This paper is motivated by social influence theory implying the multilevel nature of knowledge management (KM) in an organization. Organizational knowledge is generated and distributed by individuals from different groups across organizational boundaries. Its transfers are supported by IS/IT practice, i.e., the individual and collective use of the technology available in the organization. I propose a multilevel perspective to explain how IS/IT practice supports multilevel KM capabilities to manage organizational knowledge successfully and how the effectiveness of multilevel KM capabilities expands into the improvement of multilevel task-related organizational performance. The multilevel KM theory extends the knowledge-based view of the firm by describing the dynamic process through which strategic values of knowledge are generated by IS/IT practice across the organizational levels. This paper also discusses multilevel insights on the strategic value of organizational learning based on the social context of organizations.
Franchising is one of the fastest growing types of business. It is already popular and well-known in the U.S., and has been growing in many other countries including Korea. Furthermore, many Korean franchising companies have expanded their business overseas actively. According to the data by the Ministry of Industry and Resource, 82 companies out of a sample of 500 franchising companies are already operating in many foreign countries and 48% of them have started their foreign business since 2006. This clearly indicates the fast growing current trend of foreign operation by Korean franchising companies. In spite of the fast growing trend of foreign expansion in the industry, academic research on internationalization of franchising companies is extremely difficult to find. Accordingly, academic research on the issue is necessary and urgent in Korea. Among the various research questions on internationalization of franchising business, this study intends to investigate the difference in organizational factors between the franchising companies doing foreign operation and those doing business only domestically. More specifically, this research has the following purposes. First, considering the lack of theoretical basis of previous studies, resource-based theory and agency theory are employed as the theoretical bases. Second, this study explains the difference in internationalization based on organizational factors such as company size, history and growth rate. Third, the five hypotheses regarding the difference in organizational factors are presented and tested empirically, which is the first attempt in the area of this topic. Finally, the study attempts to clarify the conflicting implications among theories regarding some organizational factos such as growth rate. As the theoretical background, resource-based theory and agency theory are discussed. According to resource-based theory, a firm can grow continuously when it has competence and resource, and also the ability to develop them. The competence and resource can include capital, human resource, management skill, market information, ability to manage risk, etc. Meanwhile, agency theory views the relationship between franchisor and franchisee as an agency relationship. In agency theory, bonding capability and monitoring capability are the two key factors which promote internationalization of franchising companies. Based on the two theories, a conceptual model is designed. The model consists of two groups of variables. One is organizational factors including size, history, growth rate, price bonding and geographic dispersion. The other is whether a franchising company is operating overseas or not. We developed the following five research hypotheses basically describing the relationship between organizational factors and internationalization of franchising companies. H1: The size of franchising companies operating overseas is larger than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H2: The history of franchising companies operating overseas is longer than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H3: The growth rate of franchising companies operating overseas is higher than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H4: The price bonding of franchising companies operating overseas is higher than that of franchising companies operating domestically. H5: The geographic dispersion of franchising companies operating overseas is wider than that of franchising companies operating domestically. Data for the analyses are obtained from 2005 Korea Franchise Survey data co-generated by Ministry of Industry and Resource, GS1 Korea, and Korea Franchise Association. Out of 2,804 population companies, 2,489 companies are excluded for various reasons and 315 companies are selected as the final sample. Prior to hypotheses tests, validity and reliability of the measures of size, history, growth rate and price bonding are examined for further analyses. Geographic dispersion is not validated since it is measured using nominal data. A series of independent sample T-tests is used to find out whether there exists any significant difference between the companies internationalized and those operating only domestically for each organizational factor. Among the five factors, size and geographic dispersion show significant difference, growth rate and price bonding do not reveal any difference and, finally, history factor shows conflicting results in the difference depending on how to measure it.

In conclusion, the results show that the size and history, which are the key variables in resource-based theory, have a significant relationship with internationalization and that geographic area, which belongs to agency theory, also has a strong relationship with internationalization. The results support the findings of extant research and, therefore, prove the usefulness of resource-based theory and agency theory in explaining internationalization of franchising companies. However, growth rate and price-bonding do not show a clear difference between the two types of companies. Accordingly, these two factors need further attention in the future research. Although this study shows meaningful findings theoretically and practically, it has several limitations. First, only organizational factors are considered even if there are various environmental factors influencing franchising firm's internationalization. Second, only being internationalized or not is considered. That is, modes of entry and the size of foreign operations are not included in the study. Third, internationalization strategy is often determined based on the desire for business expansion and higher profitability and egoistical reasons of the CEOs. However, this type of factors belonging to behavioral science is not discussed in the study. Finally, organizational ecology perspective is usefully applicable in explaining the survival and performance of internationally operating companies. Accordingly, research propositions based on this perspective need to be developed and tested.
This review aims to synthesize social network theories by drawing on the importance of social network perspectives in understanding knowledge management with technology in organizations. I provide an overview of prior social network research with the following core ideas: the primacy of relations between organizational actors, the utility of actors' embeddedness in social fields, the social utility of network connections, and the structural patterning of social life. On top of that, I summarize critical social perspectives (the social capital theory, the structural hole theory, the embeddedness perspective, the social exchange theory, the organizational learning theory, and the innovation diffusion theory) to suggest potential research questions for future studies in social network research in the knowledge management discipline.
The current study investigates the relationship of antecedents of flow, organizational commitment, knowledge sharing, information technology usage for knowledge sharing, and job satisfaction of organizational employees. This study analyze the effects of psychological states of employees both on affective states of them and on knowledge sharing by applying the internet-based flow theory to knowledge sharing. The antecedents of flow are found to have positive effects on organizational commitment. In addition, it is found that organizational commitment has a positive effect on knowledge sharing, information technology usage for knowledge sharing, and job satisfaction. While it is found that knowledge sharing has a positive effect on job satisfaction, it is found that information technology usage for knowledge sharing does not have an effect on job satisfaction, but have a positive effect on knowledge sharing. The result of this study would not only provide significant insights to knowledge management researchers and practitioners but also contribute to applying the flow theory to knowledge sharing.
Most organization are using E-mail(electronic mail) currently, but we seldom see the organizational success from the E-mail utilization strategically. There are many research which are focusing on the selection and usage of E-mail as a electronic communication media based on Information Richness Theory and Critical Social Theory. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects by using E-mail through providing the model of perceived impacts. This model considers the moderate factors such as top management supports, organizational usage, and organizational pressure based on CST. Also it provides the guideline how to use E-mail strategically.
Electronic Data Interchange(EDI) has the potential to improve business operations by expediting the exchange of business documents. It will also provide substantive operational and strategic benefits to the trading firms. However, the successful implementation of EDI systems requires the mutual trust and cooperation between the trading firms. The extent of EDI diffusion and performance depends on inter-organizational, intra-organizational, as well as innovation factors. Researches based on the sociopolitical process framework in the use of IT, organizational theory, resource dependence theory, and innovation diffusion theory have identified 3 inter-organizational variables(transaction climate, dependence, external IS expert support) and 4 intra-organizational variables(strategic IS planning, infrastructure, top management support, education/training,), and 3 innovation variables(compatibility, relative advantage, cost) that affect EDI diffusion. In this study, a multi-dimensional measure on EDI diffusion has been developed to capture the external and internal integration. Then, the influence of these 10 variables on the extent to which the EDI adopting firms pursue diffusion has been examined. Whether more diffusion leads to superior performance has also been studied. International trade managers from 107 firms in the trade industry participated in a field survey. The results based on a structural equation model(SEM), developed using AMOS, provide quite a strong support for the hypothesized relations. Both education/training and IT infrastructure influenced external and internal diffusion of EDI systems. Internal diffusion of EDI enables the adopting firms to improve operational and strategic performance, whereas external diffusion contributes only to operational performance.

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine organizational change for a technological application of the fourth industrial revolution. The theoretical background of this study utilized organizational change management, the fourth industrial revolution, technological innovation, and voluntary acceptance. This research method used structural equations, cluster analysis, and analysis of variance. According to the results of the study, the organizational implement system, organizational leadership, and organizational operating system provided a positive effect on the voluntary technology acceptance of organization members. The voluntary technology acceptance provided a positive effect on the effectiveness of individual task innovation. However, organizational institutionalization among the independent variables did not affect voluntary acceptance. All independent variables except the organizational institutionalization had a partial mediating effect in the mediating effect verification. Meanwhile, The three groups by the cluster analysis were classified as new technology apathy, preference, and anxiety groups, and differences appeared among groups in the importance of organizational change variables. The organizational implement system in the technology apathy group and the organizational operating system in the technology anxiety group have a positive effect on voluntary technology acceptance. The technology preference group shows that a positive effect on organizational leadership and a negative effect on organizational institutionalization for voluntary technology acceptance. This study analyzed the technology application of the fourth industrial revolution in the organization based on the theory of organizational change. There has been reexamined the organizational change theory based on the new technology acceptance by the change of external environment in the fourth industrial revolution and the importance of technology innovation. As a practical implication, firms that are interested in a new technology of the fourth industrial revolution should prioritize preparing an implementation system when designing organizational changes.
This study deals how employees' perceptions of being supported by their organizations and supervisors may lead to organizational commitment and this commitment affects turnover intention and organizational citizenship behavior in the context of Thai industrial firms. The sample consists of Thai employees working in manufacturing firms which Koreans operate in Thailand. In line with social exchange theory, this study indicated that employees who felt that their organizations and supervisors valued their contribution and cared about their well-being would be more likely to have lower level of turnover intention and higher level of organizational citizenship behavior. Moreover, it was found affective and normative commitment partially mediated the effect of perceived organizational and supervisor support on organizational citizenship behavior. This study enhances our understanding about the roles of organizational commitment in the Thai workplace, and provides some practical implications how to manage Thai employees.
According to the structural contingency theories, organizational structures are determined by such a contingency variables as organizational environment, technology, size, power and strategy. Therefore, many scholor believed that organizational effectiveness will be maximized in the condition of the fit between organizational structure and its contingency variables. But contingency theories have limitations in explaining of the manager's discretion by way of environmental determinism. In 1972, Child introduced strategic choice theory, and this perspective spurred significant, systematic studies of the influence of the managerial voluntary will on the organizational performance. Especially, the question of whether tap managers have an impact on business performance has been addressed by the strategic leadership theory that demonstrates strong associations between the characteristics of top managers, strategic orientation. Therefore, this study has investigated a theoretical literature and an empirical survey that explains the impact of top manger characteristics and organizational characteristics about strategic orientation. In order tn do that, this study develops a research model on the subjects, designed manager's characteristics, strategic typology. Managerial characteristics could be operationalized in terms of demographic measures. In this study, strategic orientation was classified using the Miles & Snow typology. This research model provides hypotheses. Hypotheses H1: The demographic characteristics of the tap manager will differ according to the types of strategic types. H2: The organizational characteristics of the firm will differ according to the types of strategic types. To test these hypotheses, this study conducted questionaire surveys on 108 firms in the Korea national wide. This study has utilized ANOVA, Chi-square analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis for testing the hypotheses. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, this study builds on the central tenent of cotingency theory in provide a comprehensive explanation of the process by which top manager's influence. Second, Manager's characteristics(demographics) are different from each other according to 4 strategic types(Prospector, Defender, Analyzer, Reactor). Third, Organizational characteristics are different from each other according to 4 strategic types. In conclusion, the major contributions of this study are to examine the development of a more comprehensive theoretical framework in the strategic leadership theory and to analyze their contingent relationships among managerial characteristics, organizational characteristics and strategic types in the context of Korea's industry.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the diffusion period and productivity of smartwork in an organization. Firms are increasingly interested in smartwork for non contact work and working from home because of the corona 19. The smartwork is a new technology that changes face-to-face work in an organization. It helps the work of individuals and organizations regardless of time and place. The theoretical background describes the complexity, system thinking, diffusion theory, smart work, organizational resistance, and productivity. This study analyzes the diffusion period and productivity of smart work through business simulation techniques. A simulation study progresses four stages. There are problem definition, hypothesis establishment and causal loop diagram, model construction and verification, and policy evaluation. The simulation models contain an individual's resistance variables organizational investment and leadership variables related to the operation of smartwork. The organizational investment variables include organizational culture, legal system, implement systems and technology investment. The individual resistance variables include cognitive, attitude, structure and technological resistance. The leadership includes leadership interest variables and performance linkage variables. The simulation executed the changes of a people number adopting smart work and the organizational productivity monthly. As a result of the simulation, many organization members have accepted the smart work innovation after 20 months. The organizational productivity through smart work showed very high value after 16 months. In scenario analysis, the individuals' awareness and attitude resistance showed very important variables to productivity and a personal change of smart work adoption. Meanwhile, The organizational investment showed that the high driving-force increased not productivity and the low driving-force showed decreased low productivity. Also, leadership variables showed a powerful driver for changing smart work productivity. The implication of the study has suggested extending complexity, diffusion theory and organization resistance theory based on simulation methods.
