  • Silicom oxide films with good water repellency were prepared by rf plasma-enhanced CVD (rf-PECVD) using four kinds of organosilicon compound, which had different number of methyl ($CH_3$) groups, and oxygen as gas sources. The differences in the deposition rates, film composition and film properties were studied in detail. Water repellency depended on the number of $CH_3$ groups in the organosilicon compounds and the partial pressure of oxygen in the plasma. The highest contact angle for water drops, about 95 degrees, was obtained when trimethy lmethoxy silane (TMMOS) was used. The contact angle decreased with the amount of oxygen gas introduced into the plasma. The dissociation of $CH_3$ groups by adding oxygen was comfirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical properties were estimated by double-beam spectroscopy and ellipsometry. The transmittance of the glass plate coated by the film prepared with tetramethoxy silane (TMOS) was about 90% and the refractive index of film was 1.44. This value was smaller than the refractive index of a glass plate(soda lime glass, refractive index is 1.515) and this film played a role of anti-refractive coating.

  • The synthesis of the intramolecular donor - stabilized silyl and germyl complexes of the type ($Cab^c.p) MMe_2X$ (2a:M=Si, X=Cl;2b;M= Ge, X=Cl;2e;M=Si,X=H) was achieved by the reaction of $LiCab^c,p$ (1) with $Me_2SiClX$ and $Me_2GeCl_2$ respectively. The intramolecular M←P interacion in 2a-2c is provided by $^1H$, $13^C.$, $31^P$ and $29^Si$ NMR spectroscopy. The salt elimination reactions of dichlorotetramethyldisilane and -digermane with 1 afforded the $bis(\sigma-carboranylphosphino)disilane$ and disgermane [$(Cab^C.P)MMe_2]_2(4a;M$ = Si;4b: M=Ge). The oxidative addition reaction of 4a-4b with $pd_2(dba)_3CHCl_3afforded$ the bis(silyl)-and bis(germyl)-palladium complexes. The chloro-bridged dipalladium complexes were obtained by the reaction of 2a-2b with $pd_2(dba)_3CHCl_3$ The crystal structures of 5a and 7b were determined by X-ray structural studies.

  • Optical images based on the porous silicon exhibiting photoluminescence have been prepared from an electrochemical etching of n-type silicon wafer (boron-doped,<100> orientation, resistivity $1{\sim}10{\Omega}-cm$) by using a beam projector. The images remained in the substrate displayed an optical images correlating to the optical pattern and could be useful for optical data storage. This provides the ability to fabricate complex optical encoding in the surface of silicon.

  • Organosilicon polymers have long paid attention as functional polymers [1,2]. Among others, poly- (1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) [PTMSP] is a polymer, which forms a gas separating membrane with extraordinary high gas permeability. In particular, composite membranes that constituted two different matrices (inorganic and organic) have been recently developed in order to improve the permeation characteristics.(omitted)

  • In this study, an amorphous SiC block was manufactured using polycarbosilane (PCS), an organosilicon polymer. The dense SiC blocks were easily fabricated in various shapes via pyrolysis at 1100℃, 1200℃, 1300℃, 1400℃ after manufacturing a PCS molded body using cured PCS powder. Physical and chemical properties were analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and universal testing machine (UTM). The prepared SiC block was decomposed into SiO and CO gas as the temperature increased, and β-SiC crystal grains were grown in an amorphous structure. In addition, the density and flexural strength were the highest at 1.9038 g/㎤ and 6.189 MPa of SiC prepared at 1100℃. The manufactured amorphous silicon carbide block is expected to be applicable to other fields, such as the previously reported microwave assisted heating element.

  • The $(LM)Ni_{4.5}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.2}Al_{0.2}$ hydrogen storage alloy powders were conducted 25wt% electroless copper plating in an acidic bath. For the preparation of a hydride electrodes, the copper coated alloy powder was mixed with Si-sealant(organosilicon) and compacted with $6t/cm^2$ at room temperature. The electrode characteristics were examined through electrochemical measurements in a half cell. As a sealant contents increased, the initial discharge capacity of si-sealant bounded electrode was lower and the activation rate in high current density was slower. For extended cycles, however, the electrodes with the Si-sealant were superior in a high rate discharge and useful range of temperature over the sealant-free electrode. In addition, the cycle life increased with increasing the amount of Si-sealant added. It can be suggested from the results that the Si-sealant as a binder could be applied to the preparation of the metal hydride electrode.

  • A simple and rapid method is described for detecting nitroaromatic explosives in air or seawater with the use of photoluminescent organosilicon compounds. The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and fluorescence quenching efficiency of silafluorenes are reported. Silafluorenes were synthesized from the reduction of dilithiobiphenyl with dichlorosilanes. Two silafluorenes were used for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds. Detection of nitroaromatic molecules, such as 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and picric acid (PA), has been explored. A linear Stern-Volmer relationship was observed for the first three analytes. Fluorescence spectra of silafluorenes obtained in either toluene solutions or thin films displayed no shift in the maximum of the emission wavelength. The photoluminescence quenching occurs by a static mechanism.

  • In this paper, the ultra water-repellent thin films were prepared by RF PECVD. On the basis of surface morphology, chemical bonding states and plasma diagnostics, a formation model of clusters for the ultra water-repellent films was discussed from considerations of formation process and laser scattering results. Moreover, using laser scattering method, the relative change of quantity of nano-clusters or size of agglomerates could be confirmed. From the results, the films were deposited with nano-clusters and those of agglomerates, which formed in organosilicon plasma, and formation of agglomerates were depended on the deposition time.

  • Silicon oxide films with high hardness and water repellency were prepared by microwave plasma-enhanced CVD using four kind of organosilicon compound-fluoro-alkyl silane mixtures as source gases. An argon gas was used as a carrier gas for fluoro-alkyl silane. The substrate temperatures during deposition were controlled by resistant heating at a constant value between 50 and $300^{\circ}C$. The hardness of the films increased, but the deposition rate and the contact angle for a water drop decreased with increasing substrate temperature. The number of methoxy groups also affected the water repellency and hardness. The deposited films became more inorganic with increasing substrate temperature because of the thermal dissociation of reactants.
