  • Objectives In order to investigate the effects of Sansayukbokhap-bang (SSYBHB) on the hematological and histological changes. Methods C57BL/6 mice were fed with high fat diet. C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups and fed for 15weeks. Results 1. The body weight of SSYBHB intake mice was significantly lower than high fat diet group. 2. The final increase of body weight was decreased significantly. 3. The levels of ALT, AST, total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, triglyceride, Leptin were decreased significantly. 4. The levels of creatinine were decreased but did not show significance. 5. The level of HDL-cholesterol and the expression of ${\beta}$3AR mRNA gene in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes were increased significantly. 6. Adipocytes' size was decreased significantly. 7. The expression of ${\beta}$3AR mRNA gene, Leptin mRNA gene and serotinin mRNA gene in Adipocytes tissue was decreased significantly. Conclusion Based on these results, it is proved that SSYBHB is effective on the therapy of obesity by referring to obese-gene and obese inhibitory. So, it is espected that the clinical application of SSYBHB can help the treatment of obesity.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of modified fasting therapy using fermented herbal medicine on the changes of body compositions. Methods : This study was carried out on 11 patients who carried out modified fasting therapy using fermented herbal medicine. They went through reducing food intakes period(7 days), fasting period(10~14 days) and refeeding period(10~14 days). Body compositions(weight, BMI(body mass index), skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, percent body fat, basal metabolic rate, waist-hip ratio, visceral fat area) were measured at each state. And then the data was analyzed. Results : 1. The weight and BMI decreased during the reducing food intakes period and the fasting period, and increased during the refeeding period. But the weight and BMI decreased during the fasting therapy period, as a whole. 2. The skeletal muscle mass decreased during the fasting period and increased during the refeeding period. As the final outcome, for the whole fasting therapy period, decrease of skeletal muscle mass didn't show significance. The body fat mass and percent body fat decreased during the reducing food intakes period, the fasting period and the refeeding period. 3. The basal metabolic rate decreased during the fasting period and increased during the refeeding period. As the final outcome, for the whole fasting therapy period, decrease of basal metabolic rate didn't show significance. 4. The waist-hip ratio decreased during the fasting period and the refeeding period. The visceral fat area decreased during the fasting period and refeeding period. Conclusions : Results from this investigation showed that modified fasting therapy using fermented herbal medicine have positive effects on changes of body compositions. This results are expected to compensate the defects of existing fasting therapy.

  • This research was planned and executed to evaluate how the nutritional composition and antioxidants contents and antioxidative activity of a composite with Eleutherococcus senticosus and several oriental medicinal herbs . Also, can effect health conditions of people who are suffering from diet-related disease like obesity and hyperlipidemia by taking healthy foods with a composite with Eleutherococcus senticosus and several oriental medicinal herbs in a form of nutritional supplement with our daily meals. With this observation, we found out that a composite with Eleutherococcus senticosus and several oriental medicinal herbs has dietary fiber, Zn, Cu, Fe and water soluble antioxidants and effect on antioxidative activity. We concluded that we could apply the components in a form of various foods. The information we received from this conclusion will be a basic information on how we can apply oriental medicinal resources into other foods and in the field of functional food research, which already draes sizable attention world-wide.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to the effect of very low calorie diet with Chegameuiintang to treat obese patients . Methods: We have evaluated 54 obese patients during very low calorie diet with Chegameuiintang weight-reducing regime by determining the body composition before and 1 month, 2 months after treatment by Bioelectrical impedence analysis . Results: In the change of body composition by the treatment, mean weight reduction was 11.59kg(15.57% of initial weight), mean weight reduction after 1month was 7.68kg( 10.31% of initial weight), mean weight reduction after 2 months was 3.91 kg(5.86% of weight after 1 month). Mean reduction in total fat mass was 8.03kg(2914% of the initial fat mass) which constitutes 69.28%. Mean reduction in lean body mass was 3.56kg(7.59%) Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that the compound therapy of very low calorie diet and Chegameuiintang (Tiganyiyiren-tang) is the good way of weight reduction, which reduces total fat mass and preserves lean body mass.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Daecheongryoung-tang (DCR) therapy on body weight, serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, total lipid, phospholipid level and complete blood cell count of obese rats. Methods: 34 rats are divided into 4 groups, the rats in the normal group are 7 and the rats in the other group are 9 per group; Normal group (general fat diet and no medication), Control group (high-fat diet and no medication), DCR_L group (high-fat diet and DCR 250 mg medication) and DCR_H group (high-fat diet and DCR 500 mg medication). DCR is administrated for 6 weeks. Results: There is significant statistical difference between Control group and DCR-H group for the body weight, the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid level. Also, there is significant statistical difference among Control group, DCR_L group and DCR_H group for body weight, triglyceride, free fatty acid and phospholipid level. Conclusions: These results suggest that medication of DCR_L and DCR_H is effective for the treatment of obesity.

  • aksun(藥饍), or 'Traditional oriental medicine nutrition therapy', is expected to be an effective nutritional intervention for the patients suffering from chronic diseases. However, there are no systemized protocol that utilize Yaksun as an effective nutrition therapy for Asian patients even though they are accustomed to traditional oriental diet. We investigated the possibility of using Yaksun for developing an effective Medical Nutrition Therapy for Asian patients and proposed factors that have to be considered. Articles published between 1995-2012 about MNT (Medical Nutrition Therapy) and Yaksun were reviewed. Male and female patients of two Korean Medicine Hospitals (n=93) and one Korean Medicine Clinic (n=20) answered a questionnaire asking about their thoughts on the effectiveness of nutritional intervention for their disease management and about their expectations toward Medical Nutrition Therapy on Korean Medicine. 92.9% of the patients have perceived that nutritional intervention is important in disease management. 79.6% of the patients have positively responded that they are willing to use the Medical Nutrition Therapy on Korean Medicine as a clinical nutrition therapy if developed. Female patients, aged in their forties and fifties, educated equivalent to high school graduates and more, and who visited Korean medicine clinic were most interested in the Medical Nutritional Therapy on Korean Medicine. The factors considered in developing the protocol are 1. effectiveness 2. safety 3. expense, in order of importance. Nutritional intervention protocol using Yacksun is necessary for the patients. Medical Nutrition Therapy on Korean Medicine is in need of development. Accumulated case-control studies, cost effectiveness studies, and studies about programming and systemizing the protocol are needed.
