This paper investigates ordering alternation phenomena in Korean using the dative construction data from Sejong Corpus of Modern Korean (Kim, 2000). The paper first shows that syntactic weight and information structure are distinct and independent factors that influence word order in Korean. Moreover, it reveals that heaviness and givenness compete each other and exert diverging effects on word order, which contrasts the converging effects of these factors shown in word orders of right-branching languages like English. The typological variation of syntactic weight effect poses interesting theoretical and empirical questions, which are discussed in relation to processing efficiency in ordering.
Community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates was investigated from Gigye stream, Pohang, Korea from May to November, 2007. As results, total of 108 species of macroinvertebrates under 49 families, 15 orders, 5 classes in 3 phyla were identified. The number of species was the most abundantly revealed in aquatic insects (class Insecta) with 86 species (82.6%) under 7 orders. The phylum Mollusca (10 species, 9.2%) and the phylum Annelida (6 species, 5.6%) were followed in order. In the class Crustacea, 6 species (5.6%) were distributed. In aquatic insects, the order Odonata was the most abundant taxon (20 species, 23.3%). Seventeen species (19.8%) of the order Ephemeroptera and 16 species (18.6%) of the Coleoptera were followed. The primary dominant species in the stream was Cloeon dipterum of Ephemeroptera. For community analysis, the values of diversity index (H'), evenness index (J'), dominance index (DI) and richness index (RI) were studied and the average values of them were 5.65, 0.84, 0.13, and 13.18, respectively.
In the past much effort has been made to utilize advanced computational fluid dynamic (CFD) programs for aeroelastic simulations and analysis. However, it is limited in the field of unsteady aeroelasticity due to enormous size of computer memory and unreasonably long CPU time. Recently, AAEMS(Aerodynamics is Aeroelasticity minus Structure) was developed for linear time-invariant, coupled fluid-structure systems. In this paper, to demonstrate further the efficiency and accuracy of the new model reduction method, we successfully examine AGARD 445.6 wing modeled by FLUENT CFD, FSIPRO3D and NASTRAN FEM(Finite Element Method) programs. Using the ROM(Reduced Order Modeling) one can predict flutter boundary as a function of the dynamic pressure.
In this research we propose the design of the Order Statistic-Adaptive Weighted Average Hybrid(OS-AWAH) filter which can suppress noise from the corrupted image sequence effectively while preserving the image structure. The proposed filter combines the desirable properties of the order static based spatial filter which can preserve the image structure while reducing noise and the adaptive weighted average based temporal filter which can adapt the filtering weights according to the amount of motion without motion estimation. Performance characteristics of the OS-AWAH filter in noisy sequences containing moving step edges are investigated throuth computer simulations and compared with the median based filters such as 3-D WM(weighted median) filter, MMF (multistage median filter), ADCWM(adaptive directional center weighted median) filter. The visual evaluations are also carried out by applyin gthe filters to the real images. The statistical analysis and experimental reslts show that the OS-AWAH filter is effective in preserving image structures while suppressing noise effectively without motion compensation preprocessing.
In a Guest-Host cell the orientational ordering of dyes doped into liquid crystals has been investigated. To evaluate the influence of the host liquid crystals on the ordering of the dyes we have measured precisely the ordering parameters of the liquid crystals by using the dichroic ratio of the absorbances for infrared light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the diector. Our experimental results show that the ordering of the dyes can be expressed as a function of not only the molecular structure of the dyes but also the order parameter of the liquid crystals. These functions are dependent on the kinds of the liquid crystals and the dyes. Particularly the combination such as anthraquinone dyes doped into cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals show a very high ordering parameter. This is considered due to a strong intermolecular interaction between the dipoles of both liquid crystals and dyes.
According to the remarkable reduction of the vehicle noise, the important of tire noise which is generated from the vehicle and the necessities of the researches for the noise reduction are emphasized. In this study, we have studied the road noise which is excited by the interaction between tire and road. In order to evaluate the road noise, we carry out the subjective test(feeling test). In order to consider the effect of the vehicle suspension for the tire/road noise, we are equipped with identical tires on the differential vehicle suspension and evaluate the road noise. In order to consider the effect of the tire structure for the tire/road noise, we evaluate the some tires with various structures. From the test results, we fine that the difference of road noise is generated by the variation of the vehicle suspension. Also, we can select the optimized tire structure which can be reduced the road noise.
The information-theoretic approach to face recognition is based on the compact coding where face images are decomposed into a small set of basis images. Most popular method for the compact coding may be the principal component analysis (PCA) which eigenface methods are based on. PCA based methods exploit only second-order statistical structure of the data, so higher- order statistical dependencies among pixels are not considered. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a signal processing technique whose goal is to express a set of random variables as linear combinations of statistically independent component variables. ICA exploits high-order statistical structure of the data that contains important information. In this paper we employ the ICA for the efficient feature extraction from face images and show that ICA outperforms the PCA in the task of face recognition. Experimental results using a simple nearest classifier and multi layer perceptron (MLP) are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.
The aim of the paper is to use optimization and advanced numerical computation of a sail fiber-reinforced composite model to increase the performance of a yacht under wind action. Designing a composite-shell system against the wind is a very complex problem, which only in the last two decades has been approached by advanced modeling, optimization and computer fluid dynamics (CFDs) based methods. A sail is a tensile structure hoisted on the rig of a yacht, inflated by wind pressure. Our objective is the multiple criteria optimization of a sail, the engine of a yacht, in order to obtain the maximum thrust force for a given load distribution. We will compute the best possible yarn thickness orientation and distribution in order to minimize the total fiber volume with some displacement constraints and in order to leave the most uniform stress distribution over the whole structure. In this paper our attention will be focused on computer simulation, modeling and optimization of a sail-shape mathematical model in different regatta and wind conditions, with the purpose of improving maneuverability and speed made good.
Magnetite is the oldest magnet material known to mankind. It is getting attention again from solid state physics researchers now a days because it is one of the most strongly correlated electron systems. Spin, charge, and orbital orders are interplaying with lattice and involved in the Verwey transition where magnetization, conductivity, and structure changes suddenly. The peculiar ordering states above and below the transition temperature mainly originate from the coexistence of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ions in the B site of the inverse spinel structure. In particular, the state of the charge and orbital order was the oldest and most intriguing problem. NMR has made significant contribution to the investigation of this question. A. Abragam stated that there is no doubt that NMR is a very powerful tool for the study of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. In this mini-review, a short history of NMR investigation of magnetite is presented, providing a support to Abragam's claim.
Purpose - This paper aims to investigate whether information asymmetry could explain capital structures in Korean corporations. According to Myers (1984), firms prefer internal funding to external financing due to the costs associated with information asymmetry. When external financing is necessary, firms prefer to issue debt rather than equity by the same reasoning. Since Shyam-Sunder and Myers (1999), numerous studies continue to debate the validity of the theory. In this paper, we show how the theory depends on assumptions and incorporated variables. We hope our investigation can provide helpful implications regarding capital structure, information asymmetry, and other firm characteristics. Specifically, our empirical results are complementary to the analysis of Son and Lee's (2015), a recent study that examines the pecking order theory prediction for Korean retail firms. Research design, data, and methodology - We test empirical models that are some variants of model used in Shyam-Sunder and Myers (1999). The financial and accounting data are provided by WISEfn for the firms listed on the KOSPI during 1990 to 2013. Bond ratings are supplied by the Korea Investor Service (KIS). We take into account the heterogeneity in debt capacity; a firm's debt capacity is measured by using the method of Lemmon and Zender (2010) based on its bond ratings. Finally, we estimate empirical models suggested by Shyam-Sunder and Myers (1999), Frank and Goyal (2003), and Lemmon and Zender (2010). Results - First, we find that Shyam-Sunder and Myers' (1999) prediction fails to explain total debt changes of Korean firms. Second, we find a non-monotonic relationship between total debt changes and financial deficits with respect to debt capacity. This contradicts the prediction of Lemmon and Zender (2010) that argues the pecking order theory survives with a monotonically increasing relationship. Third, we estimate a negative correlation coefficient between financial deficit and current debt changes. The result is the complete opposite of the prediction of Lemmon and Zender (2010). Finally, we also confirm the non-monotonic relationship between non-current debt changes and financial deficits with respect to debt capacity. Yet, the slope of coefficient is smaller than that of total debt change case. Indeed, the results are, to some extent, consistent with the prediction of pecking order theory, if we exclude the mid-debt capacity firms. Conclusions - Our empirical results complementary to the analysis of Son and Lee (2015), a recent study focusing on capital structure in Korean retail firms; their paper suggests interesting topics regarding capital structure, information asymmetry, and other firm characteristics in Korean corporations. Contrary to Son and Lee (2015), our results show that total debt changes and current debt changes are inconsistent with the prediction of Shyam-Sunder and Myers (1999). However, similar to Son and Lee (2015), non-current debt changes are consistent with the pecking order prediction, in the case of excluding the mid-level debt capacity firms. This contrast allows us to infer that industry characteristics significantly affect the validity of the pecking order prediction. Further studies are needed to analyze the economics behind this phenomenon, which is beyond the scope of our paper. In addition, the estimation bias potentially matters regarding the firm-level debt capacity calculation. We also reserve this topic for future research.
