Molecular electronics has been the subject of intese research for many years because of the fundamental interest in molecular charge transport and potential applications, such as (bio)nanosensors and molecular memory devices. Molecular electronics requires a method for making reliable eletrical contacts to singlemolecules. To date, several approaches have been reported: scanning-probe microscopy, mechanical break junctions, nano patterning, and direct deposition of electrode on a self-assembled monolayers. However, most methods are laborious and difficult for large-scale application and more importantly, cannot control the number of moleucles in the junction. Recently, DNA has been used as a template for metallic nanostructures (e.g., Ag, Pd, and Au nanowires) through DNA metallization process. Furthermore, oligodeoxynucleotides have been tethered to organic molecules by using conventional organic reactions. Collectively, these techniques should provide an efficient route toward reliable and reproducible molecular electronic devices with large-scale fabrication. Therefore, I will present a paradigm for the fabrication of moleuclar electronic devices by using micrometer-sized DNA-singe organic molecule and DNA triblock structures.

We demonstrated that self-separation FS-GaN (freestanding-GaN) was grown on MELO (maskless epitaxially lateral overgrowth) GaN template by horizontal HVPE (hydride vapor phase epitaxy). Before thick GaN grwoth, MELO GaN template was grown on patterned GaN template by MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition). The laterally overgrown GaN would consist of a continuous well coalesced layer. The mixed TDD (threading dislocation density) of seed and wing region were $8{\times}10^8cm^{-2}$ and $7{\times}10^7cm^{-2}$, respectively. After thick GaN grown by HVPE, the self-separation between thick GaN and sapphire substrate was generated at seed region. The regions of self-separation for FS-GaN and sapphire were observed by FE-SEM. Moreover, Raman results indicated that the compressive strain of seed and wing regions at FS-GaN substrate were slightly released compared to that of thick GaN grown on conventional GaN template. The optical properties of the FS-GaN substrate were examined by using PL (photoluminescence). The PL exhibited that donor bound exciton and donor acceptor pair were observed at low temperature. The effects on optical and structural properties of FS-GaN substrate have been discussed in detail.
Effect on hydrothermal treatment of lamellar vanadium oxides was investigated and the formation of hexagonal and cubic mesophase was found. This lamellar materials were prepared by mixing of cetyltrimethylammonium-bromide and pH-controlled sodium metavanadate solution. Thermal method and UV/O₃treatment were applied to extract organic template. The structure of resulting product was studied by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Organosilyl-modified and star-shaped poly (${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (m-PCL) was prepared, and added to polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSSQ), to make composites. The end groups of m-PCL are chemically similar to PMSSQ, and m-PCL mixed well with PMSSQ in the composite. Porous PMSSQ film was made by further calcination of the composite film at elevated temperature. m-PCL-templated PMSSQ and the as-prepared porous PMSSQ were structurally, optically, and thermally characterized in thin films. The chemical binding of m-PCL and PMSSQ effectively suppressed the phase separation of PMSSQ and m-PCL during the curing process. After calcination at elevated temperature, there remained many pores in the PMSSQ matrix. The refractive indices of the resulting porous PMSSQ thin films decreased with increase of the film porosities, depending on the initial m-PCL loadings.
We studied the optoelectronic properties of hybrid solar cells formed by mixing cadmium sulfide [CdS] nanorods with a conjugated polymer, poly-2-methoxy, 5-[2'-ethy[hexyloxy]-1,4-p-phenylenevinylene[MEH-PPV]. CdS nanorods were grown vertically on Ti substrates by electrochemical deposition through a porous alumina template. Absorption spectrum of the composite layer was the same as the superposition of the absorption spectrum of each individual layer. The photoluminescence signal from MEH-PPV film was reduced as a result of the mixing. The energy conversion efficiency of MEH-PPV improved from $0.0012\%$ to about $0.60\%$ when combined with the vertically aligned CdS nanorods.

Deposition condition of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) films on moving IBAD templates (CeO$_2$/IBAD-YSZ/SS) was studied in a hot-wall type metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process using single liquid source. The reel velocity was 40 cm/hr and the source mole ratios of Y(tmhd)$_3$:Ba(tmhd)$_2$:Cu(tmhd)$_2$ were 1:2.3:3.1 and 1:2.1:2,9, Two different types of IBAD templates with thin CeO$_2$ and thick CeO$_2$ layers were used, The YBCO films were successfully deposited at the deposition temperatures of 780~89$0^{\circ}C$ ; the a-axis growth was observed together with the c-axis growth up to 83$0^{\circ}C$. while the c-axis growth became dominant above 83$0^{\circ}C$. The top surface of the c-axis film was fairly dense and included a small amount of the a-axis growth, although the peaks of the a-axis grains were not observed in XRD pattern, The YBCO film deposited on IBAD template with thin CeO$_2$ layer showed low critical current of 2.5 A/cm-width. while the YBCO film deposited on IBAD template with thick CeO$_2$ layer showed higher critical current of 50 A/cm-width. This result indicates that thick CeO$_2$ layer is thermally more stable than thin CeO$_2$ layer at the high deposition temperature of the MOCVD process.s.

In an original effort, this lab attempted to employ polystyrene nanoparticles as a template for the synthesis of ordered and highly porous macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films, utilizing their high combustion temperature and narrow size distribution. However, polystyrene nanoparticle thin films were not obtained due to the low interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. However, polystyrene-polyacrylic acid (PS-AA) colloidal particles of a core-shell structure were synthesized by a one-pot miniemulsion polymerization approach, with hydrophilic polyacrylic acid tails on the particle surface that improved interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. The PS-AA thin films were spin-coated in the thickness ranges from monolayer to approximately $1.0\;{\mu}m$. Using the PS-AA thin films as sacrificial templates, macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films were successfully synthesized by vapor deposition or conventional solution sol-gel infiltration methods. Inspection with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that the macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films consist of interconnected air balls (~100 nm). Typical macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films showed ultralow refractive indices ranging from 1.098 to 1.138 at 633 nm, according to the infiltration conditions, which were confirmed by spectroscopy ellipsometry (SE) measurements. This research shows how the synthetic control of the macromolecule such as hydrophilic polystyrene nanopaticles and silicate sol precursors innovates the optical properties and processabilities for actual applications.

In this study, the formation of $AlPO_4$-type porous materials from alum sludge was investigated. The materials were synthesized by the reaction of aluminum hydroxide and phosphoric acid with an organic template. Cationic surfactant, natural humic acid, and amino acids were used for the organic template. The residual organic templates were removed by calcination at $600^{\circ}C$ in the air. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed the charicteristic patterns of the $AlPO_4$-type porous materials. The morphology of the material was examined using a scanning electron microscopy. The coordination environment of $Al^{3+}$ ion was investigated by $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR technique. Both tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated$Al^{3+}$ ions were found in the as-synthesized samples while all $Al^{3+}$ ions were tetrahedrally coordinated in the calcined products. The development of mesopore in the solid material was confirmed by the measurement of BET specific surface area. Finally, they were used for removal of toxic formaldehyde from the air and the formaldehyde molecules were adsorbed on the surface of pores. In conclusion, $AlPO_4$-type porous materials from alum sludge might be applicable in the removal of toxic volatile organic compounds from the air.
A variety of NMR techniques were applied to the micro-chemical structural characterization of polyanilines prepared via an efficient synthetic method in a self-stabilized dispersion medium in which the polymerization was conducted in a heterogeneous organic/aqueous biphasic system without any stabilizers. Here, the monomer and growing polymer chain were shown to function simultaneously as a stabilizer, imparting compatibility for the dispersion of the organic phase, and as a form of flexible template in an aqueous reaction medium. Polymerizations predicated on this concept generated polyanilines with a low defect content: solution state $^{13}C-NMR$ and solid $^{13}CDD/CP/MAS$ spectroscopy indicated that the synthesized HCPANi and its soluble derivative, HCPANi-t-BOC, evidenced distinctly different NMR spectra with fewer side peaks, as compared to conventionally prepared PANis, and the complete structural assignments of the observed NMR peaks could be determined via the combination of both 1D and 2D techniques. Ortho-linked defects in HCPANi were estimated to be as low as 7%, as shown by a comparison of the integration of the carbonyl carbon resonance peaks.
