  • Mechanical components are to be produced with accurate dimensions in order to function properly in assemblies of a machine. Once designs of mechanical components are created, designers examine the designs by adopting many known experimental methods. A primary test method includes stress and strain evaluation of structural parts. In addition, fatigue test and vibration analysis are an important test method for mechanical components. Real experiments at a laboratory are established when products are manufactured. Since design changes should be done before producing the designs in factories, rapid modifications for new designs are required in production industries. FEM simulation is a proper choice for a design evaluation with speed at a detail stage in design process. This research focuses modeling and mechanical simulation of a mechanical component in order to ensure structural safety. In this paper, a universal joint, being used in driving axels of vehicles, is studied as a target component. A design model is created and tested in some ways by using commercial software of FEM. The designed component is being twisted to transmit heavy power and thus, torsional stress should be under strengths of the component's material. The next is fatigue analysis to convince fatigue cycles to be within the endurance limit of the material. Another test is a vibration analysis for rotational components. This research draws final conclusions from these test analyses and recommends whether the designed model is under safety condition in terms of mechanical structure.

  • We study a multi-component production/inventory system in which individual components are made to meet various demand types. We assume that the demands arrive according to a Poisson process, but there is a fixed probability that a demand requests a particular kit of different components. Each component is produced by a flow line with several stations in which the processing times of each station follow a two-stage Coxian distribution. The production of each component is operated by an independent base-stock policy with blocking. We assume that the time needed to assemble final products follows a general distribution and the capacity of an assembling facility is sufficiently large. The objective of this study is to obtain key performance measures such as the distribution of the number of each orders for each final product and the mean time of fulfilling a customer order. The basic principle of the proposed approximation method is to decompose the original system into a set of subsystems, each subsystem being associated with a flow line. Each subsystem is analyzed in isolation using a Marie's method. An iterative procedure is then used to determine the unknown parameters of each subsystem. Numerical results show that the accuracy of the approximation method is acceptable.

  • A redundant structure typically consists of primary component and standby component taking over the function of the primary component when the primary component fails. In this research, we consider a redundant structure in which a standby component can take over the function of more than one primary component when primary components fail. And we assume that the system has multi-state according to the states of components while all components have two states. This system is called as the multi-state redundant system with a multi-functional standby component. This type of redundant structure is frequently adapted by the system such as an aircraft in which the weight is an important design factor. In this paper, we propose new reliability model for this multi-state redundant system with a multi-functional standby component in order for evaluating the reliability of the system. Under the assumption that all components have constant failure rate, we evaluate the reliability of the system by applying Markov analysis method. And we investigate the effect of the multi-functional standby component by comparing reliabilities of the parallel system with multi-functional standby component and a simple parallel system and a parallel system with redundant structure.

  • Many Methodologies have proposed for component retrieval. Among them, thesaurus concept has introduced for similar component retrieval. This paper classified classes by concept according to inheritance relation for efficient retrieval of component, and applied fuzzy logic to thesaurus method and constructed object-oriented thesaurus. Proposed method could express category between concepts automatically, and calculate fuzzy degree between classes by comparing matching and mismatching degree to each class and category and construct thesaurus. Component retrieval is that using classes of component, candidate components are retrieved according to priority order using fuzzy similarity. Also, we improved retrieval performance by thesaurus greatly, setting critical of most suitable through simulation.

  • In the modern design technology, a component should be designed to fit into the overall system performance. A design methodology is developed to expedite the mechan- ical design of complex mechanical systems, The relation between the system design and component design is defined by a top-down approach and the results from the system design are utilized in the component design process. As a design example, an automobile exhaust system is selected for the system design and a bellows is chosen for a component design. Design methodology based on the top-down approach consists of five steps; (1) Analysis of service load, (2) Development of a lumped parameter, (3) Completion of the system design, (4) Selection of the component topology, (5) Completion of the component design, A method using a equivalent matrix is developed in order to determine unknown external forces in linear structural analyses. The bellows is also analyzed by the finite element method using a conical frustum shell element. Various experiments are performed to verify the developed theories. The top-down desi- gn approach is demonstrated by a design case using structural and shape optimization technology. Since the method is relatively simple and easy compared to other methods, it can be applied to the general design where system and component designs are involves simultaneously.

  • Heterogeneous components have different component models, which prevents such components from sharing the functionalities of other components based on the different models. As one of methods for linking heterogeneous components, this paper suggests a proxy component to construct a bridge between heterogeneous components of OPRoS (Open Platform for Robotic Service) and RTM (Robot Technology Middleware). The proxy component consists of two types of components called Adaptor and Interceptor, via which the heterogeneous components can exchange data and services easily. The proposed method enables adaptor and interceptor components to directly invoke the services of the latter and the former, respectively, in order to exchange data and services on a real-time basis. The proxy component can be implemented for OPRoS and RT (Robot Technology) component models to connect with RT and OPRoS ones, respectively. It is shown through a simple experiment that the proposed method works well for real-time control.

  • This paper reports results on the physical properties of a powder type of $Al_2O_3:C$ commonly used as a luminescence dosimeter using the LM-OSL technique. On the analysis with the general order kinetics model, the LM-OSL signal measured appeared to be composed of three components (fast, medium, slow) showing the largest area in the medium component. The photoionization cross sections of three components were distributed between $10^{-19}{\sim}10^{-21}cm^2$. The values of the thermal assistance energy were evaluated the largest in slow component and the smallest in fast component, which indicates the electrons trapped in defects attributed to slow component should be the most sensitive to thermal vibration among three components. In illumination to blue light, the fast component showed a rapid linear decay and completely disappeared after light exposure time of about 5 s. The medium component decayed with two exponential elements but the slow component did not observed any noticeable change until light exposure time of 40 s. In a dose response study, all components exhibited a linear behaviour up to approximately 10 Gy.

  • Recently, studies of image analysis, as the preprocessing stage for medical image analysis or image retrieval, are actively carried out. This paper intends to propose a way of utilizing color components for image retrieval. For image retrieval, it is based on color components, and for analysis of color, CLCM (Color Level Co-occurrence Matrix) and statistical techniques are used. CLCM proposed in this paper is to project color components on 3D space through geometric rotate transform and then, to interpret distribution that is made from the spatial relationship. CLCM is 2D histogram that is made in color model, which is created through geometric rotate transform of a color model. In order to analyze it, a statistical technique is used. Like CLCM, GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix)[1] and Invariant Moment [2,3] use 2D distribution chart, which use basic statistical techniques in order to interpret 2D data. However, even though GLCM and Invariant Moment are optimized in each domain, it is impossible to perfectly interpret irregular data available on the spatial coordinates. That is, GLCM and Invariant Moment use only the basic statistical techniques so reliability of the extracted features is low. In order to interpret the spatial relationship and weight of data, this study has used Principal Component Analysis [4,5] that is used in multivariate statistics. In order to increase accuracy of data, it has proposed a way to project color components on 3D space, to rotate it and then, to extract features of data from all angles.

  • Component users must customize components they obtain from providers, in order to fit them to their own purposes. Normally, a component consists of black-box parts and white-box parts. Component users customize a component by modifying white-box parts of a component, and the customization faults appear through the interaction between black-box parts and white-box parts. Customization testing could be an integration testing of these two parts of a component. Also, customization testing in CBSD should select effective test data to reduce the testing cost, since CBSD aims to reduce the development cost. Therefore, this paper proposes a customization testing technique based on COM architecture through analyzing many COM components, and the technique selects effective test data. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the test data selected by the proposed technique through an empirical study. It applies the techlique to a large-scale component-based system, Chamois, and it shows that the technique enables us to test customized COM components that run in a real component-based system
