating pressure ratio from 1.5 to 4.0, but it did not depend on the operating pressure ratio over 4.0.

  • In a liquid-fueled ramjet engine, the insufficient mixing and evaporation result in the low combustion efficiency and combustion instability. Improving its spray characteristics and devising a means of mixing fuel droplets with air may compensate these disadvantages of liquid fuel ramjet engine. The jet penetrations of various fuel injectors were measured to investigate the spray characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine under high pressure air-stream conditions. The penetrations in high pressure conditions are smaller than the values calculated from Inamura's or Lee's equations, and, in the high pressure conditions, the jet penetrations are similar each other. In the dual hole injectors, the jet penetrations of rear orifice is rapidly increased due to the reduction of the drag, which is created by the jet column of front orifice. The jet penetration of rear orifice is increased because of the drag reduction created by the jet column of the front orifice. And, because of the drag reduction formed by the column of jet, the jet penetration in the rear orifice of dual hole injector is much larger than the jet penetration of single hole injector. As the distances of the orifice are increased, the jet penetrations of the rear orifice decrease.

  • In butterfly control valve, a multi-hole orifice is attached downstream of valve to stabilize flow fluctuation. The computational simulation is conducted to analyze valve flow characteristics. The results show that the velocity distribution of downstream of valve with the orifice is improved compared to non-orifice case. Test result in site is 60% reduction in vibration.

  • Effects of the orifice internal flow such as cavitation and hydraulic flip on transverse injection into subsonic crossflows have been studied. The liquid column breakup length and the liquid column trajectory were measured by changing the orifice diameter (d), the orifice length/orifice diameter (L/d), the injection pressure and the shapes (sharp and round) of orifice entrance, and were compared with previous results. It is found that cavitation bubbles, which occur inside the sharp-edged orifice, make the liquid jet very turbulent and especially in the orifices with L/d = 5 hydraulic flip appear as cavitation bubbles are emitted from the orifice. The breakup length is shorter as cavitation bubbles grows and hydraulic flip appears. However, the liquid column trajectories normalized by the effective diameter and the effective momentum ratio have a similar tendency irrespective of cavitation and hydraulic flip.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the V type rotating fuel nozzle with orifice diameters by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational system, fuel injection system and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, droplet diameters are reduced with increasing orifice diameter and the optimum injection orifice diameter is 2.6 mm. When increasing orifice diameter over than 2.6 mm, droplet diameter is not decreased with increasing orifice diameter. This is due to the irregular distribution of the liquid sheet around the inner surface of injection orifice.

  • The objective of the paper was to measure the pressure drop and to investigate the recirculation region of the conical orifices used in Kwang-yang Iron & Steel Company. The flow field with water used as a working fluid was the turbulent flow for Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^4$. The effective parameters for the pressure drop and the recirculation region were the conical orifice's inclined angle (${\theta}$) against the wall, the interval(L) between orifices, the relative angle of rotation(${\alpha}$) of the orifices, the shape of the orifice's hole(circle, rectangle, triangle) having the same area. It was found that the shape of the orifice's hole affected the pressure drop and the flow field a lot, But the other parameters did not make much differences to the pressure drop. The PISO algorithm with FLUENT code was employed.
