  • Sample preparation is significantly important to the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization of nanomaterials. However, many general organic solvents can dissolve the necessary organic polymer support layer in TEM grid, which causes it difficult to obtain high-quality samples of oil-soluble nanomaterials. In this study, a new sample preparation method for oil-soluble nanomaterials has been developed by using the sublimable material as a transition layer. Experiments also show that there is no damage to TEM grids and high-quality HRTEM images can be obtained via this method. This approach paves the way to applicable HRTEM sample preparation of oil-soluble nanomaterials.

  • Extraction efficienties of volatile organic acids in tobacco leaves according to several extraction methods were investigated and contents of volatile organic acids in 16 kinds of tobacco leaf varieties were compared. Extraction efficiency according to simultaneous distillation and extraction was 5 to 10 times higher than that according to solvent extraction, steam distillation, essential oil extraction or continuous extraction and distillation. Total contents of volatile organic acids were 1.62 to 12.94mg per l00g of sample in aromatic tobacco varieties,0.12 to 2.08mg in flue-cured tobacco leaves, and trace in burleys. Among the Korean aromatic tobacco varieties, total contents of volatile organic acids in ST374-3 were the highest, 4.66mg per l00g of sample, and those in Sohyang and Hyangcho were low, 1.69mg and 1.62mg, respectively. Among flue-cured tobacco varieties, those in NC2326 were the highest, 2.08mg per 100g of sample, but those in the other varieties were not more than 0.80mg per 1 00g of sample. Total contents of volatile organic acids in acidic hydrolysis with 0.1 M tartaric acid were higher than in non-acidic condition in all kinds of tobacco varieties.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of soil and groundwater environment changed by wildfire on cesium adsorption and transport. Soil samples (A, B) used in the study were collected from Gangwon-do, where wildfires frequently occur, and the adsorption and transport of cesium in the samples were evaluated through batch and column experiments. As a result of the batch adsorption experiments with various concentrations of cesium (CW ≈ 10~105 ㎍/L), the adsorption distribution coefficient (Kd) of cesium was higher in sample A for all observed concentrations. It means that the adsorption capacity of sample A was higher to that of sample B, which was also confirmed through the parameters of adsorption isotherm models (Freundlich and Langmuir model) applied to the experimental results. The fixed bed column experiments simulated the actual soil and groundwater environment, and they showed that cesium was retarded approximately 43 and 27 times than a nonreactive tracer in sample A and B, respectively. In particular, a significant retardation occurred in the sample A. Although sample A contains little clays, total organic carbon (TOC) contents were 3 times greater than sample B. These results imply that particulate organic matter caused by wildfire might influence the adsorption and transport of cesium in the organic matter-rich soil and groundwater environment.

  • The nano-technology becomes a key technology in every field and it wasn't specialized any more. But nano-technology didn't applied every fields actively. Because It is difficult to fabricate the nanocomposites using nano-partie without aggregation of nano-size particles. So many researcher used organic solvent for dispersion in polymer nanocomposites. But organic solvent affected the electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties in the sample. We aimed this point that investigated the effect of organic solvent in the sample by evaporated temperature(60, 80, $100^{\circ}C$). In results, nano-particles affected to electrical properties of the sample due to decrease the energy gap. And at 120 Hz, impedance value of samples by varied evaporated temperature was decreased only at $60^{\circ}C$ dramatically. It's means that organic solvent role to impurities and decreased the activation energy. And these impurities contributed to the conductivity in the sample.

  • The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steels (STSs) with various coatings (organic coating and dry coating) were examined, and their applicability as bipolar plates in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) was validated. The results showed that the organic-coated samples had a significant decrease in anodic and cathodic current density compared to the uncoated sample. However, an increase in carbon black content in the organic coating or additional heat treatment at 700 ℃ resulted in a decrease in corrosion resistance. In addition, improvements in corrosion resistance achieved by adding TiO2 powder to the organic coating were found to be limited. In contrast, dry coating with TiC and CrC exhibited higher corrosion potential, significantly lower current density, and reduced contact resistance compared to the organic coatings. Notably, the TiC-coated sample showed a comparatively lower current density and more stable behavior than the CrC-coated sample. Based on a series of experimental results, a thin TiC coating without defects is proposed as a promising surface treatment strategy for STS bipolar plates in PEMFC.

  • From the principle of CHN-Corder analysis, it is obvious that seperation of chlorine and bromine in a sample is nearly impossible. In order to analyze, chlorine, bromine, and sulfur seperately in a sample which is a single organic compound or a mixture of organic drugs, combination of flask combustion method and CHN-Corder was successfully attempted.

  • In a continuation of the 1st series of these studies, a separation of the components in organic phases obtained from Szilard Chalmer reactions of aromatic chloro derivatives was attempted to clarify the conditions of isolating the main component. Though it was unable to isolate all constituents of organic phases, the main component was well isolated by means of a simple distillation or a thin layer chromatography. It was identified that the main component was a recombined product of the recoiled $^{38}$ Cl atom with the original sample. In cases of solid samples the main component amounted about 80-60% of the radio activity of the organic phase, whereas the main component from liquid samples gave less than 70% of the radio activity of the organic phase. A prolonged irradiation could increase the yield of a main component, but it was, in case of a radiation senintive compound, decreased as the irradiation is extended. The number of aide produets separated from an organic phase of a liquid sample was greater than that of a solid sample, and hence the main component of a solid sample was isolated easier. The overall fields of the labelled main products of 22 kinds of compounds were listed and a procedure of the separation of the main component by a thin layer chromatograply was proposed and evaluated. The feasibility of the present procedure for labelling purpose was also reviewed with respects to the chemical structure of a compound.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out suitable soil sample preparation and sample holding tools for NIR reflection radiation for estimating soil components. NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1,100 to 2,500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500(Bran+Luebbe Co.). Coarse(2.0mm) and fine(0.5mm) soil sample and various sample holding tools were used to obtain mean diffuse reflection of the soil for the calibration and validation of the calibration set in estimating moisture, organic matter and total nitrogen of the soils. Multiple linear regression was used to obtain the best correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectroscopy method. Correlation of NIR spectra for finely and coarsely sized soil did not show much difference. The standard errors of prediction(SE) using different types of sample holding tools for organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture were better than 0.765, 0.041 and 0.63% respectively. From the results it can be concluded that NIR spectroscopy with flow type cell could be used as a fast routine testing method in quantitative determination of organic matter, total nitrogen and soil moisture.

  • Porous mullite-corundum ceramics were prepared using organic foam impregnation method with alumina and silica as raw materials. The influence of alkaline treatment and surfactant modification on polyurethane foam were studied. Effects of sintering process and material composition on porous mullite-corundum ceramics were investigated. The results show that the hang-pulp quantity of polyurethane foam increases with alkaline treatment. After treatment with 3 wt% SDS solution, the hang-pulp quantity of polyurethane foam further improved. Open porosity of sample decreased with elevation of sintering temperature and holding time, and compressive strength of sample showed a trend opposite to the change of porosity. The open porosity of the sample was enhanced by the increase of m(Al2O3/SiO2); the compressive strength decreased with increase of m(Al2O3/SiO2). However, when m(Al2O3/SiO2) was 2.5, the compressive strength of the sample reached 6.23 MPa, and the open porosity of the sample was 80.7 %.
